today i bought:
-my bloody valentine- loveless
-my bloody valentine- isn't anything
-rose tattoo- assault & battery
-the ramones- too tough to die
-the ramones- subterranean jungle

on ebay i just won
-joan jett- bad reputation (i used to have the vinyl and sold it assuming i could rebuy it easily on CD, which turned out to not be the case. why is this record out of print? it is so damn good. i got outbid on one last week that went for $32 and then i won this copy for $22. jeez.)

i just ordered
-johnny moped- best of (though it seems like something of a discography, because it has 25ish songs on it, and i dont *think* much more was recorded. i'm stoked as hell.)

Iced Earth - The Glorious Burden

i think it's decent. but man, in my opinion, this record fell so short of iced earth's past 5 record. the only earth album that i like less than burden is their first.

i like it. but i rarely listen to it because if i want to hear schaffer getting loose i slap on horror show or dark saga. i STRONGLY recommend both of those.

How is this? i love the first LA Guns record. the second was OK, had some good tracks on it. i havent heard anything beyond on that. i've anted to check out some of the later stuff and some of the associated solo record.

i do have the two records that Girl record. if you arent aware, Phil Lewis sang for Girl in the early 80s, and they were aspiring to be the UKs answer to the NY Dolls. Hollywood Tease was actually fist recorded by Girl. They are pretty good records.

me too. actually i got the single disc first, and then a couple of weeks later i saw the double disc. it only had one extra song on it, plus the accoustic version of the 9-11 song which i forget the title, but i still want to own everything IE recorded, so i grabbed it and sold my single disc.

there are 2 versions of a CD single/EP by iced that i still need to get. it has the ballads off of something wicked and then each version has a couple of cover songs that dont appear anywhere else. i cant remember off hand what the songs are- i know theres a deep purple cover and maybe a sabbath cover that was not on tribute.

The Complete Quartets with Sonny Clark by Grant Green.

I was amazed that I stumbled upon this at McNally Robinson's music section of all places (it usually doesn't have what I am looking for and is biased towards various compilations of questionable value to a serious music snob like me) and at such a low price ($16.99 Cdn, for two discs, which is spectacular considering the usual prices in the section). I've been looking for this since Robert Quine listed it as among the recordings that most influenced him. (Okay, that and the cover looked cool.)

Well, picked up Kanye West - Late Registration earlier...

Incredible album.. the best thing going on in hip hop right now. Everything about is fresh. I'm a huge fan of Jon Brion and his touches on the album are what make it so good. He knows just went to add a funky oboe, saxes, chill vibes, a full orchestra, etc.

Another good thing about the album is it steps away from some of the recent trends seen in most current popular hip-hop (none of that gangsta and crunk sh*t) Its good to hear something original for once.

It's pretty good, but The College Dropout had a freshness and hunger that this album lacks. How has he gone from something so original to his sophomore effort, where he rips on his competition and talks trash about doing pot?

The beats are still hot and the lyrical prowess is there, but it leaves me feeling a bit empty.

Is that really as bad as I keep hearing it is?

I feel that it gets an unfairly bad rep, although there are some parts where you wonder just what the hell Com was thinking. Mostly I think it's because stripped of Common rapping, it doesn't really sound like a hip-hop album. There are points where you could be forgiven for mistaking this for a Stereolab or a Spiritualized album or something. (Huh. Doing some research and found that Stereolab's Laetitia Sadier features on a track.)

But it has some excellent performances by Common, and there's this one track (can't remember the title) which has like keyboards ala RZA's work for the Wu-Tang, and then the hook has like a choir and stuff.

The love songs are kind of weak though, and Jimi Was a Rock Star, while sonically interesting is to me a misstep because, well, Common can't sing. He's not Mos Def. For the most part though, Common does good and it's musically fascinating listening.

Exactly, that's when they come with their own little player that prevents you from copying any track, that muffles the sound of the CD and that adds little clicks and pauses whenever you're using another program. And that's when they don't crash your system. I'm not paying for that.

if you like that song you will probably dig the whole album. it's sort of like the buzzcocks meets social distortion.

it has a really, i guess, catchy sound, and obviously a similar vocal style, as a lot of the buzzcocks stuff, but it also has a real "story of my life" feel to it.

Well it says on the back that they are distributed by EMI Music Canada and were made in Canada. So there you go. I just supported Canadian manufacturing, in addition to the increasing concentration of the music business in the hands of few conglomerates. But I do the latter most of the time when I buy CDs anyways.

I bought Epica - The score at their concert today.
It's a very different project coming from this band, it's a film score they made for an upcoming Dutch roadmovie "Joyride". Epica is a metal/gothic band, bombastic sound with mezzo-soprano female singer and male grunts, layered with some classical music and choirs, great stuff. And this film score is without the heavy stuff, without electric guitars, beautiful music, very different than their other stuff of course, but you can also hear the similarities, it's like the background of their heavy stuff is on the forefront here, that's maybe the best way to describe it....intro's made into whole tracks, I like it.

It was the first single I think. I read in an interview with him that he wants to spread messages about society and whatnot, but he can't do that if no one buys his albums. So he tried to make Certified more mainstream so that hopefully it'll sell a good deal and he'll be able to catch the ear of the people, and then start talking about the things he really feels passionate about.

Not to me, but everything I heard by Jawbreaker is good, if fairly normal 90s punk revivalism, that manages to be grittier and more compelling than the commercial stuff. I personally prefer the pop smarts of Jets To Brazil.

Crocker, you ignorant slut.

Jawbreaker is light years ahead of Jets. If anything, Blake took a step backwords.

However, my new thing is discovering power pop. Although nothing has come close to Westerberg and the Replacements ... I did enjoy a band called the Plimsouls.

I don't see it. How is replacing standard issue punk revival chug with melodic song construction a step backwards?

Sure it has, namely Westerberg's hero Alex Chilton back when he was in Big Star. I will, however, check out the Plimsouls.

Well, obviously, because I'm right and you're wrong Adam. We've been over this a zillion times ... just like we covered homosexual hobbits, and why prog rock blows!

Dude, I can only handle Big Star in small quantities. It's like really tacky 70s music.

You know who else I've been listening to recently? T-Rex, and Bowie! Go figure.

Yet somehow the Get Up Kids and Dashboard Confessional still don't sound anymore appealing. :-|

Tacky? This from the one who chided me for not having enough pop metal and cheeze-ball synth pop on my best songs of the 80s list? For shame Mr. Piechocinski! For shame!

You know who else I've been listening to recently? T-Rex, and Bowie! Go figure.

Not really, but I've been reading a book about British punk lately which reminded me of Brit punk's glam roots. I've been listening to a mish-mash of stuff lately.

Going to the World renownd Austin Record Convention in about an hour. .

I'll let y'all know if I buy anything (I usually end up w/ a few rare vinyl things and a bunch of DVD's)

EDIT:

Here's what I ended up picking up:

KISS: Alive -- British import, on Red Vinyl. No interior booklet, but I only paid $15 for it.

Curve: Chinese Burn -- ep on CD, w/ 6 remixes of the title song, plus two unreleased tracks. (paid $2)

W.A.S.P. : Special Edition Picture Disc, the songs "Animal (F..K like a Beast")" and "Show No Mercy" on vinyl shaped like a pig-head , that is scowling w/ fangs. Got a killer deal on this -- only paid the guy $10, because he threw it in w/ a bunch of other stuff I was buying (it had a $45 price tag on it).

KISS: "A World Without Heroes/Dark Light" 45. German Import (I paid $12.50 for it).

KISS: Symphony (Alive IV) I've never seen this on vinyl, and this one is still sealed! It's a limited edition of 10,000, and this is # 8345. Fantastic deal on this too. . I paid $22.50 for it (half of the $45 he had it marked).

All in all. .. a good day

I just got 7 Fugazi albums from E-Music. It was pretty much my monthly allotment of dl's, but I think it's worth it. That patches up a pretty big hole in my alt/indie rock knowledge...

I don't feel the need to buy a new album if I can make that exact same album and burn it onto a blank CD simply by pulling the songs off the individual albums I already own. *shrugs* I was just wondering if they had some new live tracks or something on it to make it alluring to the people who already have the entire catalogue.

You are both out of the HMMC.

Oh, it's two discs with the songs in reverse chronological order.

It opens with Paschendale and closes with a live Iron Maiden.
