Probably because Scott isn't doing it anymore. The art style is still vaguely manga-like but in a way that doesn't make my eyes bleed. And yet the cover is still Scott. I guess it doesn't make a difference, I think Scott's coming back next month and then dropping off for the new team, but still...

Anyway, since blood and my own fingers attempting to gouge out my eyes weren't in the way of my vision I actually read this issue of Robin. I have to say, the action was clearly presented and though I didn't like the comments made in the middle of a fight at least a good reason was given in addition to Tim trying to lighten his attitude. The new villian, Dark Rider, actually is interesting. How do you stop someone who's truly unaware that at night he trasnforms into a superpowered bounty-hunter? I mean ethically?

On the writing side I'm not happy with Tim passing the buck on the ethical question but I can understand it. Batman comes off as truly concerned about Tim and has some interesting thoughts on Tim's state of mind. The comment on how Tim was smarter than himself (and maybe even smarter than Alfred...?) was interesting, though it seemed out of place. Especially the "We'll end up working for him one day." What? Bruce Wayne is Old Money, probably richer than Bill Gates in the DCU, he'll never end up working for anyone. The comment might work for Green Arrow or Nightwing or anyone who wasn't basically an aristocrat. And the ending is just "bleh" for me. Okay, so Tim has another guardian now. And he's a cool, hip guardian who's got medical training and worked with monks. Oh no! He might notice Tim's bruises and stuff and figure out he's Robin! Why if this hadn't been done multiple times with Jack and wasn't a clishé this'd be really exciting.

Overall I'd say it's a 3/5. Good, but not worth getting unless you like Robin as a character.

And yes, that wasn't a very good review. :p

Haven't read it yet, but when I thumbed through it, the art alone made a huge difference for me. I'll reserve judgement on the ending until I see what they have up their sleeves.

I particularly liked the way Bruce talked about Tim Drake. You gotta understand Batman does not confide his feelings to the person, he will usually talk to Alfred. By saying what he said about Tim he meant the fact that in future Batman operations Tim will be the one calling the shots. Out of all the Batman characters Tim does have the strongest will and best mind he just has to mature a little bit more. He is only 16. By the time his twenties comes around he will more directly involved in making plans.

Thank God! I have never ever stopped collecting a series due to artistic complaint in all my 12 years of collecting, but I had said last month I would with Robin. Now, I'm holding that thought as he's getting the artist from Nightwing Year One in June. This issue was good too.

After Wieringo, Pete Wood's the best artist to ever work on Robin. Daimon Scott's stuff was total ass. I can't believe I ever liked him. And I met him in Philly last year, and he was a total jerk.

The art was greatly improved this issue. I also liked Bruce's opinion of Tim, saying he was more intelligent than either Bruce or Dick.

Still, I can't wait for Scott McDaniel to take over art duties.

Actually, to me that sounded less like what Bruce would say/think and more like Willingham pleading "I can't write Robin worth ****, but at least I can do gratuituous, implausible fanservice, so please, don't go away".

Bruce bowing to little Tim's intellectual superiority is just silly.

Heh I agree with that in part but it was still nice to see a Batman that was saying someting positive about someone. A bit over the top but a nice vote of confidence non the less.

My god its a relief not to have to read each page twice for the art to make sence.
