Probably because Scott isn't doing it anymore. The art style is still vaguely manga-like but in a way that doesn't make my eyes bleed. And yet the cover is still Scott. I guess it doesn't make a difference, I think Scott's coming back next month and then dropping off for the new team, but still...
Anyway, since blood and my own fingers attempting to gouge out my eyes weren't in the way of my vision I actually read this issue of Robin. I have to say, the action was clearly presented and though I didn't like the comments made in the middle of a fight at least a good reason was given in addition to Tim trying to lighten his attitude. The new villian, Dark Rider, actually is interesting. How do you stop someone who's truly unaware that at night he trasnforms into a superpowered bounty-hunter? I mean ethically?
On the writing side I'm not happy with Tim passing the buck on the ethical question but I can understand it. Batman comes off as truly concerned about Tim and has some interesting thoughts on Tim's state of mind. The comment on how Tim was smarter than himself (and maybe even smarter than Alfred...?) was interesting, though it seemed out of place. Especially the "We'll end up working for him one day." What? Bruce Wayne is Old Money, probably richer than Bill Gates in the DCU, he'll never end up working for anyone. The comment might work for Green Arrow or Nightwing or anyone who wasn't basically an aristocrat. And the ending is just "bleh" for me. Okay, so Tim has another guardian now. And he's a cool, hip guardian who's got medical training and worked with monks. Oh no! He might notice Tim's bruises and stuff and figure out he's Robin! Why if this hadn't been done multiple times with Jack and wasn't a clishé this'd be really exciting.
Overall I'd say it's a 3/5. Good, but not worth getting unless you like Robin as a character.
And yes, that wasn't a very good review. :p
