View Full Version : The last great Spidey villain

I believe the last great villain Spiderman ever got was Venom, and Carnage was good. Since then, there have really been no big name villains that have stuck and can be put in the same category as Doc Ock, the Green Goblin, and Kingpin. What do you think? Who do you think is the last great Spidey villain?

Venom until the mid-nineties was great, then that's about it. Spidey has a great rouge's gallery but only the few you have mentioned are really big great characters IMO. And due to over exposure and poor plots most have been reduced to shadows of their former selves- Green Goblin is behind everything and hasn't done anything good since dying whilst Doc ock (thanks in part to the second film) was used way too much recently- how often can he break out of jail?
i don't have much hope for any new big villians to create an impact at the mo.

There has been several attempts at great villains. I'll admit carnage was the last really great one.
Kaine, Traveler, and Fusion all have some good potential. All they need is a good story to elevate them.

I think there are potential for more, but for some reason too many of the supervillains are getting killed off to resolve the storyline. I especially hope Morlun pops his head back up again, but perhaps with more personality.

Fusion immediately comes to mind as the last villain who had great villain potential, sadly, however, it was never realized. I'd agree with the majority of posters above that Carnage is the last villain who meets the criteria for "great Spidey villain."

I think Ezekiel is the best Spider-centric character to debut in a while. And I guess he's technically a villain. Also, I'd consider Norman Osborn as a villain (as opposed to Green Goblin) his own entity, and he's certainly made an impact since he returned at the tail end of the Clone Saga.

If by "great" you mean "popular", then okay, I guess you could include Venom and Carnage. I like the Hobgoblin myself.

I agree with you that many of the second-rate villains that authors have been trying to introduce have potential and just need a really good breakthrough story. Kaine and Fusion do come to mind but also Black Tarantula. As long as they´re not overused.
And yes Carnage was the last great Spider-man villain, great not meaning popular.

well i really liked Kaine as the last of the greats. although i wouldn't totally classify him as a villain.

The last great one was Hobgoblin.
I also liked Tombstone (more of Robbie's nemesis though) and Vermin (originally a Capt. America baddie).

I would go with Tombstone. I thought he was a very cool character and even though he was Robbie's nemesis, he still was able to give Spidey a good run for his money when they fought.

I really liked Fusion from Paul Jenkin's Peter Parker Spider-Man, but he's only appeared in 2 storylines written by his creator within an year of each other, so he may not count as anything more than a one-off villain.
Other one-off villains I liked: Morlun, Ezekiel (it's a long arc, but I doubt anyone other than JMS will ever use him), The Thousand, Senator Ward (although I haven't read the issues in a few years, and have since been spoiled by superior Spider-Man stories.)
I guess the last great villain was Carnage, given that I can name two great stories featuring Carnage by different writers (David Micheline- Amazing Spider-Man #361-363, JM Dematteis- Spider-Man/ Batman)

Who came first? Morlun or Fusion? Because those are the latest of the really good ones...

Morlun.
Before that, it was Carnage. I guess Spidey's rogues are so great you can do sooooo many stories and still add character development to the old guys without creating new villains. But that's not really an excuse.

Venom even though I think Kaine has good potential to be one.

I think part of the reason we're not seeing many good new villians anymore is due to how they stretch the stories out. A single villian can run for 4 issues, then we'll get a basically villian-less story for a few issues, then another old villian for 3to five issues, and by the time we've gone though six story arcs, it's two years later we have a new creative team, and there are still old classics that haven't been used much in years.
The older issues gave you a villian or two. next month you had another villian or two. The month after that there was ANOTHER villian or two.

You know it'd be nice if all the Marvel Universe Spider-man books for one year decided they were going to introduce a new villan every month that's not derivative of any character featured in the book before. It'd be interesting to see them try that as a challenge. I feel like most comic writers are writing fan fic these days.

I hate Carnage. He's one of the few comics characters I just can not stand in any way, shape, or form. So there's a bias revealed right there. Venom, I like, so I'd say he was the last one, but:
1. He and Carnage are so derivative of each other as villains it's hard to seperate the two
2. they're out of circulation, unlike Ock and the Goblin, last time I checked.

The original Hobgoblin. Nobody that's come along since has measured up in terms of being interesting.

I hate Carnage and I'm glad he's dead.
On the other hand, I really liked Morlun. I'm glad he's dead too.

Though I hate him, Morlun is the last major threat to Spiderman.

Mrolun may be a threat, but the character just doesn't seem to fit. He seems more like somebody that should be fighting Dr. Strange, Ghostrider, or one of the more super natural heroes.

Since Venom? well on a lesser level i'd say carnage.
Both are David Michelinie creations.
Come back David. :p
(I loved his version of the spider slayers too).
Before that stern's original Hobgoblin.
Come back Roger. :p
