Man, what a great image...the coloring's superb, and I love the tones of the black areas.

Guess Hellboy really was down there all this time. I love the starfish and barnacles on him. Really distinctive image.

Oh man, morna is going to burst when she sees this. Skulls AND starfish! It's a wonderful image, as only Mignola can do.

*sigh*

Is it June yet? :(

Cool!
Looks like Mike and Dave decided to stick with the ink-treatment (greyscales, not solids) they did on The Corpse. Curious to see if they did the same on the story art.

I agree, very nice color, i'm quite fond of this new style-as it was done on the corpse re-printing, the island will be a great undertaking.

any one have a scan of the cover for issue 1?

Re: color

The interior coloring of The Island should be the same as The Third Wish since it will all be collected into the same TPB. However, the color on the new story for The Dark Horse Book of the Dead may show off the new style which has some blended color. At least, that's what was said at last year's ComicCon.

I got this wierd tingly feeling running through my whole body...

Is this normal? What should I do?!

That image got me jumpin'! I'm glad to hear that the coloring will be similar to the third wish. Love that monochromatic look.

Just can't wait...

Tad
03-24-2005, 09:46 AM
I think it was monochromatic because it was mostly under the ocean. :)
What Mike said at the con was that Hellboy has been colored the same way for the past ten years and now they'll be changing it a bit. But then, you were there! Doh!

Okay, that clarification is for people who weren't.

Tad, you know for a fact they will be throwing in The Third Wish and The Island together as a TPB? I've been trying to hunt down a copy of The Third Wish #1 for quite some time now in anticipation of the realease of The Island (since it picks up where Third Wish left off, yet I never got to read Third Wish in its entirety, hence tracking down issue #1)

If this is the case, then I shall breathe a sigh of relief as it pains me to miss out on part of the Hellboy saga...

Uggh... sorry for the long response

Mike and Scott Allie have confirmed that the color in Book of the Dead will be the same as we've seen thus far, Tad. It will be interesting to see though if Mike and Dave change up the coloring for future series or his new Vampire project though.

When was this mentioned? At a con or online? I was all excited about the color for Book of the Dead.

Still curious as for any confirmation regarding The Third Wish (issues 1&2) being collected into a TPB along with The Island...

The color on all stories currently underway will remain the solid inks with flat color, as before. It's possible that Mike's story in next year's Dark Horse Book of Monsters will be colored with wash inks, but I doubt it. Some covers will have the wash inks, some will have the solid inks. BPRD covers will most likely all have the solid inks; both covers of The Island will be wash inks. The cover of Man with the Screaming Brain will be solid inks, and the cover to The Fog will be wash inks.

The Third Wish and The Island will be collected in one trade paperback tentatively called Strange Places.

Maija

Thanks for the clarifications, Scott.

Are the inks on interior pages being kept solid for consistency with the previous stories or because of the technical difficulties of satisfactorily reproducing wash inks on the rougher paper stock?

Either way I'm sure the art will be stunning.

p.s.
Book of monsters- thats grate! The "book of..." series is one of my favorite horror-comic compilations! And they look so cool on the bookshelf... ;)

So Scott, just to clarify, the cover for The Island #1 printed in the most recent previews is not the cover that will appear on the actual comic? That runs contrary to what usually takes place in Previews, but there are always exceptions and changes that don't make it to press on time. The reason I ask this is that the cover to #1 didn't appear to be "ink wash" as you mentioned above. Unless you mean Mike's inks appear as he does them rather than being "flatted" when prepared for the coloring process.

Just curious and thank you in advance, Scott!

I'm pretty sure it IS the cover. With inkwash they mean inks scanned in greyscale as opposed to solid inks (black OR white). Mike's original drawings however, most likely look exactly the same in both cases.

Jakob, almost as soon as I posted that question to Scott last night I got to thinking and you are correct. For some reason I forgot that the cover was scanned in Mike's regular inking style (the same way that his pages look in person) rather than the blacks made solid black (like the pages on the interior comic).

What's really fascinating though are all of the artists that are not printing their books with color over tight pencils rather than full inks (ie- Conan, etc.). I'd love to see Mike do a book that way, but I understand that part of the strength of his style is the fact that his black and white pages are so striking and stark.

Just food for thought :)

I find it comforting that the methods on the covers are planned this far in advance. That's pretty cool. Thanks for the insight, Scott.

Mike's done the cover to our upcoming book The Fog, a prequel to Carpenter's remake of his old flick, which is coming in October, I think. I'm writing the book, and two of my best friends, Todd Herman and Dave Stewart, are doing the pencils and colors, respectively. Andy Owens, one of the best inkers in the industry, and another pal from the Northwest, rounds out the team. We're doing it as a straight-to-trade, 88-page book. It takes place in 1870---a group of Shanghai traders come to America to escape a string of weird deaths at the claws of unseen monsters. There's also a pyromaniac refugee from the Civil War. If you're thrown by how different that sounds from the original film, keep in mind that this sets up the events of the story, which has changed slightly anyway. Todd's only recent comics work is a short story in The Dark Horse Book of the Dead---a copy of which, by the way, I just got from the printer today, and it printed beautifully. Everyone who's seen it so far says Book of the Dead is the best one so far. I think so anyway. We'll give you more info on The Fog soon.
