Yikes! I have a kind of scary story to tell. My house was broken into today while I was at work. Most likely the work of teenagers. Among the things missing was my DVD player, my VCR, and CD player, and my DVD of Hellboy. I am kind of spooked. The police were already here, but there is no sign of forced entry. I think my mom might have accidentally left the front door unlocked when she and my dad came by today. The robbers didn't take my comptuer or anything that I really consider valuable, but the thing I will miss most if actually the DVD of Hellboy. On the bright side, a friend has offered to spent the night to make me feel safer. I implore everyone to keep their doors locked every time. I never though this would happen to me. Stupid stupid stupid me.

Damn, that's awful! We've had bicycles stolen from the garage, but never had anyone invade house (as far as we know). I hope the cops find the little pricks and you get your stuff back.

Me, too. I think it's students from the high school behind my house that probably did it. They were proabably wandering around looking for any open doors...like seeing what they can get away with or something. I don't think anyone was specially after me, though. Still pretty scary.

wow. that really sucks man. too bad booby trapping your house is illegal. :D

What a shame, its such a good movie. On a side note, i found out today Ron Perlman's son goes to my school. Interesting. I have yet to see ron tho, his son tells me hes shooting something in iceland.

Terrible news, Bailzzararco. Morna and I had our previous apartment broken into and it's a creepy feeling walking around your private space thinking about what these people were doing in there. I guess all you can do is be thankful they didn't take more than they did. It sounds like you have a great friend to give you support.

On the bright side, the Hellboy dvd is easy to replace. :)

Thats true, but its more of the principal of haviing to replace it, which means letting them get away with it. I felt the same way when someone stole my car radio, it was like a feeling of helplessness that you cant do anything about it.

Ya impotent anger is what I remember feeling - and lots of it. I found my favorite socks in the woods behind our house... they went through my underwear for god's sake and found some of my insignificant money stashes took a piece of jewellery I bought when I was a kid on layaway, a one-of-a-kind signed piece that I never wore but kept as a piece of art, made of kool things like black coral and mastadon ivory and opal and gold all laminated together. It was a kool object. They would have had no idea of it's value and probably chucked it out or... who knows. They had our crappy little speakers, cds and cd player loaded up into one of our suitcases but obviously didn't know what the Bang and Olfsen receiver even was (it has no dials or features when it's off) they broke our lovely Henkel chef's knife trying to pry open a door grrrr!!! idot kids. Ironically we were insured but never made a claim. We felt violated for a long time. :evilangry

Sorry you had to go through this Bailz it really sucks. My sincere comiserations and coldolences. Go buy yourself another DVD and stick your tongue out at the loosers. :p

That sucks. I have no tolerance for buggers that do that kind of stuff. One has to be careful in confronting them though, as even Canada, some of them carry knives and are starting to find guns to carry.

Not enough officers doing routine police patrols.

Even if they catch the brats (assuming it's kids) they'll probably get a slap on the wrist and allowed to do it again. :evilangry

That Sucks!!!

About a month ago as I was at school/work, my truck parked along the same street it is always parked along, someone smashed in my passenger side window, pried off the dashboard and stole my stereo!

The most amazing part is that there's a fair amount of traffic along the road (both automotive and human). There's also that moment when you open the driver's side door, see shattered glass all over the place and go......"this can't be real!"

I had to drive the hour home that day with no window in Wisconsin weather during February!

Good luck getting things replaced and all. Sorry for your loss, but at least no one was home and injured.

My car got broken into once. You never think about it 'til it happens to you. It's such a violation...I felt creepy for a month after that. Sorry this had to happen to you. Or to anyone, for that matter.

Yikes! I have a kind of scary story to tell. My house was broken into today while I was at work.

That is scary. Don't beat yourself up about it, though. The thief did a bad thing, not you.

I don't want to scare you further, but thieves sometimes go back to a house they've robbed before.

Have you changed the locks in your house? You might want to consider doing that. Put new deadbolts in each door to the outside. An expense - but worth it for peace of mind. If you're not handy, ask a friend to help, or call a locksmith - they are expensive but worth it.

Are shrubs hiding your windows or doors? Cut them back.

Lock all windows. Try opening them from the outside. I learned that one of my window locks was broken this way - I replaced it that day.

Buy a couple of light timers and use them. We use ours all the time, so the lights go on and off at the same time every night whether we're home or not.

Our garage doors do not have windows, so no one can peek in to see if our cars are in there. Are cars are almost always garaged.

Do you have an alarm clock/radio? Set the radio part of the alarm to go on so that music is playing in your house during the day while you're at work.

Talk to your neighbors and let them know what happened. See if anyone else has had trouble, and think about starting a Neighborhood Watch.

These are things you can do to make yourself feel more in control. You will feel better when you take action.

These are things that will deter someone from trying to get in - those cretins are looking for easy marks, and your job is to make your house too hard for them to get in.

Good luck.

Hey, I'm very sorry that happened to you. It's never fun having things stolen from you that are important. I remember when I first moved here to Arizona my step-Dad warned me that bicycle theft is HUGE here. I listened, but only half-heartedly so. After all, I'd never had anything like that stolen from me before. Long story short, I was at the comic store one day after work, came out to get on my bike to peddle home, and all that was left to greet me was a cut chain. Rough feeling definately and that creepiness that Rick mentioned also pervaded my mind for days afterward. However, on a positive note, the one that consoled me was the knowledge that the thieves could take away my "stuff", but thankfully not my ability to make more, buy more, etc. I am still alive, I still take breath, and that's the one thing they didn't take that I have full control over.

Good luck to you! :)

Sheesh - sorry to hear about your troubles! It truly IS a violation, especially when an incident makes you feel unsafe in your own home. Creepy, scary, and distinctly un-nerving.

We live waaaaay out in the boonies, and there was a time when we would have happily left the doors open and never locked the cars in the driveway. But not now. When hubby's on nightshift the dogs ar in the house and the front door is locked and bolted. These are sad times.

Hope you feel better soon, and Andrea has some great ideas for making you feel like you are back in charge of your own life.

Thanks, everyone, for your condolences. My dad changed my locks the very next day, and he's looking into finding a burgular alarm system next month. We just don't have the money right now. I do already have the lights that go on when you approach, one in the front of the house and one at the side of the house, but not one in the back. There are no bushes to hide behind, though. I do plan on fixing the broken fence in the back yard. There have been a couple of high school brats using my back yard as a short cut for a while, and I sort of suspect they were also the kids who broke into my house, but there is no way to proove it of course. The police officer who was here didn't dust for finger prints, even though I pointed out lots of things they touched. He said they don't even try to dust for fingerprints on some things because the surface is uneven, which I understood, that makes sense, but there were other things that did have smooth surfaces that he didn't offer to dust. I talked to my mom yesterday about it, and told her I don't expect ever to hear back from the police about my case. I highly doubt it's serious enough for them to bother with. So far I have been really lucky. Every time I have been the vicitim in a crime it's only been my property, and I don't forget to remember that it could have been worse. Today I noticed I am missing a kitchen knife. It might turn up somewhere, but I suspect it might have been taken. Anyway, I am taking real good care to keep the place locked up tight when I am gone, and I have informed my neighbors about the incident.

Bailzzararco, I am really sorry this happened to you. Someone tried to steal my car this winter-- they got it only as far as the street before the steering wheel locked up, so I was uber-lucky. I just wanted to say I'm thinking about you.

Be safe,

That really sucks! My wife's car was broken into twice in the same week not so long ago, the little punks were horrible theives and only ended up dislodging the door handles on both occassions. The first time cost $300 to fix, the second, another $150, we were crawling in through the trunk for a few days which was a pain...

Hopefully all turns out well for you Bailzzararco, I know if anyone made off with anything HB that I own, I'd be FURIOUS!

Twice in the same Week? Uhg! Man! I've had two cars stolen from me. One was a white Falcon, and the other was a Buick LeSabre. Both were recovered quickly, but the Buick was also vandalized. I was so shocked when I came out of my apartment and my car wasn't there. It just didn't sink in that it had been stolen. Seriously, I went back into my apartment, waited, then went out again....as if I was thinking I temporarily stepped into an alternative dimesion, which, honestly, would have seemed more credible to me than the fact that my car was missing. I just don't think these things will ever happen, even though intellectually I know they happen all the time.

I had a terrible robbery experience where most of my possessions were stolen in my apartement in NYC ( including ALL of my art supplies, and a bunch of jewelry my father had given me, thats what hurt the most). I'm so sorry this happened to you, I still find periodically I end up searching my stuff for something only to realize it was in my apartment, and is gone for good. I was totally shocked and numb after it happened, it didn't really hit me till a few days later. Definately make sure your safe.

This is absolutely true.

I remember being so pissed off after my stereo was stolen out of my car. Driving home with no window, freezing. I got home, I was still pissed off. Then, for some reason, it came to me that there are people with real problems (dying of cancer, homeless, etc.) and it made me quit complaining. Could've been worse.

Now, my situation was different than Bail's. I never really was in danger of coming into contact with the theif in a setting where I could have gotten hurt.

Maybe that's alittle too serious for comic book forums......

It's all relative, Reptile. You go ahead and be pissed off about stuff. It's good for you. Keeping it inside...now that's what makes mass murderers. :)

True, true. I try to explain that to my wife when I'm swearing at the TV during a football game.

O.o That really, really sucks. We've had stuff nicked before, car bits, things from our allotment... But its not just burglary you gotta worry about. Just keep an eye out! some so-and-so's try to set fire to our house. Be very careful, keep safe, ok?

And get a CCTV camera. They always help to deter the little.. *ahem* annoyances
