View Full Version : So, has your interest in Supergirl increased or decreased, as of late?

To be honest, I've had a great fondness for the character since the first time I ever saw her. Horrible, though it was, I still watch the Supergirl movie when it comes on. I have a few comics here and there. I liked the animated version, PAD's version, the return of the Silver Age Supergirl, ... and kinda tolerated or ignored the ones in-between.
With so many different versions teasing us, then turning tail, (not to mention the weak story that introduced the current version) I just don't care that much about the latest version.
I don't know if that'll make sense to anyone else, but while I dig the character, as an idea (and some of her previous incarnations), I DON'T care much about the latest "real" Supergirl. I'll probably follow the stories, anyway, in case I change my mind, later... but I can't say I'm anywhere NEAR as interested as I was in the two Supergirls from PAD's last stand.
Are you more or less interested in the current character?
I am not really interrested in supergirl at all, the new is not an exception.
The matrix-version was the best of them, she had an interessting origin.
But now the cousin of Kal-el? Its some kind of boring and implausible. We have a world of billions kryptonians. And the other kryptonian besides Kal-El, who survived is his blood-relative.

When your brother is the only guy on the planet who designed a rocket to get his kid off, the fact that she's his cousin is slightly more plausible origin than it sounds at first blush.
Call me a purist. The fact that she seems to just be a Kryptonian is enough to get me interested. Never was a fan of the matrix origin. Not saying i didnt like the characters treatment by david, just that the origin never held any appeal for me and thus my enthuasim for the character suffered accordingly.
I like the animated series version the best out of the post-crisis incarnations.

I didn't care for the Supergirl/protoplasm alien version, but I did like the one wearing the while shirt and skirt. Not really sure why, and I know nothing about her origin, but she seemed to be the best of the bunch for me. This new one I am rather luke warm about, and I agree, the story that introduced her was weak.

i'm interested in seeing where they will take her. i like the idea of having a Supergirl. big fan of the t-shirt wearing Supergirl from the animated series also. if DC would only be consistant with her. linda danver, kara zor-el, protoplasm...pick one. and stick with it. all these changes are killing me.
i was kinda partial to Cir-El. i didn't quite get the whole story behind her, but she was cool the few issues i saw she was in. i liked the way Ed McG drew her in Superman/Batman.

I had zero interest in Supergirl until I chanced upon a cheap copy of the first Peter David Supergirl tpb and really enjoyed it. I read all of Peter David's run and enjoyed it. Now that's finished and the characters are gone I'm back to zero interest

So now, if we are to go by the whole 'Power Girl had false memories to think she was Supergirl" Post Crises story, there have been what, 5 "Supergirls"?
1) Power Girl.
2) Matrix.
3) Linda Danvers/Matrix Merge (Different Persona from 2, so counts as a seperate entity in my book).
3.5) Linda, minus Matrix/Earth Angel.
4) That girl who claimed to be the daughter of Kal-El.
5) New Kara (like New Coke!).
Did I miss any?

The person who responded after you reminded me of something. Apparently a recent issue of Superman had another Supergirl that Mxy (I'm not EVEN going to try to spell that name) brought Lois and Clark. Supposedly that's their baby from a potential future. They fast-forwarded in time to show her as another Supergirl.
Of course, there's also the Supergirl 1,000,000 from a few years back.
All of that and we haven't even TOUCHED the Elseworlds stories.
THIS is why I started this thread.

1. Pre Crisis imaginary Supergirl (died in the first issue)
2. Pre Crisis Kara Zor-el Supergirl
3. Matrix Supergirl
4. Linda Davners/Matrix combination Supergirl
5. Linda Davners Supergirl (is this seperate from 4?)
6. Kara Zor-el pre Crisis Supergirl in post Crisis continuity
7. Supergirl One Million (actually the child of Linda and pre Crisis Superman)
8. Cir-el Supergirl
9. Post Crisis Kara Zor-el Supergirl
And then you could include alternates like the animated Supergirl but then you'd have to go with every TV series, serial, animated universe, or even elseworld. So let's stick with pre and post Crisis continuity.

I always thought the PAD Supergirl was way too convuluted for me to get behind. First she is an alien goop pretending to be Kryptonian, then she is an alien goop pretending to be a Kryptonian pretending to be a human sometimes but actually might be an angel from Heaven... ech. It lost me after the 12th issue or so. Not that interested in the direction of the book.
I don't really care that much whether there is or isn't a Supergirl. I am not opposed to it, but I wasn't one of the ones calling for her to return. The way that the new/old Supergirl was alright, though the storyarc itself wasn't that exciting. I like how her re-entrance had the fringe benefit of making Kryptonite more availible to the villain community.

Current Supergirl's origin is:
Supergirl: "I'm your cousin from Krypton! I was in a ship too! Um, but I can't remember my past beyond that minor fact, just like the previous Supergirl who claimed to be your future child. Oh, and I've been bathed in yellow sunlight so I'm already strong!"

No. You need to fix your tags, but otherwise, that post was hilarious... and eye-opening.

Hopefully, this'll be another one of those stories that surprises me. Then I'll be on here gushing about it. I love those kinds of surprises.

Yeah, I noticed the tags right away. Should be fixed now.
The assumption of Supergirl being more powerful is based on, well, Loeb saying in Superman/Batman that she may be more powerful than Superman. The reasoning is she was trapped in her ship slowly moving towards earth and bathed in yellow sunlight, so while Superman's been under the sun for around 30 years (give or take 1000 years fighting Gods I guess) Supergirl's been under direct, concentrated sunlight for at least that long, probably longer.

What about her trip made her exposed to sunlight that Supes WASN'T exposed to (especially considering the fact that I THINK ship was IN something the whole way)... and why would she have been exposed to it longer? ...and why would that make her strongER? ...and when did Loeb say that in Superman/Batman (I'm not sure what you mean since I don't recall a character saying it)? ...and another thing... and another thing ;)

The reasoning, and again I'm going off a faulty memory here, is that Supergirl's ship created it's own yellow sunlight while she was in stasis traveling here. Superman's ship didn't do that. It'd make her stronger because Superman gains his power from the sun, so I assume more sun = more power. But then this is Loeb, who managed to have Superman move Darkseid to the sun from earth faster than the speed of light and trapped him in the Source Wall despite the fact that the Source Wall doesn't work that way. Loeb had Superman (I believe) state in Superman/Batman "She may be even stronger than I am." There was certainly a "may" in there in any event, so hopefully she won't be.

You assume correctly.

The argument could be made. I'd say she's seperate because the previous supergirl had entierly different experiences right after she got out of her ship. I'm kinda using the endpoints as the definition of the characters in this regard, and #6 at the end of Supergirl version 3 is quite seperate from #2 during Crisis on Infinite Earths.

This too is true, but I was only including those who had the Supergirl (okay, or Super-Girl) name. Adromeda is as much Supergirl as Power Girl is, but I didn't include either since neither is... well "Supergirl."

Jeph Loeb recently said in a Convention, when asked about the subject, that "kara doesn't see her powers as Superman does", or something like that. So this, in a way, confirms one of the theories we had been arguing about since that Superman/Batman issue came out. That Kara wouldn't hold back, or holds back less, than Superman.
Superman's (and Superman's only) power levels should be Pre-Crisis again, DAMMIT.

I do not want to see Superman having super-intelligence, blowing out suns with his breath, chaining planets together and moving them along, or anything like that. Unless by Pre-Crisis you mean his first few appearances, where he could only jump rather than fly, was invulnerable enough only to stop a tank shell, and where he took on wife beaters rather than supervillians. No, I don't mean Golden Age. I mean Silver Age.
And I just want his PC power levels to come back, and not the kind of stories themselves. I'd like to keep the tone of the Post-Crisis stories.
And that can be done, my friend. It only needs a good writer.
