Emperor Norton Rules!

My favorite Sandman issue so far is issue #31 (Three Septembers And A January) in which Dream gets into a contest with Despair, Desire and Delirium. The art is great and it features Emperor Joshua Norton and Mark Twain. I really like the idea that Emperor Norton was not mad, just a hopeless dreamer. Wonderful stuff.

Note: I am only up to Sandman #33 so please, no spoilers.

That's my favourite issue! Gaiman + McManus managedd to make me really like the character in one issue. I love the detail that this guy actually existed

A guy dressed up as Emporor Norton* at an office party a couple years ago. Sandman fan that I am, I was the only one that could immediately place the costume without being told. The funny thing is that the costume was actually for a play about Norton and the costume designer had never seen the Sandman comic, Apparently McManus and the designer were working from the same source material and pictures so the outfit was the same.


*actually, though he was wearing the costume he figured no one would recignize it as Norton and was just using the outfit for a character of his own making. Spotted it anyways, :)

That's part of what makes Sandman so great, the inclusion of real people.

I like Sandman and I like Emperor Norton but I always thought that story was kind of awkward.
