It's a German showdown! Who's more influential: Can or Kraftwerk?

This is a joke right?
Can, the group that did several different kinds of music, and actually wrote songs.

You don't get to have an opinion because you are a nutbag.
Wheres my dog crocker, he loves Can.
And i'm fair to trascendental right now to write why they are so good.

On reflection, since the question was actually "who's more influential?" . . .

Definitely Kraftwerk.

It's okay, Alex. Can's starting to catch up.

agree with Jonathan, if the question were "who do you love more?" - Can would win by a mile, as well as if the question were "who's influence was better?"...but Electronic music as a whole must lend it's regards to Kraftwerk, so they definitely have a more widespread influence. of course, i think Kraftwerk owes gratitude to Silver Apples personally, as well as Tangerine Dream. But there's no question Can is by far the superior band, and should be recognized as the monoliths of krautliness t'were this a rumble.

I'll get to this later after I've had my breakfast and tea. (Okay normally I drink coffee, but today I want to do something different.)

Ok, i reread it, and apprently, people are correct, he asked influential, ill give it to kraftwerk, because they lead to an entire shitty genre.
But Can still rocks ten ways to sunday, and is much much better.

So many kinds of techno! What sets this one apart?

Techno started in Belleview, MI. It was just a bunch of guys who was copying the minimalist sound of Kraftwerk on shitty, pawnshow 303s so they could make money to get out of Belleview. The reason they emulate Kraftwerk was that the only record store in the area was one that delt in expriment & minimalist music. Belleview later influances Detroit Tech & in turn is adopted in NYC as Disco Tech. It gets carried to England and is reborn as House.

I haven't heard Soon Over Babaluma, so I'll go with Autobahn.

So it seems people agree that Kraftwerk were more influential (until Crocker chimes in with the ideas he was telling me the other night, that lazy bastard), but most think Can were the better band. Why's that?

because influence doesn't = talent, innovation or greatness. not saying Kraftwerk doesn't have these, just saying the two don't necessarily equate.

Ah, yeah, my question wasn't clear. I meant, why is Can the better band? People go crazy and explain the greatness that is Can.

oh i will. yes. i will.

For starters, they have one of the greatest drummers to ever live in Jaki Liebezeit. though his patterns may seem repetitive, on closer listen they are extremely complex polyrhythms and the guy has a drumming motor that NEVER stops. i'm constantly impressed with his ability to quickly shift gears from pattern to pattern.

secondly, there's Damo Suzuki. alot of people like Malcolm Mooney, and for good reason - but Can wouldn't be Can without Damo. One of the most original voices in rock history.

throw in the consistent and tight playing of Michael Karoli on guitar and Holger Czukay on the bass, and you have some great fuggin rock music.
four straight flawless albums from Tago Mago to Soon Over Babaluma, combined with other quality releases with Malcolm Mooney...i'd say that's what sets them apart from Kraftwerk, who had 3 or 4 good albums but i'd call nothing of there's transcendent, whereas Can's big 4 are pretty much rock heaven for me. in my uneducated opinion, it's near impossible to create with just synths and drum machines the calibre of rock that a band with the talent of Can created. that's just my take.
