So, how long after Morrison leaves until the title turned to crap? :)

I read the first Milligan issue, and it seemed to be starting something interesting. Buddy eating horses and urinating on the sidewalk and whatnot.

And I read one Tom Veith issue which was not so good. Buddy shooting at rainbow monsters with lasers coming out if his hands, or something.

So does anything worthwhile happen in the series before Buddy turns into a horrible Big Bird monster?

Much like Alan Moore and Swamp Thing, Animal Man has been ruined in the future for all other creators than Morrison.

I don't think Animal Man "turned to crap" until the very end when Prosser was writing it, mainly because he seemed to be running in place trying to figure out something new to do with the character. Milligan just wrote one 6-issue arc, which compares well with Morrison. The Veitch run was not up to that standard, but aside from going on too long it was fine...and you get mostly Steve Dillon art, which is a treat. And I enjoyed Delano's run, which started 6 months before the launch of Vertigo. It really was "pre-Vertigo," because they changed the title to Mature Readers then. I realize it's not everyone's taste, but I liked the strangeness and ecological preachiness. The title definitely had a strong personality during his run.

I'd say the title was so-o through Veitch's run, then got good when delano came on and gradually descended to crap throughout his run. Prosser took it lower than anyone thought possible

Morrison + Milligan's runs are fantastic though. Really I'd stop after Milligan's run

I personally did not mind Tom Veitch's run on Animal Man. It was that that actually got me into reading it, because Tom lived in my home town and we would chat at the local comic shop on occasion about his upcoming projects (he did The Light and Darkness War, as well as the Star Wars sequel Dark Empire).
A very gracious man, who I felt was very under-rated.

The Milligan arc was quite good. I wasn't that impressed with Veitch and only liked some of what Delano did.

Delano's run was very intriguing with animal man finally leaving the superhero life and just spending time with his family and that crazy cult of maxine entertaining reminds me of tim allen's home improvement sitcom
