While reading No Man's Land i came acrossed issues in it where it was drawn like maybe not like "kids". Big eyes, not as detailed, etc. Example, the issue when Batman and Gordon have meet in his "garden".

I noticed that too in spiderman, he'd have a little body and big head. I dunno if I'm the only one the feels that way.

But i understand it cant be super detailed all the time.

Yeah I definately agree. I don't know if this is what you mean, but I personally don't like stuff like this:

To me, it just doesn't look at all like the characters I like.

Do you mean manga inspired art?

That's why i quit reading the most recent run of "Spectacular Spider Man"; the artwork was horrendous.

yes foxfire thats what i'm talking about. It may work for some characters but i definitely don't think that Batman should be drawn that way because he's more dark, more sinister and should be drawn that way.

And no not manga, well at least not the manga i read, because manga seems to be more crisply drawn and i think the fact that almost all manga is black and white may have something to do with it.

I haven't read Spectacular Spiderman lately but it did have that kinda art when i did read spiderman. Kind of why i stopped reading Spiderman because it tended to have it more often than other i read. Maybe the nature of the character.

I dunno. I could be wrong.

Of course the funny thing is that many manga I like doesn't look like this "manga-style" that US publishers think is the rage. Berserk (http://images.animanga.nu/fanart/2216/berserk.jpg) , some of Hellsing (http://www.boukenshin.net/hellsing/integra/int23.jpg) , Planetes (http://www.projectrho.com/rocket/controlroom2.jpg) , Blame! (http://www.zeruels-world.de/zwhp/anime/blame/blame1.gif). They all tend toward more realistic styles, espeically Berserk. Well, maybe save for Puck's comedic scenes and the kids later on.

you named the two manga i like the most Berserk and Hellsing. I have the first 6 vol. on paperback and read 11-29 on on website. I can't wait for the next Hellsing volume to come out. I think its due sometime soon tho i cant remember the date.

The one thing about the Berserk series is that Zodd doesn't show up enough. But thats just my thinking. Zodd is slowly becoming my favorite villain.

The fight in volume 22 between The Black Swordsman and Zodd is just awesome i think.

Not to derail the topic, but volume 6 of Hellsing is due out next week. Found some chapters online, but despite the cliffhangers, I decided to wait for the print copy.

As for the Vol 22 fight in Berserk, there is a new Berserk video game out in Japan. You actually play that fight! I pray that game comes out in the US! It begins just about where the anime ends (the eclipse).

Back to the whole kiddy characters, I think the manga craze is partially to blame. If they want to catch my eye for manga, let's see them emulate some of the creative and different story telling techniques used in many manga. Plus I'd like to see actual manga artists do some US work. Blame!'s Niehi on Wolverine: Snikt! or Kia Asyamara for all to short a time on Uncanny X-Men.

i knew there was a Berserk game for the Dreamcast system (which i have) but i would be all over if it makes it to the ps2 system.

thanks for the info on the Hellsing volume.

There seems to be more new manga these days and somehow it keeps getting worse lol. I know Berserk was started back in the 70s. I'd love to find out when Hellsing was started.

Black Swordsman/Batman crossover. sounds crazy. i like. muhahahahahahahaha

Kids should look like kids, adult characters like adults.

How many underage characters DC has, anyway? Robin, maybe two or three other Teen Titans...?

that sort of art is dope i personally would rather see a neal adams, jim aparo or kelly jones bat art but not those manga styled ones

Depends on the character. Guys like Batman and Dardevil should be kept more realistic. I'm not entirely opposed to it- but i tihnk it would kill the mood. I liked Humberto Ramos's spiderman but the guy who came after him ( i tihnk after the Countdown arc) I couldn't stand. Long as it fits the book I don't care.

Two different beasts.

Anyway, manga is a very big category, which although being built
upon certain stylistic similarities (just as american comic books do)
have a very wide range of styles from the crispness of Berserk and
Lone Wolf and Cup to a more "kiddie" style you see much more of
in animation.

I suspect that many if not most manga inspired artists are more
inspired by the anime, than actual manga.

If I may invade your topic with more Berserk speak... I belive Berserk was started in like late 1989/1990. I belive the first Calling Manga Island column here at CBR said that. Unless you mistyped that and mean that.

Oh and only now did I notice your name. A Black Swordsman/Batman sounds cool, but I got no clue how that would work. Seeing Kentarou Miura draw Batman would be cool. Of course I'd love to see Nihei from Blame! draw Batman and epecially Gotham.

just saw the last DVD of Berserk at his anime club,

I don't even consider the crappy artwork to be "inspired" by manga. No, to me, it looks "American Saturday Morning Cartoon" inspired. This is because when I first saw the artwork like this Humberto Ramos guy's work, that's what I immediately thought of... American Saturday Morning Cartoons. It doesn't even look remotely like anime or manga to me.

This artwork is okay if you're six-years-old and watching "The Adventures of Captain Cool-Guy" while he battles the nefarious Lumberjack-Man and thwarts his plot to rule the world by stealing everyone's dirty laundry. But the art just doesn't work in a a serious super-hero comic book.

Lumberjack-Man

I'm a lumberjack, and I'm okay.
I sleep all night and I work all day.

MOUNTIES:
He's a lumberjack, and he's okay.
He sleeps all night and he works all day.

BARBER:
I cut down trees. I eat my lunch.
I go to the lavatory.
On Wednesdays I go shoppin'
And have buttered scones for tea.

MOUNTIES:
He cuts down trees. He eats his lunch.
He goes to the lavatory.
On Wednesdays he goes shopping
And has buttered scones for tea.

He's a lumberjack, and he's okay.
He sleeps all night and he works all day.

BARBER:
I cut down trees. I skip and jump.
I like to press wild flowers.
I put on women's clothing
And hang around in bars.

MOUNTIES:
He cuts down trees. He skips and jumps.
He likes to press wild flowers.
He puts on women's clothing
And hangs around in bars?!

He's a lumberjack, and he's okay.
He sleeps all night and he works all day.

BARBER:
I cut down trees. I wear high heels,
Suspendies, and a bra.
I wish I'd been a girlie,
Just like my dear Papa.

MOUNTIES:
He cuts down trees. He wears high heels,
Suspendies, and a bra?!

[talking]
What's this? Wants to be a girlie?! Oh, My!
And I thought you were so rugged! Poofter!...

[singing]
He's a lumberjack, and he's okay.
He sleeps all night and he works all day.

He's a lumberjack, and he's okaaaaay.
He sleeps all night and he works all day.

Humberto Ramos is a different category again. As I understand it, his style has mexican roots.

But when you look at cartoons like Teen Titans Go! that come complete with sweatdrops and superdeformed faces, you can't deny the influence anime has had on American cartoons.

I might be a child of the four-color old school, but I prefer a bit more realism in my comic art, even if the subjects are teens. Not saying they can't be stylized (Bruce Timm's pencils come to mind), but I look for something a bit more adult.

I just read Marvel's Sentinel last night, the first digest trade. Even though it was Iron Giant with a Sentinel, it was pretty good. The art was kinda annoying. They all looked like grade schoolers, middle schoolers at most. I couldn't belive they were supposed to be in high school. Udon really made them look too young.

The Teen Titans cartoon artwork is most obviously anime inspired, but I'm talking about Saturday morning cartoons that go way back before the recent influx of animation from Japan.... Y'know, the stuff you and me used to watch in the 80s? Some of the current junk on the Disney channel strikes me as being still in this uninfluenced vein that Ramos hand his clones' art reminds me of. Call it "anime-inspired" if you want, but it looks nothing like the artstyle.

TBH, I have no problem with that Amerimanga (TM) art style. Anime style would be more accurate than manga, but either way there is a lot of similarity. (not with Ramos though as I said earlier)
