In the last two weeks I've purchessed
Lords and Ladies by Terry Pratchett
Insomnia by Stephen King
'Salem's Lot by Stephen King
Black House by Stephen King
Wolves of the Calla by Stephen King
if someone had told me I would be reading Steven King last year at this time I would have called them a fool to their face. Dark Tower has got me interested in King's writing and it's all pretty good. And I hate Horror. I had read The Stand before......but that was fluke, The Stand was a Survival Post apoc adventure..... clearly not average King!
I was an idiot.
To bad I can't start Black House yet, but I can NOT find a copy of The Talasman anywhere. I only bought Black House because the Hard Cover was on sale for 7 bucks at Borders, and I'm s sucker for hard covers. Course now I have to go the extra step and find The Talasmen as a hard cover too now.......

Got -
Lone Drow(Forgotten Realms novel)-I don't expect much out of it after how bad Thousand Orcs was but might as well complete the trilogy. I think Salvatore has killed Drizzt through overuse.
Grey Knights(40k novel)- Don't recognize the author so we'll have to wait and see if it's good.
Rogue(Star Trek: Next Generation novel)- I haven't purchased a Star Trek novel in six years(last one I got was at the 99 cent store and it was terrible) but this looks interesting from the back of the book and brief skim I did. Here's hoping it's not crap.
Search for Power(Dragonlance Novel): I got this free. The salesman and I were discussing various fantasy novels, some of our favorites and what we didn't like and he just tossed it in my bag free of charge(seperate of the buy 4 get 1 free sale).
Chrono Crusade #1(Graphic Novel): Some friends told me they like this so I figured what the heck?
Oh My Goddess #18(Graphic Novel): I'm a fan of the Oh My Goddess series.
Dark Ages: Vampire, Dark Ages: Inquisition, High Clans, Inquisition Companion, and Complete Divine. There was a buy 4 books, get one free sale going on. I was only going to get three RPG books but with the sale I purchased a fourth so I could get the fifth free.

I went nuts at the used book store today:
Milton's God - William Empson.
I've already read this, but it's out of print so I couldn't resist picking up a copy for myself. Great book; Empson's view is that Milton's god is a wicked and evil tyrant and that Satan was therefore justified in rebelling against him, even though that rebellion failed and Satan himself deteriorated into selfish and evil behaviour later on.
The Reign of the Phallus - Eva Keuls.
From the back cover: "The author's argument [is] that classical Athens was more sexually polarized and repressive of women than any other culture in Western history."
Spartan Reflections - Paul Cartledge.
A very recent collection of essays by "the leading international authority on ancient Sparta" (according to the inside cover blurb).
Warfare in Antiquity - Hans Delbrouck.
This is a translation of a book first published (in German) in 1900. I've always been interested in the military history of the ancient world and this looks like it covers a lot of the areas I'm curious about.

NOTHING LASTS FOREVER by Roderik Thorp. First published in 1979, this novel was the basis for the original DIE HARD. For something that spawned its' own sub-genre of action movie, this book has been pretty elusive. I mean, I could have ordered it online any time, but I'm talking about walking into a shop, even a dusty, cruddy used book shop and finding it.
I'd read Walter Wager's 58 MINUTES, the inspiration for DIE HARD 2 quite a while ago. It was a good, quick read. Wager was a good writer who will be missed.

Today I browsed in a used-book store and bought...
The New Yorker War Album, a collection of cartoons from 1940-1945, all dealing with the war or (more commonly) its effects on civilian life. I go gaga for this kind of cartooning, so it was a great $3 find.
The Best of the Brownies' Book, a collection of material from a magazine that ran in the 1920s aimed at black children. W.E.B. DuBois was the publisher, I believe, and he kept it high-class and WASP with a tan. Interesting stuff.
And God's Fifth Column, a history of Western Civilization from 1890 to 1940 (my favorite fifty-year period, bar none) by a neglected novelist of the time. Highly personal, even outlandish stuff, but well worth the time if you're a history/literature buff like me.
And some comics and CD's.

Finally. . since it's out in Paperback to match my other books. .
I now own "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix"
I start reading it this weekend.
I got it in paperback too generally I do most of my reading on the subway or bus and I really didn't want to lug that giant hard cover around. So I figured I'd wait it out. Phoenix is kind of angsty so far. Almost expect Harry to slam the door and blare Radiohead records all day. But hey it's fun enough and a quick read.
Also bought "Scanner Darkly" by Phillip K. Dick based on my brothers recomendation and "Girl in the Landscape" by Johnathan Lethem whose stuff I've liked what I've read like Motherless Brooklyn (detective with tourettes), Gun With Occasional Music (Raymond Chandler with talking animals), As She Climbed Across the Table (a love triangle between a professor, a scientist and some sort of black hole). I'm waiting for Fortress of Solitude to come out in paperback as well. Cause that one looks pretty heavy.
I think "A Scanner Darkly" is a great book, one of Dick's best - which is really saying something, because there's lots of competition. Supposedly it's in the process of being made into a movie right now.

I didn't plan it this way, but I must look like a real sickie to the used book store clerk. I came across a copy of THE MAGICIAN by W. Sommerset Maughm and also THE GATES OF HELL by Dennis Wheatley.
I'm not an occult guy by any means, but I do know that Aleistir Crowley was the basis for THE MAGICIAN and that Wheatley, in his youth, met Crowley who inspired his series of novels about fearless adventurers battling Satanists (yes! I know Crowley wasn't a Satanist, but both Maughm and Wheatley were looking for easily understandable answers and to write fiction that sold).

I've got two of the books. The Janet Evanovich novel is great.
I haven't gotten to Unity yet.
I'm thinking about getting some of the Dracula books. I'm not really sure about what these characters are about and all. I've only read Ann Rice novels.
I never read Stoker's books or any of the followups, just the movie, which I thought was very good. but how do the novels compare? Anyone? Are they worth it?
Any interesting things about Mina or Van Helsing that I should read?
I've heard the practical aspect of Dracula is about a common thing, that is, history of western and eastern cultures combining. Is this true? Are there any 'study' books on Stoker's Dracula that I should consider?
Thanks for any input. :)

Neverwhere is a lot more accessible, imo. It was originally a BBC mini-series, but Gaiman was unimpressed with the results and he made it into a book to flesh it out and put more of what he imagined into it.

I just ordered a chunk of stuff over the net -- there's a *lot* of books I'm really interested in being released this fall.
-- Greg Rucka, _A Gentleman's Game_ (spinning off of his "Queen and Country" spy comics series)
-- Neal Stephenson, _The System of the World_ (part three of his massive series)
-- Susanna Clarke, _Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell_ (huge fantasy-historical described as a sort of Harry-Potter-meets-Jane-Austen, getting rave reviews from the likes of Neil Gaiman, and if it's at the standard of Clarke's short fiction, it deserves them)
Recently I've also picked up:
-- Leigh Richards, _Califia's Daughters_ (pseudonymous science fictional debut of the excellent mystery author Laurie R. King)
-- Gardner Dozois, _The Year's Best Science Fiction_ (SF short fiction from 2003 -- I like reading these because it gives me a taste of authors I might not otherwise try, and Dozois's selections usually match my taste fairly well)
-- China Mieville, _The Iron Council_ (big gritty steampunk fantasy in the same world as _Perdido Street Station_ and _The Scar_, both of which I loved)
-- Ken MacLeod, _Newton's Wake_, and Sean Stewart, _Perfect Circle_, which I've mentioned in the What You're Reading thread.

I was browsing in the bookstore and grabbed Alexander Irvine's _One King, One Soldier_, which appears to blend early 20th century baseball and the Korean War in with the Grail legend. I was surprised and pleased to see it, since I thought Irvine's _A Scattering of Jades_ was very good (particularly for a first novel) in a Tim Powers-like secret-history sort of way, but I hadn't known he had a second novel being published yet. So yay!
Also spotted a few which I'll probably get sometime. David Mitchell's _Cloud Atlas_, M. John Harrison's _Light_, and John Burdett's _Bangkok 8_ now out in paperback.

I picked up the new Tom Wolfe novel, I AM CHARLOTTE SIMMONS. It's . . . I dunno. I'm a few hundred pages in, and something just isn't clicking. In some places it's a fantastic satire of modern college life, in others it's an illustration of Wolfe's inability to cross the generation gap. The main character, Charlotte, atlernates between being an appealing and relatable college freshman and being some sort of wish fulfillment character for people who disapprove of the aforementioned modern college life.
Maybe I'm too close to the source material, being on a college campus, or too far away, going to Midwestern public universities instead of Eastern private ones, but I'm just not connecting.

I went to the Borders at Compuware Headquarters during lunch. I picked up three Tokyo Pop trades (Tokyo Tribes Vol 1, Planetes Vol 4 Pt 1 and Threads of Time Vol 1). I also picked up The Hunting Wind by Steve Hamilton. I couldnt find Thor: Son of Asgard or Runaways: Teenage Wasteland.
I ended up hitting a Barnes and Noble Superstore last night but struck out. I still couldnt find Sunset Express by Robert Crais. It's not suprising...but I was hoping. I also couldnt find Thor: Son of Asgard or Runaways: Teenage Wasteland.
Problem is I had ordered The Hunting Wind by Steve Hamilton more than once from Half.com. I had just had one cancelled a few days pror. Of course when I get home.....the book has just come in the mail.

Hope you saved your receipt. But I'd take it back Saturday, because you know ALL stores will be madhouses on Thanksgiving Friday... *shudders*
*thread drift* Hubby used to work at a stand-alone department store in a southern country area small city. He said that T-Friday was nuts... they had a blue light they'd move around the store for a quick 70% off... There were these two old ladies who were chasing it around the store, and DELIBERATELY ramming their carts into each other to get to the stuff. Like something out of a movie: viscious old ladies with shopping carts. Heh heh. He said the staff would plant the blue light and run for their lives.

The problem is I have different versions of the same book on my wishlist. I also select the same book from several different sellers. When you have 30-70 books in your cart, its very easy to miss some. I took the extra precaution of typing out what I had before ordering and I still screwed up.
Good news is that one of MR. WHITE'S CONFESSION got cancelled.

It's always better to read from the start, can you order the Keeper book?

With some series the reader can start in the middle perfectly fine, but with Rucka's I agree with Deathstroke: it's best to read in order. Each book's individual main plot is self-contained, but there's a whole lot of character development and evolving relationships continuing through the course of the series that work best in order. So I'd suggest ordering _Keeper_ (I believe it's still in print and all).
The full order of the Atticus Kodiak books is:
_Keeper_
_Finder_
_Smoker_ (my personal favorite)
_Shooting at Midnight_ (containing Kodiak but mostly featuring a supporting character from the earlier books)
_Critical Space_
Completely separate is _A Fistful of Rain_.

At Half-Price Books, picked up hardcovers of Lamb and Fluke by Christopher Moore, then at Borders I picked up The Wizard by Gene Wolfe.
Moore is my favorite humor writer, and I've heard very good things about Lamb (though I'm starting to really doubt he'll ever top Coyote Blue and Bloodsucking Fiends. The Wizard is the conclusion to the story Wolfe started in The Knight, which was a fantastic book - probably the best mythic fantasy since Tolkien.

I've read that one too, which I agree was good but didn't really grab me.
Also _Towing Jehovah_, which was better. More overtly religious satire, better tied together and more intriguing.
I read _Only Begotten Daughter_ (more religious satire) and _This is the Way the World Ends_ (post-apocalyptic emotional drama) about ten plus years ago, so I can't remember them well. They didn't leave a huge mark, but my reading tastes were different then too.
My favorite is probably his short stories in _Bible Stories for Adults_. Some snappy, snarky bits, and some more serious stuff. I definitely recommend that.

Picked up Collapse, the new Jared Diamond, too but put it back. It was $30 and I won't have time to read it until probably the time the paperback comes out and my store always has used copies available within weeks of the new ones.
I was mainly there to get children's books for a baby shower. I always get pretty much the same ones, depending on what's in stock. Based on what has won awards and such for quality PLUS is something I remember enjoying myself. This time it was Bread and Jam for Francis, Whistle for Willie, Tikki Tikki Tembo, Over in the Meadow, and The Poky Little Puppy. They were out of Harry the Dirty Dog.
