View Full Version : Should the JSA have more spinoff books?

Given the rather gluttenous size of the Justice Society of America, it's getting hard to focus on character development without outright ignoring members. Last I counted, there were nearly 20 members.
Currently, Hawkman has a solo title. If there were spinoffs, what books would you like to see?

Mr. Terrific. I love what I've seen of the character.
Jay Garrick Flash. Yeah, yeah, never happen. But I love the elder statesman nature, and you could do a really good book with him as such, even being a person who mentors a lot of the younger heros. Eh, I like the idea of him as seeing younger superheros as his "kids and grandkids"
Though honestly, I could see most of the JSA in solo books, though I think Sand and Hawkgirl would be the least interesting.

A Justice Society Classified book will come out this summer so there should be a lot more stories told there by a diverse set of creators. Personally, as I've said elsewhere on the board, I'd rather there just be a book called Justice Classified to tell stories about both the the League and the Society. Maybe even just a book called DC Teams Classified so creators can come on to tell stories about the Titans and any other teams there have been. Of course, this would just be a roundabout way of bringing back Legends of the DCU which wasn't fully used the first time around.

I would be interested in a Mr. Terrific comic, but it'd have to have an awesome writer whose committed to hanging in there long enough for the great stories to be associated with the character (thus creating a high standard for Mr. T stories) and a real commitment from DC to 1) market the book and 2) give it a chance to make its mark.
Since I'm the one making the wish, I had to include those conditions.

Green Lantern (Alan Scott) in WHATEVER incarnation.
I wanna see more stories with him in them. As it stands, if I see him appear in any other book, the chances that I'll scoop it up increase dramatically before I get past the cover.
*has an idea for a thread*

A couple of buddy books would be good
Mr. Terrific, Dr. Midnite and Sand in one
Flash & Green Lantern in another.
Even Jakeem, SSK and Powergirl would be an interesting set up.
Not that some of these guys couldn't hold a book on it's own, but I'd like to see the dynamic of these characters on a smaller basis than normal JSA.

Thank you for the responses. I thought I was the only one who could see some JSA spinoffs.
* I would love to see Mr. Terrific and Dr. Mid-Nite get a team-up book. An idea where they were more into secret agent/detective work, featuring the likes of the D.E.O. and Dr. Bones, new versions of Kobra and Brother Blood, the Suicide Squad and Ra's al Ghul. Hourman (preferably Rick Tyler, but maybe Rex given his action-junkie status) could make a guest appearance as the informal third member.
* What about Alan Scott and a book focusing on Opal City? I would like to see Sentinel interacting with The Shade, Elongated Man and Jack Knight. Even occasionally going to Gotham City to wax philosophy with Batman.
* For a fun book, a Power Girl series would be interesting. I never quite understood the logic of resurrecting or creating a Supergirl when Power Girl was around.

A Terrific/Mid-Nite team-up book would be awesome! Those two characters compliment each other well.

I'd LOVE to see Alan Scott in his own book! He's my favorite of all the GL's and has such a rich history and powers. Realistically I don't think many of them could carry a title... but I was also a fan of Stars and STRIPE and would enjoy seeing Courtney in her own book again.

I think a Jakeem Thunder book would work well for a younger audience. It would fit alongside the likes of Static Shock.
A new Dr. Fate series would be nice. I know there was a mini a couple of years ago, but I think he could hold his own ongoing book.
An ongoing Dr. Mid-Nite book would be awesome. He could work well in his own solo book or, as you guys have said, alongside Mr. Terrific.
You know, all of the characters are so full of personality and different that there's really not one that I can think of that wouldn't do well in their own book.

If there were to be a number of JSA solo titles, wouldnt DC be guilty of the same crime as Marvel as it relates to the X-Men?

I think Dr. Mid-Nite, Mr. Terrific and Dr. Fate are all strong candidates for their own books. Their issues of JSA All-Stars were pretty darned enjoyable. Though Mid-Nite might be tough to do without coming across as a Batman or Daredevil ripoff.

Why? Most all of these characters originally come from their own series, were the main attraction in golden age multi-story books, or are descendants of those guys. The X-Men were almost all created to be part of that team.
Besides, there isn't JSA, Astonishing JSA, Age of JSA, Uncanny JSA, & X-Treme JSA, and Mr. terrific doesn't guest-star in every single DC book.

"If there were to be a number of JSA solo titles, wouldnt DC be guilty of the same crime as Marvel as it relates to the X-Men?"
I think those are different situations.
1.) The spinoffs would be solo adventures of JSA characters, similar to how The Avengers (Captain America, Iron Man and Thor) and The JLA (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern and Aquaman) have its members operating on their own. The X-Men core books are basically three X-Men teams, a book training young mutants/potential X-Men, the founder re-establishing an island/nation ... the same idea generally regurgitated (most of the X-books are team books).
2.) The X-Men's adventures are pretty much isolated from the Marvel Universe, despite having so many of the publisher's books X-related. I would not propose having The JSA's members detached from the DC Universe.
and Mr. terrific doesn't guest-star in every single DC book.
Although it would be awesome if he did!

Other ideas:
* I forgot about Dr. Fate, and a series on Hector Hall would be interesting. Not only on his relationship with his father Hawkman and mother Hawkgirl, but his old Infinity Inc. teammates and Gemworld. I would not mind seeing Dove guest-star.
* Another book, this one featuring former JSAer Captain Marvel. Since coming into the DC Universe, Captain Marvel has been used basically as a Superman clone. A separate series would be the chance to differentiate Earth's Mightiest Mortal from that pigeonhole.

I was just thinking that if DC did put a bunch of solo books they could look as money grubbing as Marvel. It may sound naive, but I'd like to think that DC wants the JSA to have more integrity than the X-Men. I hope that makes sense.

It makes sense, but the problem with The X-Men franchise is that all the books are basically team books with the same theme, just with different members. My complaint with The X-books is that they all have the same premise and are isolated from the rest of Marvel.
What everyone else is suggesting is that several members should be taken out of the JSA and given an individual spotlight, similar to how The JLA's and The Avengers' members have their own books. The adventures are not tied to the JSA.

i'm not sure about a spinoff like 'mr terrific' 'cause i don't think it'd survive. but something like JSA:Classified (which is already gonna be done) or an Avengers West Coast/TItans West/JLA:Elite title wouldn't be too bad
but if we're complaining about a large cast here, how about the old Legion? they only had one book

I would like to first establish who comprises the entire JSA roster.
You've got the originals: Flash-Wildcat-GL-Hawkman-Hippolyta/WW.
The updates: Dr. Fate,Atom Smasher, Star Girl, Jakeem, Terrific, Hourmans, Midnite, Sand, Hawkgirl the Freedom Fighters: Uncle Sam, Human Bomb, Iron Munro, Phantom Lady,Ray, Black Condor previous status members Captain Marvel, Black Canary, Crimson Avenger?, Black Adam, the newbies Power Girl, and the misc Shining Knight, Vigilante, Airwave, Damage, Stripe, Dr. Occult.
Near as I can figure, you have 12 regulars and about 17 reservists, and 3 of indeterminate status.
-A tie in with the new reincarnated Spectre could be cool-hope it's back to
Jim Corrigan.
-an updated Freedom Fighters reserve unit with some new blood.
-anything with Black Adam and Hawkman-the book misses them.
-the Star Girl/Marvel relationship

How do you figure The Freedom Fighters as members of The JSA? They've appeared fighting as a part of a collective unit in "Princes of Darkness" as their own group. And even with Hippolyta dead, there are a lot of characters who either are current or inactive members.
ACTIVE: Jay Garrick, Wildcat, Alan Scott, Hawkman and Rex Tyler are the originals. Then you have Rick Tyler, Dr. Fate, Mr. Terrific, Sand, Dr. Mid-Nite, Jakeem Thunder, Star Girl, Power Girl and Hawkgirl.
INACTIVE: Atom Smasher, Black Adam, Jack Knight, Black Canary and Captain Marvel.
That's still 14 active members and five inactive members. The Shining Knight has not shown up yet. The Crimson Avenger was not a member.

Outside of a series for Karate Kid in the 1970s, none of the Legion of Super-Heroes had a solo series (excluding Superboy and Supergirl, of course). I looked at the LSH as I do The X-Men in that the members were created solely to be in a team.

Matt Wagner did a Doc Mid-Nite book. I have the first part. I don't know if it's in continuity or not, but it was great. Didn't seem like Batman or Daredevil at all.

This is what I would like to see. Mini-series more than regular series. This way each character could get some stories in, but if it was just a regular series...I would have to go with the consensous and pick Mr. Terrific, I think he is one of the only ones that could hold a monthly title.

As I stated in another post I would like to see a Green Lantern series that would spotlight his past away from the JSA. It would be ok to have some of the interaction with them but keep it to a minimum.
Have it show more about his relationships with his family and non JSA friends and on his solo adventures through out the years.
A Mr. Terrific book would also be interesting in my opinion. Heck, I would buy a solo book on just about any member of the JSA.

I think DC could benefit from a "Green Lantern Chronicles" book that could follow the adventures of the other GLs, Kyle Rayner, John Stewart, Guy Gardner, and the original Alan Scott. You could have different arcs focusing on different people, and it would be nice to see what everyone is up to while Hal is back in the spotlight.

I think Mr. Terrific should have a solo book. Jay, Alan, Ted and Rex should have a title focusing on them maybe mixed in with some older stories a la Strange Adventures. And Powergirl, Jakeem, Dr. Fate, Rick, Capt. Marvel, Star, Sand, Mid-nite and Hawkgirl could get more attention in JSA Classified. It's funny, but one of the things I love most about the JSA is the relationships between the members, historically and otherwise. You just don't have that in the JLA or any other team book.

Are any of the JSA characters really popular enough to warrant having their on ongoing solo title? Doubtful. Now a well done mini series or two is something I would definitely be interested in.

Flash and Green Lantern.
I want it monthly, and I want it to last forever.
If it just featured Alan Scott and Jay Garrick, that would please me to no end.
But if I REALLY had my druthers, it would also have story arcs featuring Barry Allen and Hal Jordan (set in the Silver Age, of course). Setting the Scott/Garrick stories in the 40s would just fine with me, too.
