Hey, I'm new to the site and have mostly been a manga person for the last few years and am just getting back in american comics (my big bro has a good sized collection of mostly spiderman) starting with Batman.

I only have a few right now. My list is as follows:
Batman: Knightfall Trilogy
Batman: No Man's Land Vol. 1-5
Death of Superman

On my wish list are:
Batman:Contagion
Batman: Cataclysm
Batman: The Killing Joke
Batman: A Death in the Family

I am not limited to just DC so if anyone has some suggestions for some good comic books (i am partial to trade paperbacks), I'd love to hear em.

Thanks

My favourite Batman stories are The Killing Joke and A Death in the Family. There is a huge list of Batman recommended reading here. (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?t=35000)

As for other stuff from DC, if you're interested in super heroes I would recommend the JSA series. A lot of that series has been collected in TPB's. It is interesting becuase it makes reference to the Golden Age heroes pretty often and tends not to focus on action or combat as much as many current titles do. Instead there is a great deal of character insight and you can see how team relationships evolve. I like this series because if gives the reader a lot more DCU history than most other titles.

One of my all time favourite series is Neil Gaiman's Sandman. This is definately not a super hero book, but it is so extremely well written. I highly recommend this book to everybody. I think that many folks around here would agree.

Right now my favourite monthly title is Dark Horse's Conan. The first TPB either came out last week or will be out shortly. If you're into heroic fantasy and/or barbarians you will love this book. Busiek is doing a great job adapting Robert E. Howard's orignal stories and Nord's art is awesome. The drawings aren't inked, they are simply just coloured on a computer, but the result is a very "water colourish" style that suits the story perfectly.

I hope this helps :)

I strongly suggest "Hush" volumes 1 and 2 for new Batman readers.

I suggest you get Batman #635 and Detective Comics #801, they're both the start of great new arcs. You don't have to know anything to start Detective, though for Batman just know there was a huge gang war in Gotham and a villain called the Black Mask now controls most of the criminal activity in the city.
