I'm sure that the reason the penalty for purjury is so harsh is to enforce a point: do not FUCK with the American Judicial System! The system depends partially (and largely) on human testimonial, and honestly there needs to be a strong incentive for people not to just take the oath and tell whatever fairy tales suit them.

Why is it that whenever someone is convicted everyone points to the maximum possible sentence and then becomes indignant? It's extremely unusual for anyone to get the maximum on any given crime. And there are huge number of factors that go in to sentencing. I'd save any indignation until she's actually sentenced.

There's the threat of that much time for being an idiot. If you're that bold that you'll lie and say you don't know these people, knowing full well they were huggin' up on you in your own music video that the whole world has seen on numerous occasions, you need to be taught a lesson, or at least get scared a bit. Those perjury charges carried a maximum sentence of 5 years each for a reason, some lies are more dangerous than others. If Li'l Kim had just lied about her age or her weight, that would be pretty typical for a woman and no big deal. But she was an eyewitness to a shoot-out, and lied to keep a couple of the gunmen out of jail. If there had been pre-meditation to the shooting, that would have made her an accesory to attempted murder. Even so, I will be surprised if she gets more than a couple of years in jail, total.

Some are. I think she'll get 5 years at the max. There were other charges she was convicted of as well. I don't see her serving more than 10 years at the most. But 5 years Is pretty much something I can see them giving her.
