Man - I can't believe it's been 5 years since Battle Pope premiered - and now Kirkman is the golden boy of comics. It will kill me to have to re-buy all those original issues to see them in colour, but I just might do it.
What the world really needs Image to do is an Absolute Battle Pope - all the stories in one giant hardcover volume. That would be awesome.

You know, I don't think I've ever READ Battle Pope.
I am totally jazzed about the long long long long long awaited completion/sequel to Avigon, though. I *heart* that GN - very Tim Burton-esque sensibilities. It feels like forever since this was solicited the first time...at least a couple of years....but 100 new pages??
Definitely Of the Good.

I've never read Battle Pope either, but seeing that I'm a certified Kirkmaniac these days, I'm going to be giving this a try.
For those of you who have already read these books, how does Tony Moore's art compare to his Walking Dead days?

Much more cartoony, owing partially to the tone of the book.
I haven't read the books yet, though I did pick them all up in San Diego. Maybe I should get to those soon.

Guys & Gals, Battle Pope is lighthearted fun that pokes fun at most things. Have to admit, I really liked the initial use of greys and no color for the series tho.

I'm fairly certain I gave the original AVIGON a positive review somewhere along the line. . .
Oh, how I love the new search capabilities of this website:

That's the column of September 8, 2000. I can't believe I've been doing this column for so long sometimes. . .

It seems like I'm the king of "It was way better back when...", but Battle Pope is the best Kirkman stuff imo. Invincible is good, Walking Dead is friggin' great (that's all of his stuff I read), but Battle Pope is the tops. There are so many issues that, literally, I had to put down because I was laughing too hard. The Christmas Popetacular is some of the funniest material I've ever seen in any medium. The issues where he sleeps with Mary (yes, that Mary) and God gets jealous and beats him silly? Did my Catholic heart good to read those ones - it was blasphemy at its best.
(And, my old Battle Pope review is my one and only quote published in Previews, so I have to love it! LOL)

If you had, you'd remember it - simple stuff really -- sex addicted Pope battles demons on Earth while trying to protect his annoying roommate, pot-smoking Jesus. Taught me many a valuable lesson and I learned that nobody has pick-up lines on par with His Holiness... :D

You know, yes. I would think that I would remember it.
And I somehow don't think this is up my alley at all. ;) While I think INVINCIBLE is the best thing Kirkman's writing right now (yes, I will read WALKING DEAD at some point soon), he's not a 100% with me in terms of certified hits. There have been a couple of things of his that I've read that just left me....bleah. Bored.
And that should officially get my Pipeline Pass revoked. ;)

I think you are safe. I don't think this is board is actually so much Kirman-Crazy as they are Invincible/Walking Dead crazy. I didn't like Jubilee (sorry Tracie) or Marvel Team Up, and I didn't even bother with his Marvel 2099 stuff. But when one writer has two great (and different) creator owned books, its enough to make me check out anything he writes.
You have got to try Walking Dead. It is stronger then his Invincible writing.

Thanks, dear. It's good to know I won't be cast out into darkness. ;)
And I have every intention of reading Walking Dead. I purchased the first trade because of you guys. I just find myself with a remarkable lack of time these days, what with getting married in 3 weeks.

Well, I don't know. Let me check my list of good excuses for not reading a comic book....*flips through some pages*.....hmmm. Getting Married. Alright. It's on the list. I guess its alright that you don't have enough time.

I was really surprised to see that in the Image solicitations. It's been YEARS since I've read it, but I really really enjoyed AVIGON and have long wondered why I hadn't seen anything else in comics from Che Gilson, the writer. This's really cool, and I'd definately buy it again for 100 new pages! ^_^
