Compliments of Sci-Fi.com:
Whedon Wooed For Wonder
Producer Joel Silver confirmed to SCI FI Wire that he is wooing Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon to write and direct a new film version of Wonder Woman. "I'm trying," Silver said in an interview at WonderCon in San Francisco on Feb. 19. "I'm trying to work a deal with Joss. ... I was just in the other room [where Whedon was talking about his upcoming SF movie, Serenity]. I don't know if I could work that out. It's a complicated deal to do, but I would love him to do it. It would be great if he could do it."
Silver (the Matrix films and the upcoming House of Wax) said that Whedon, an avowed comic fanatic and current author of Marvel's Astonishing X-Men series, came to him with a new twist on the venerable character. "It's just a great, legendary comic-book hero, and it's one that has never been kind of brought back to life after Lynda Carter [who starred in the 1970s Wonder Woman TV series]. I mean, it's a reinvention. ... Tim Burton reinvented Batman after Adam West, and ... [director Richard] Donner reinvented Superman after George Reeves. It's time to do that to Wonder Woman. It's a thing that could be great if it's done great. ... The idea is to try to find a way to make it, and I thought Joss has a great idea, because he understands a kind of female superhero character, and also he's great at what he does. So I'm trying to find the best way to do it. ... We're working our way through it."

Considering Joss has said the only things he's good at writing are families and women with superpowers, I think it could work well.

Isn't it odd that WW is considered one of the "Big Three" yet is largly ignored outside of comics?
I would love to see Joss do it, but then again I'm a Whedon whore so I would love to see Joss do just about anything. :D

I would hope that IS speculation. I dont think I could take either Basinger or Biel as Wonder Woman. Not that I have anything against either I just dont see either as being Wonder Woman. This coming from loving Basinger since 9 1/2 weeks and still think thats she a quality actress by having just watched Cellular. I have said this next sentence for the gazillionith time.I would hope they would go with Monica Bellucci.
Edit: Though I suppose that Basinger could pull off a Hippolyta though.

If they want Basinger, why not get Lynda Carter then? As for Biel, I never liked her look at all. Even in Blade III I wasn't impressed. She's too every day/homely IMHO. Diana is supposed to have the beauty of Aphrodite. I'd much prefer someone like Tsianina Joelson who is gorgeous, young, athletic, and has some experience playing an Amazon. Here's a couple pics of her from Xena.

That looks like a pretty good choice actually. She's hot, but based on the shape of her face she looks like she could kick my ass. I don't know if the shape of a face is a good indication of ass-kicking ability, but her's just screams "I'm tough, back off."

My current pick is Taylor Cole (she'll be on the WB's Summerland again starting this Monday at 9 p.m. EST, and there's a Summerland mini-marathon this Sunday evening as well). The best thing about her is that she's young (like around 20-21 years old, in case sequels were an option, her looks wouldn't fade for another 10 years).

I think the chances of anyone making a good Wonder Woman movie is remote at best. The character is just cheesy and lame and any actress who puts on that ridiculous costume will look stupid like Halle Berry's Catwoman.
Whedon has his work cut out for him but I won't knock him if he fails since I can't think of anyone who could do better. Whedon at least took another concept (Buffy) which was stupid on the surface and made it work so he might be a good fit.

I'm a die-hard WW fan and I have to agree with you. It's the star-spangled shorts that make the outfit look "wrong". If you gave her pants or something that were solid red or gold, it would work. Having the blue and white just clashes with everything else.

THIS MAY ACTUALLY BE ONE OF THE BEST COMICBOOK TO MOVIE FLICKS TO HIT THE THEATERS BECAUSE IF HE CAN WRITE HER LIKE HE'S DONE WRITING THE ASTONISHING XMEN COMIC... WHOA.
Silver Pictures has signed Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, to write and direct the Wonder Woman feature film. The announcement was made Thursday by Jeff Robinov, President of Production, Warner Bros. Pictures.
"We are excited about working with Joss," Robinov said. "He brings great energy and creativity to the process. His work on Buffy makes him uniquely qualified to handle the Wonder Woman character."
"There's no one better than Joss to adapt the legendary Wonder Woman comic book character created in the 1940s into a dynamic feature film for 21st century audiences," producer Joel Silver said. "Wonder Woman was the first great female superhero to emerge from comic books and later inspire millions of fans in her television incarnation, but unlike her counterparts Batman and Superman, this groundbreaking heroine has yet to be reinvented for the feature film arena."
"Wonder Woman is the most iconic female heroine of our time, but in a way, no one has met her yet," Whedon said. "What I love most about icons is finding out what's behind them, exploring the price of their power. When Joel and I began discussing the character, I realized there is a woman behind the legend who is very fascinating, very uncompromising, and in her own way, almost vulnerable. She¹s someone who doesn't belong in this world, and since everyone I know feels that way about themselves, the character clicked for me."
Whedon created and executive produced the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which ran for seven seasons on The WB and UPN, based on his screenplay for the 1992 feature film of the same name. Whedon also created and executive produced the successful Buffy spin-off series Angel, and wrote the screenplays for the films Toy Story and Alien: Resurrection.
He is currently completing post-production on the feature film Serenity, which he wrote and directed based on his television series Firefly. He is also writing Marvel's Astonishing X-Men comic book.

Best way to introduce WW? May I sugest the WW cameo in the Alex Ford superman script. }read it, when she and clark are alone having their picnic at 3:am in stonhenge, Diana can tell clark about her mother and sisters past. The history of the Amazon/s and her so called birth in flash back.
My favorite part. Diana is in Clarks apartment, looking at the photos of Clark's parents with envy.
Diana, "Your parents sent me a wonderful christmas card."
Clark coming into the room with a picnic basket under his arm, "I told them you don;t celebrate christmas. Perhaps you should send them a happy birthday Zeus cars!"
Diana, "I don't think hallmark makes any!"
Then she can get on with her own story and movie.

I think a letter like that coming from an official source like MTV is one of the best things to be done. Why? Because the company involved in making a Wonder Woman movie is Warner Bros. and their track record as of late hasn't been the best. Superman may have rocked, but starting with Superman 3 and Supergirl, there hasn't been a lot of good comic movies to come from that studio. (Tim Burton's first two Batmans aside) Batman 3 and 4 and Catwoman tell viewers that the head of the studio don't know their heads from their bung-holes. I remember that when the new Superman movie was being thought out one of the Execs (Jon Peters) said that no matter what, he wanted Superman to not fly through the air and he had to fight a large spider at the end. WHAT?!?!? Just stupid stuff like that proves that Warners needs a revamping in the higher up offices. My best of luck to Joss.

Eh? Since when has Charisma not had breasts. Did you see her farewell episode on Angel?
Still, I wouldn't mind Rosario Dawson, if she can gain a Grecian accent, in the role.
Rosario Dawson? um, no. unless you want catwoman 2: litter box.

on eight glasses of water and a peez for dinner! She is tall 6 feet, has the build, can act and do many of her own fighting and stunts. beside she looks like Wonder woman.
Which the only thing I hated about Buffy (Sarah-Michelle) that you
could tell that she didn't do much of anything in performing her own stunts.

It's unlikely to happen but I wouldn't mind Laura Michelle Kelly getting the role.

Catherine Zeta Jones, Jennifer Connelly and Monica Belluci would all be perfect for the part but given that WB would want a minimum of three movies, and with three years gap between each they'd simply be too old.

It's fun to watch season 1 and 2 of Buffy and play the "find the Buffy stunt woman" game. The Spike stunt man stood out like a sore thumb from time to time.

No, the new twist is that the Amazons will be open about their lesbianism instead of hinting at it. Thankfully, Whedon's handled that kind of stuff tastefully before so it won't be exploitative.

I know people are going to make professions about the costume being classic and all, but that joint needs some serious reworking for the movie. I apologize to those that love it, but star spangled panties just look plain stupid.
Straight from the horses mouth: In Entertainment Weekly, Whedon promises absolutely no star-spangled panties. Good. Now, I hope they can come up with a design that evokes the classic costume without looking laughable.

Firefly is a great reason to join Netflix. See the series before Serenity hits theatres this summer/fall/whenever! This show was great, and its cancellation is up there with tragedies like Freaks & Geeks, another good reason to get Netflix!

Maybe, he means that he loves the idea of the character, but felt that she wasn't used to her full potential. I'm not too worried, since Joss Whedon seems to have a love affair with strong women. So, I'm a fairly confident that the movie will be okay.
Not watching the TV show is good, because it was only a step up from Batman a lot of the time.
And the comics are rarely 4 star material, so not liking them is fair enough.
(And I like Batman, without really reading his series or watching much of the TV shows, it IS possible)

Whedon will just make his own version of the character.
I hope he uses the Greek mythology and magic from WW. It will make it different to Superman (science-fiction) and Batman (realism), plus it'll give him room to make powerful enemies.

I'd at least hope DC gives him enough background material that he just doesn't take the bare concept "Amazon woman comes to Man's World" and create something that has no resemblance to any previous version. Not every Wonder Woman story told in the past 60 years has been crap.

I'm really hoping that Whedon doesn't go with the simplistic approach to the Amazons that Perez and Potter took. I always found it ridiculous that these women have been hanging out on an island for like 3,000 years, and have made no scientific advances. Previously, they'd made great use of their time, and had made a very modern, even futuristic existence for themselves. Givent that Whedon writes empowered women, it would make sense for him to go along with this perspective. Along with that, I've always considered the Amazons to be the standing army of Olympus, and I'd really like to see them used that way.

Pretty much sums up my thoughts as well.
I'm sure if Whedon wants to do a bit of research, DC will quickly give him access to the WW archives. Despite Whedon not being familiar with WW, I have much faith in him that he'll make a great Wonder Woman movie. I'm confident that any resemblance to the comic book version wont be wiped completely clean come time to shoot this movie.

Well, they DO have some, but necessity is the mother of invention. They're virtually immortal and pretty much their needs are all taken care of. One doesn't generally try to create new technology or scientific breakthroughs unless there's some kind of reason. If nothing else, it underscores a huge difference between our change/progress/money driven society and their sedate immortal one. Even investigation into "pure science" in our world is often driven by the idea that with more "raw material" to work with, it's easier to make life better for ourselves. If they're happy with they way their life is, there's not much reason to get into it much.

I would take a look at the Whedon/Cassaday X-Men. I think Mr. Whedon has respect enough for the comic artform that he wouldn't turn his back comepletly on the WW design.

What's the point of doing WW if you don't use some variation on the classic costume? Of all the comic movies that have come out in the last 7 years or so, the only ones to not really use the costumes were the less iconic ones. The X-Men costumes are far from iconic. Elektra's costume is not iconic. Catwoman rarely gets drawn with the same costume twice. All the rest were the costumes from the comics, sometimes tweaked a bit for better real world action.

He'll probably go with one of the variations or the old red Donna Troy one if he doesn't want to use the iconic one.
Most likely it'll just be tweaked to be less America-centric.

That was the jist of the comments I've seen. He doesn't want the character to look like she's wearing the American Flag, so she probably won't have the "star-spanlged panties." But I would expect her to be wearing some variation of her classic costuming.

The Amazons came from a time, and societies in which there was a great thirst for knowledge. It was a time of scientific discovery, that lasted into the Roman Empire. For their society to have changed in no way, as they had under Perez and Potter, made absolutely no sense. The Amazons are the zenith of feminine achievement - in every way. The Greeks believed that one had to develop one's mind and body equally, and the Amazons of the DCU come directly from that society, and should have carried those ideals forward to their logical conclusion. Since it appears she's not going to fly, having enough tech to build a plane would also make sense, as well as going to the core of the character's mythology.

I could deal with the red Troia one actually.
But even removing the stars might work.
