View Full Version : Wonder Woman #214 Opinions?

I dont normally buy WW, but I picked this title up because of the tie-in with last month's Flash issue, and I have to say it didnt live up to my expectations.
First, the artwork, while not terrible, is certainly not up to the level I am used to in Flash with Porter and sometimes Justantino. The artist clearly is not used to drawing speedsters and it showed in the lack of movement I felt in the panels as opposed to the first part of the story.
The writing was ok, but I was let down at the "resolution", which really wasnt much of one. I understand it is meant to lead into Villains United probably, but since I am not planning on getting that book the ending left me feeling "meh".
The upsides for me was the amount of action, lots of fighting going on. Especially nice to see Zoom take on WW, but not so nice the way she took him out(which should never happen).
Overall, I had to get this to get the rest of the story, but I wasnt that impressed. Its not that it was terrible, but not up to my usual Flash standards, thats all.

I stated a couple of times to see if Wonder Woman can handle the villains
who don't hold back and this is one of them. Even though Diana defeated
Zoom (which you're right, it shouldn't have happened), Zoom took it to her
real good to the point where Diana's blindfold came off, revealing her clouded
eyes (which doesn't look bad, by the way). Cheetah also took it to Flash
with some speed. Since this is leading to Villains United, this issue tells me that the heroes are in trouble in a big way. Diana had better get her eyesight
back or else the villains will strike when the iron's hot.
Don't worry, this is probably Drew Johnson's last issue because, as you know,
Rags Morales jumps on board for maybe 6-issues.
PS: Do you think that Howard Porter should have drawn the crossover
instead?

Yeah, I would have loved for Howard to draw this issue also, it would have been much better, but I fully understand why he didnt. I really dont mean to hate on Drew, hes not a bad artist, its just that you need someone who has experience with Zoom and Flash to really pull off these guys. When you read the first part of the story, in Flash, Zoom has that distortion effect around him, it looks great and is a perfect fit. But in this issue its absent, and it looks worse because it comes directly on the heels of the Porter-drawn issue.

I'll give this issue a B- at best. The crossover was alright.
PS: It's official - Joss Whedon has signed on to write and direct the Wonder
Woman feature film.

That sucks, I really wanted him to do X3! On the other hand, now at least I know that WW will be decent.

Man, that sucks.
Expect lots of valleygirli-sms coming from DIana's mouth, some charisma-vacuum flavor-of-the-month Hollywood Starlet playing WW and a campy-comedy tone...just like an ICONIC superhero like Wonder Woman needs...
Funny how WW will have her own BATMAN AND ROBIN before getting a chance to have her own SUPERMAN,THE MOVIE...

Going into this crossover, I was hoping that both Flash and Wonder Woman
would discuss the Identity Crisis events. Did you notice that Flash didn't
apologize to Wonder Woman about the comment of her not being human?

I don't follow WW, how did she lose her eyesight, and what was the deal with being tested by the other heroes. Has she gotten other super-senses to compensate, or just improved hearing, etc;?

I liked it. The art was lacking, but having Diana as narrator was really welcome. This crossover makes me wish they'd explore/use WW's superspeed a little more.

Aw, no.
Zoom is my favourite new villain of the last few years. One of the most relentless and menacing villains in recent memory. I mean, Wally borrowed the speed of Jay Garrick and Impulse and he still couldn't even touch Zoom.
But Wonder Woman catches him in the lasso and punches him out? WHAT?!?
And what the heck is the deal with this "I am not a villain" crap that he was spouting every second page? Zoom was never that misguided. His goals may have been positive - to make Wally a better hero, and to someday become his friend again - but his methods of achieving those goals were evil. And Zoom knew that. Because he was still a cold, calculating profiler at heart.
Saying "I am not a villain, though I help out other villains and kill cops" is neither cold nor calculating. It is completely daft.
(Oh, and I also wish DC would put Zoom's word balloons in italics again. That made him seem much creepier.)
*sigh* Hunter Zolomon, welcome to VillainsWithWastedPotentialVille. I'm sure you'll get along fine with your neighbours, Darkseid, Prometheus, Bane, Parallax and the Superman Rogues Gallery.

GRADE: C+ It's better than most of the tripe I've read lately, and under the correct vision ( given by the right writer ) this could be a top book.

WoW! That whole opinions may vary thing is so true!
I felt the art in the Flash crossover was very . . . sloppy and well . . . muttled. I am catching up on comics and I just got to that issue but I was wondering if the same artist will be doing the Wonder Woman issue. Guess not. I will have to wait and see if that is a good thing or not.
I cannot wait to Wally and Diana handle Cheetah and Zoom!

Porter didn't draw the first part in Flash. Justiniano did.
But that effect was cool, nonetheless.

Very weird issue this time around.
I thought it was okay, but it just didn't stick with me after I finished reading it.
Kind of a subpar wrapup to the crossover story.

Yeah, somebody answer this person's questions (post #10 above). He wants to know how Dinah lost her eyesight, etc. I'd respond, but I don't follow the book.
Diana was forced to fight Medusa (whose look can turn one to stone) and because of some rigging by Circe, millions of lives were in the balance. Diana went into the fight blindfolded, but Medusa ripped the blindfold off her. Medusa (at least in the DCU) apparently has the ability to compel people to look at her. Diana struggled to keep her eyes closed but knew she was going to lose the fight and millions would die. As a desperate move, she grapped one of Medusa's snakeheads (which Diana had already chopped off) and squirted the venom directly into her eyes, blinding her and thereby freeing her from the struggle to look away. She chopped Medusa's head off.
The JLA (Batman specifically) asked to test her to see if she still had what it takes to be a member of the JLA. Apparently, she passed.
She doesn't have super-senses, per se - at least not in the same sense that Superman does, but her senses are somewhat advanced and she was blessed by the gods with a multitude of abilities that allow her to compensate for her lost sight. One of her blessings was from Artemis, who gave her the "eye of the hunter." Taken broadly, this could mean not only that all of Diana's senses are enhanced, but that she is practically unerring in her aims no matter what. In other words, she can't miss.

Thanks.
I just started getting into the DC swing of things a bit more....does WW take place after the current JLA storyline?
(I started getting the CSA arc, but only have 109 right now, which doesn't actually feature wonder woman)

yeah it prolly takes place before...depending if WW gets her sight back anytime soon it may be after the current WW

Anyone wanna tell my why Zoom hasn't visited his now fully-recovered wife Ashley Zolomon? Y'know former love of his life, reason for being, that kinda thang. And why's he swapping spit with the friggin' Cheetah of all people?
How is this making Wally a better hero?

And why's he swapping spit with the friggin' Cheetah of all people?Actually, that's one of the few "right" things that's been done with Zoom recently.
There's no way Zoom will willingly visit a conscious Ashley. Because deep down, Zoom is still Hunter Zolomon. And Hunter Zolomon is too ashamed of his failures to ever face his ex-wife. (It's not like he had the balls to talk to her before he became Zoom either, y'know?)
Great little character touch. Just another reason why Zoom is such a freakin' cool villain.

Hi! I'm new to this board so please bear with me if I bungle things up a bit. :)
I've read the issue and I was just wondering why Cheetah's left hand is human, whereas her whole body seems to be all furry and spotty as her namesake. I went back and reread Flash 219 and this issue, and I can't seem to find an explanation for this.
Could a kind soul in here shed some info on this? Thanks. :)
