Re: Permanent Damage - March 16, 2005.
That last little section, entitled A Schematic Of The End Times, that was a spoof, right?
Please tell me that was a spoof.
I'm having trouble sleeping while under the impression that there are 68 post-human infants crawling around the globe...

I wrote a story a while ago, still farming it to publishers, set against the background of an Earth conquered by aliens. The hows and whys of the conquest weren't important to the plot of the story, but I did kind of half-explain it by giving the aliens two thumbs on each hand.

What about the babies' tongues?
Did they have teeth on their tongues? They sure sound like Aliens to me.

Every item in the Schematics sections so far have been fictitious.
Except one.
But I'm not saying which one.

Well... obviously in your family...
(Sorry, couldn't restrain myself. You can't stick a loaded gun in my hand with the safety off and the hammer cocked and expect me not to pull the trigger...)

I'd thought so, but I didn't want to be the one to ask.
Will we ever learn the real one?
(the thumb one I wasn't sure about at first, but the clone brain computer one was obvious. Unless that's the real one. In which case I'm gonna admit my time has been and past, which is hard to admit when your 22).

Sigh. Some day, when I have a couple of hours, I'll try to figure it out.

I did cop to it once somewhere or other -- Millarworld, maybe -- so if you Google cleverly enough you might be able to find the answer.
If you need a hint, it's one of the sillier sounding ones...

Yeah, that makes sense.
The switchboard operator at UC Davis was pretty adamant she'd never heard of a researcher named David Maccabee.

not clone brain computers, please not that.
Theoritcally maybe we could do it, but there surely haven't been enough clone tests done yet.
No, fuck it, no way is that possible yet.

I was hoping it was the animal island one, but I googled the guys name and the only one matching it was Permanent Damage.
And if it's the Thailand one, then Ancestor Products doesn't have a website.
Then again, I'm as good at net surfing as I am at actual surfing - I have done it, but everytime I stand I fall.

I don't remember clone brain computers, but if you're referring to transferring human minds to a computer, or even to another brain, that runs into MAJOR problems with the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle.

The hard part wasn't confirming or denying; the hard part was going through the archives, and FINDING them all, but I ran with it anyway, hoping I wouldn't make any clerical errors. It only took about 20 minutes.

I actually signed to Millarworld to use their search program....
I couldn't get it to bring up more than 5 posts or topics Steven had posted on.

I did it the old fashioned way; I went to Steven's old columns, and looked up every one.

Tried that.
Has there been more than 2 end of times?
(I've only read this current one, and the one with the animals being trained to use weapons)
but I may have missed a column here or there.

Well, there was one which was specifically mentioned in the archive summaries; I assume that was the first one. However, what I did was go backwards from the current column until I found it.

I tried Google (not site specific, though), and I guess I must have used the wrong term; I only got two of them, which is why I went in manually.
