What are the classic metal albums?

And I mean stone cold classics, not your personal favorites, or the one that was released last year (or five years ago) that got good reviews, or the most obscure-but-influential band of the 90s, I mean classics. As in, any metalhead who doesn't own/love these albums is no metalhead at all. And the late '80s is pushing it, timewise. (It's my opinion that it takes at least twenty years for the classics to be sorted from the merely great.)

Oh, and when I say metal, I don't mean hard rock. I already love Led Zeppelin like a brother. I mean metal.

What's Sabbath's best album? Priest's? Maiden's? Metallica's? Mötorhead's?

What do I need to listen to in order to love metal? (Remember, I like old music. I like weird music. I like pop music. But I don't--yet--love metal.)

What d'ya got?

A few obvious ones off the top of my head:

Judas Priest: British Steel

Black Sabbath: Paranoid

Motörhead: Ace of Spades

Metallica - Ride the Lightning

Metallica - Master of Puppets

Megadeth - Rust in Peace

Iron Maiden - Powerslave

I agree with these choices, although I might sub Piece of Mind for the classic Maiden album. I never really got into Motorhead.

I cast my Black Sabbath vote for Volume IV. But really, all their Ozzy-era albums are classics. Sabotage is my other personal favourite.

I'm not sure if you consider bands like Deep Purple and Uriah Heep to be metal or not. They were categorised as such back in their early-70's heyday, but in comparison to the later, more Sabbath-influenced sound that metal evolved into, I think they're really more like hard rock.

Well, he does want the classic Judas Priest albums.

Reminds me of the file card I saw for the Judas Priest section at the Vinyl Exchange.

"Rob Halford might have been the least gay thing about Judas Priest."

Deep Purple - In Rock.

Led Zeppelin 1.

And yes, I do consider them to be metal.

These've been said, but I'll second and third some of them:

Judas Priest - British Steel, yep. Stained Class would also qualify as a classic in my book.

Black Sabbath - Paranoid. But really, don't stop there. Half of Sabbath's catalog is classic.

Motörhead - Ace of Spades, no question.

Metallica - Ride the Lightning edges out Master of Puppets for best album. Both are essentials.

Megadeth - Rust in Peace. Not their best album, but their first good album, in my opinion.

Iron Maiden - Huge Maiden fan here (heck, I even liked the Blaze Bayley stuff). It's a close call between Piece of Mind and Powerslave, but I'd say Piece of Mind. Also Live After Death is one of the very few live albums (by anybody, not just Maiden) worth listening to.

Ozzy - Blizzard of Oz, oh yes.

Others that come to mind (though none are quite 20 years old yet):

Pantera - Cowboys From Hell

Queensr˙che - Operation: Mindcrime

Testament - The Legacy

Slayer - Reign in Blood (Reign is the classic, but personally I prefer South of Heaven)

Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys Pt 1 and 2.

Savatage - Hall of the Mountain King

King Diamond - Abigail

I'd say Deep Purple is pretty metal, more so than Zeppelin. I haven't heard much Uriah Heep. But whatever.

How about Blue Oyster Cult? I have their first record, and it's pretty damn metal for 1972. What's their best?

SECRET TREATIES and AGENTS OF FORTUNE are both pretty good. Much as I like BOC, though, they just aren't in the same class as Sabbath, Metallica, Priest, etc.

What's their best?I love BÖC, but I don't think it's really fair to lump them into the heavy metal category, even though they had some heavy metal songs. I mean, nobody would mistake "I Love the Night" or "Don't Turn Your Back" for metal.

Whatever the case though, check out Fire of Unknown Origin and Agents of Fortune.

My favourite Blue Oyster Cult album is Spectres, the follow-up to better-known (and great) Agents of Fortune. It doesn't get good reviews, for some reason, but I love this album. The best-known, and IMO the weakest, track is "Godzilla" (still a decent song, and probably the heaviest on the album). My favourites are "Nosferatu" (yes, the lyrics seem to be about the FW Murnau movie), "I Love the Night", the, er, "Golden Age of Leather" (no jokes, please; after all, this is a band that named an entire album "Dominance and Submission") and - well, too many to mention, really. Great, great album, full of beautiful melodies, smooth vocal harmonies and "Don't Fear the Reaper"-style guitar picking.

I have to add one (maybe two) albums: although Queen weren't considered metal for most of their career, that's how they were publicised early, and I think that the first two albums, Queen I and Queen II, are two of the best metal albums ever made.
