im trying to get my girlfriend into comic books. shes read she-hulk, cable & deapool and watchmen. she thought she-hulk and cable & deadpool were "just ok" but she said she would read watchmen over and over. what has alan moore done for marvel comics? and since im on the subject, what non-marvel stuff has he done that is good?

As far as I know, he's only done a Captain Britain miniseries a few decades ago. Apparently, he doesn't like Marvel much.

I know he's worked on Spawn comics and freaking Youngblood, but barely any Marvel characters. It's gotta be for personal reasons.

You might wanna check out the issues of Supreme that he did for Image, those were good. Also, Sage of the Swamp Thing is a classic, and should be easy to find in trade.

Not much at Marvel. There's a compilation of DC stories of his, though. "The DC Universe stories of Alan Moore" or something like that. There's From Hell, gruesome but good. The various ABC titles - Top 10, Tom Strong, Promethea, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Get her The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Supreme: The Story of The Year, and Y: The Last Man. She might also like Powers and Superman: Secret Identity.

Get her V For Vendetta. If she liked Watchmen there's a really good chance she'll like this, too.

He did quite a bit for Marvel UK in the 70s/early 80s, working on Captain Britain and some Night Raven stories, but not all of those saw a proper printing in the USA.

Well, if the guy wants Alan Moore, I think we should make it clear that Y, Powers and Secret Identity weren't by Moore...

LoEG, V for Vendetta, From Hell, The Killing Joke, Promethea and Top 10 are the Moore picks I'd go for.

He also did a lot of Marvel UK published Dr. Who stuff in the late 70s early 80s.

The almost universal thing I use to hook just about anyone is Top Ten. It's good, plain fun with a lot of background jokes that anyone who's so much as seen superhero movies should be able to appreciate, if not get.

Yeah, Moore's Supreme stuff is very Watchmen-esque, so are his Wildc.a.t.s. issues to a lesser extent. Tao is like a younger more selfish version of Adrian. Also, if Miracle Man ever comes out in trades, she should probably read that too. V for Vendetta isn't similiar to Watchmen concept-wise, but, like Watchmen, it is very heavy; its awesome-A lot of work but well worth they payoff.

Anything from his ABC imprint really.

Also a few years ago he did a project for Image known as 1963 (I think) were he deliberately aped Stan Lee's soapbox persona. That's the closest thing really.

Maybe this is all bullsnot, but i always heard he didn't get on with Marvel because they kicked up such a fuss about his work on Marvelman; they wouldn't let it be published under that name in the US (hence Miracleman... a name i actually prefer). Moore felt they were being unreasonable and using their big bucks to stunt the success of a worthy comic, which is probably true to an extent. At least, Miracleman is worthy; it's one of the greatest superhero stories i've ever read, and i can't wait for it to get collected and published again.

Last i heard, Joe Queseda had smoothed things out with Moore and there were no longer any hard feelings, but he still hasn't done any Marvel work, though i'd also heard on these boards that Marvel had acquired some kind of right to publish Miracleman... so i don't know, watch that space, i guess.

I'll be happy if i can just go out and buy a nice, new Miracleman trade.

As far as Moore works worth reading? From Hell would be my main pick (it's gloomy but truly unmissable; serious contender for greatest comic ever written, imo), followed by The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. When you get to know his writing a bit more and are comfortable with his style, check out Promethea.

And if you've ever loved superheroes, you should already have read Tom Strong. Reading it is like being five years old again. :D

SAGA OF THE SWAMP THING VOLS. 1-8 (DC)

Some of the best comic/horror writing I have ever read...if not THE best. It's not the typical superhero fare so she might be more open to these stories.
