Over on the X-Books board after I asked if Doom and the X-Men ever fought somebody mentioned that he and Excalibur fought over Limbo which Doom wanted because of the Promethium. I've looked but I can't find any info on what it is. Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance.

I think that was its only mention in the Marvel Universe.

Apparently it's a magical metal that sustains the existence of Limbo. Doom wanted to use it as an inexhaustable power source.

I'm surprised it was mentioned at all. I would have figured DC would have trademarked "Promethium" since it's one of THEIR "magic metals".

Yes, mate, that is exactly what it is. Sorry, I meant to answer your post on the X-Board.

This, Excalibur's first dabble with Limbo, has largely been ignored with more recent stories featuring the realm.

Shame really. It was a fair conclusion - Darkoth siezes the Soul Sword and seals up limbo for good.

Then boom, 30 odd issues later the Soul Sword pops up again, never actually explaining how it got there or why.

Shame. Very contrived. but the later part of Excalibur's run was like that. I t was never really an X-Book, far too many other ties to the Marvel Universe as a whole. Later efforts to make it into a "European X-Men" merely resulted in some very bad continuity.

Back to the point in question it may well be exactly DC's trademarking that ensured it was never referred to again.

Was it ever said how strong it was?

Not that I'm aware of. Doom only referred to it in the context of an energy source.
