Has anybody read Josh Howard's first series of DEAD@17??
Damn was it good!!! And it was so simple, but thrilling for some reason...
Howard has this really cool art style where if Mike Mignola, Michael Avon Oeming, and Bruce Timm had a baby (somehow...) you would get this insane cartoon style...
I love these all in one Writer/Artists guys...they seem to put a lot of hardwork in to their stuff (me being one) and I think it should be acknowledged...
Cant wait for my next visit to my local comic book store so I can pick up the DEAD@17: Blood of Saints TPB!!!
Just ordered the first two trades today.

 OH MY GOD............................................... .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ...........................................
you're the president............................
unreal...............................
AWESOME!!!!!!! so how's that workin out for ya? :D
My mom's maiden name is Garza... maybe were related!!! maybe not ....heh...
Hey listen Jessie, im somewhat of a independant comic artist myself....Its safe to say that i draw a lot...(on napkins, tickets, anything paper!)
I literally fall asleep on my desk drawing until i wake up and go to school
Im only 17 but i've been drawing comics since i could write....And i literally have stacks of comics in my room...
I counted em once...around 500 pages of stuff...
But recently my work is looking good, and ive seem to master the art of inking...
I havent been into Photoshop yet but i heard it works dreams for your comics, especially when it comes to coloring....
My art style........um....think a mixture of Robert Crumb and Michael Avon Oeming....
My grades arent what you call.....good...hehe.....I'll never make it in life with my kind of grades...yeah, so drawing comics is my only resort and besides I love doing it anyway...
I've been making portfolios for when i graduate so i could show some independant publishers or maybe some sequential art schools...
My friends say im the best artist in the school and im at the top of my art class.....(gosh....im trying not to gloat :D sorry... )
I'd show you some of my stuff but I dont have a scanner.... :(
My stories arent half bad either i've been workin on some scripts lately....mainly just writing scenes and deep plots...
I get a lot of my inspiration from independant writers but some mainstream Marvel and DC writers have an effect on me...(Brian M. Bendis, Alan Moore, Warren Ellis <TRANSMET equals greatest!!! his UFF run is great too...)
I work hard and i dont give up....I stay up all hours of the night working on my comics, making sure the detail is accurate, getting that right moment to draw an' awesome full pager panel, slapping in dialogue thats irrelevant to the main plot but still captivates you by its flavorful content, and just plain sweating blood over doing your covers.....
Im very serious about my work and im completely dedicated...
Independent comics are my life...
By the way, My name is John Zylstra i live in Chicago, IL.....
I know you might be busy but do you have any advice on how i can get my work published??
and I hope im not asking too much....but........um............................. .............................in all seriousness..............do you wanna see my work?

Thanks for the kind words. Glad you enjoyed the book! I just finished Revolution #4, so it should be out in a few weeks.
We'll be in Chicago for Wizard World in August. Bring your portfolio - I'm sure the guys from Viper would be glad to look over your stuff.

Sockburger,
I second what Josh is saying, put together your portfolio and carry it to Wizard World Chicago and show it off to get a good critique. Viper Comics is run by some exceptionally nice, professional comic book pros and every book they choose or everything that they work on has a real charm to it. That said, they’ll give you a honest, fair review.
As one of the writers on Viper Comics' DEAD@17: Rough Cut #1 and an editor for one of Viper's rivals, Arcana Studio, let me play bad cop for a moment and offer this on portfolio reviews - go into any of them ready to get an honest, sometimes critical critique where the editor is going to point out some of your art's flaws as well as your strengths. They (we) are not doing this to cut you down, it's just a series of suggestions aimed at strengthening your final product to resemble what each company thinks they can sell.
Also, (and this is more for people that might be reading this as opposed to you specifically, Sockburger. I’m sure you’re aware of this) as a submissions editor I’d recommend trying to have your work on 11 x 17 art boards, the draw area on the page is 10 x 15. In addition, 75% or more of your portfolio should be sequentials with the rest only being pinups of cover quality. Finally, think quality over quantity – I (or any editor) needs to see your latest, best work… not everything that has been drawn. So bring your best!
Oh, and don't be afraid to walk your art around to all of the small press publishers that Chicago attracts such as Arcana! ;) ;) ;) We (Arcana Studio, Devil’s Due, IDW, etc.) hate it when Jessie, Josh, Jim, and Greg beat us to the good stuff!!!! ;)
