John Cassaday's cover of Kitty Pride and Colossus from ASTONISHING X-MEN #6 won Marvel's Cover of the Year contest. I know you've all seen the cover, but click here (http://marvel.com/coty/) to check it out. Here's the blurb Marvel has posted at the contests end:

Voting is over, and John Cassaday's Astonishing X-Men #6 is the winner! Keep watching this space for more information about the upcoming Wizard Magazine Postermania, and thanks to everyone — the creators, the staff of Wizard Magazine and of course you, the fans — for your votes!

What can I say. . .it is a great cover--not the one I would have picked as best of last year, but it is a good one. Still, I mist admit that I'm a bit disappointed in how Marvel ran the contest. It was cool seeing the brackets posted as the voting progressed, but I would have liked to have seen some kind of running tally that showed how many votes each cover garnered. It's also kind of vague about how the votes were weighted. The voting was done among creators and fans alike, so did my vote through an online poll count for just as much as, say, Bendis' input did? I'm guessing not. But Marvel not giving any indication of how the votes were scored gives me the impression that the COTY may have been pre-selected, in which case the victory of Cassaday's cover was a foregone conclusion.

In the end, I know it doesn't really matter much. I enjoyed going back through all the covers from last year, being reminded of the good, the bad, and the ugly. The contest was a really cool thing for Marvel to do. And that's the important thing, the way I see it.

So what do you guys think? Know of a cover from last year that you feel is more deserving?

I think the NA #1 or the Joe Quesade Variant of that should have one.

I don't really like the one that won.

To me, #2, #4, and #6, all told a story with one image each. I thought they were amazing stuff, so I'm glad something from Astonishing made it.

Plus Kitty's just hot in that cover. :D

I would've gone with one of Maleev's DAREDEVIL covers, myself.

I particularly liked #68.Those were particularly good. I think the Daredevil covers were the only ones I voted for that I hadn't read.

I should read Daredevil. It's in trades, right?

Maleev's were among my favorites as well. The cover to #66 might be my favorite Daredevil cover ever.

Yep. Bendis' and Maleev's run is faithfully collected in TPB. And you're right: you should check it out.

Cassady's just an amazing artist in general, and an amazing COVER artist in particular. The man just knows how to tell a story! His covers for Captain America were awesome as well.

Should have been Astonishing X-Men #2, Dardevil #68 or 1602 #6.

Crappy democratic process...

Does the cover for 1602 #3 count as being from last year? That cover caught my eye every time I was in my comic shop.

Most of 1602 was 2003, I believe.

I'm happy this cover won. It was one of my favorites of the year.

Honestly, I think that Astonishing cover was head and shoulders above everything else last year.

I remember making a comment on the X-Boards that it should be cover of the year -- and that was before I even knew they'd have such a contest.

Cool. Two points for me. ;)
