View Full Version : There should be a Constantine book

Given the popularity of John Constantine, I believe there should be a Constantine book, different from Hellblazer in that it's not meant for adults only, and is set more firmly in the DC Universe (allowing for guest appearances). This would also enable Constantine to appear in other books, as younger audiences introduced to him in those books could read stories about him that aren't only for mature audiences.
The book would allow teenagers to read stories of one of the best characters in comics without the prison rape, or S&M bars (ie- nothing more extreme than say episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer which got away with a lot.) I'm sure a capable creative team could tell good stories here.
I'm fairly certain that the book would sell, and it's one way to cash in on the PG-13 movie.
No offense, mate, but if you nerf John, you're not getting John. One of the reasons why he's such a good character is that he can deal with extreme stuff like that, be the biggest bastard you know, and still try to do the right thing. Stuff like 'Good Intentions' wouldn't have had as intense an impact if John was dealing with say... giving alcohol to minours.

Kinda like how James Bond's lost popularity after being watered down over the years.
Just not the same.

Yeah, sorry man but definitely not a good idea. John Constantine is simply an R-rated character, no ways around it.

Isn't the movie R-rated anyway?

It is, but I hear that it's a weak 'R' and about as far on the side of PG 13 as you can get before turning 'R'.

If they really wanted to do this - and I don't think they SHOULD - but if they HAVE to - they should put out a comic based on the movie. It should be set in its OWN universe, not the DCU. About an American, LA-based, sexless, non-smoking and rather Catholic John Constantine and his teenage sidekick Chaz.
I wouldn't read it, but who knows? It might find a market.

I don't think Gaiman would allow himself to write such a book.
I think he has more respect for the character than that.

I've got an idea.
Take the movie Constantine.
Make it more or less pg-13 level stories.
Team him up with the Halle version of Catwoman.
Let Chuck Austin write it.
Let Rob Liefeld draw it.
If you combine that much catastrophy in one comic, I guarantee people will buy it just to see how horrible it actually is.

Constantine was in the the first Books of Magic series written by Gaiman about Tim. That book was pretty tame.

I'd buy that and then wash my eyeballs afterwards.

Last time I checked, Hellblazer is in continuity already, and having two John Constantine's in the DC universe would be absolutely horrible.
I'd rather pretend the whole movie thing never happened.
