Question about this group.
I've heard what I guess is their latest (only?) single. I've seen them on Las Vegas and I've seen a commercial for a concert that will be televised sometime soon. From the little I've heard or seen of this group (cult?), I've wondered if the lead singer is the frontman of Tripping Daisies? They sound exactly the same.
Anyone know?

Who said anything about a band? We meant a creepy cult that goes around singing.

Ohhh, that makes sense.
Because for a minute there, i thought we were assuming they were a serious musical act.

The Spree are a very good band... and I don't say that just beacuase I know the trombome player. Yes, the leader was the singer from Tripping Daisy. It was a drummer who was stopped for the microphone, which was a custom deal that looks like a pipebomb (the story in PDF, includes a picture of the mic (http://www.thepolyphonicspree.com/press/dallas_news_copperphone.PDF)). I don't think he went to jail, the FBI came to his house, he showed a clip of a show that demonstrated the mic, they investigated a bit more to make sure it really was a mic but I think he was merely detained at his house.
They are a serious band, the outfits are a bit gimmicky but they are basically a chorus after all, choruses wear robes. The goal was to be more of a travelling performance group like Stomp or The Blue Man Group that can stay in a city for a few days instead of a road band.
They have a good mediaplayer at their website that lets you see the video for "Light and Day" and a couple songs from the new album.

I recommend 'The Beginning Stages of' over 'Together We're Heavy' but both are good and usually priced very well.

I read a tour diary by the band once where, I think it was the lead singer, explained how most magazines and media coverage ask them to wear their more colourful robes and to stand around in ritual, cult-like poses for pictures. They want to be taken as a serious band, but the media pick up on the gimmicky aspects and play them up as much as possible. Or so the singer said.

A percussionist whose class I took at last year's summer arts festival said that he can't bring his collection of small percussion instruments on planes because he basically has to prove to security guards at every step that each and every one is a musical instrument and not a weapon.

I dunno. I've flown around the country and heck, around the world with bands and have never had a problem.

I saw them open for Bowie, and they suck hard. Okay, I get it. You're happy. Write a second song.
