View Full Version : Never Ending Forum ROLL CALL!!!

ScottDMSimmons

I thought it might be a good idea to do a sort of CBI-type roll call for the Never Ending Forum. There are so many good artists and writers here, I thought maybe this could be a potential first stop for anyone interested in knowing exactly who is here.

Basically, give your name and screen name, where you live, your art or writing skills, some stuff you are doing or have done, and then naturally, a link to your website, portfolio webpage, or a CBR thread of your work.

I've been doing comics regularly since 2002. I started with my diary comic "The Little Things." It started as a daily square Illustrator based comic which lasted for a month. I burned out on that and stopped creating comics for 6 months. I then restarted with a horizontal hand-drawn comic.

In 2003, I created my first graphic novel, "the stereos: battle of the bands," which is about a geek, a goth, a slacker and a punk who have a rock band together. It debuted at APE 2004.

In 2004, I slowed the pace of doing "The Little Things" to biweekly to work on the follow-up to the "the stereos: bob," the prequel titled "the stereos: in the garage." The book will debut at this year's APE. During this time, I also switched to creating my comics totally digitally with a Wacom, PhotoShop, and Illustrator.

I'm currently working on my next graphic novel. It is untitled at this time. It is a romance book, roughly 100 pages, and will be digest size. I'm currently researching ideas and sketching pages. I hope to have it ready by next year's APE.

My civilian name is Benoît Leblanc from Sherbrooke, Canada.

I'm a scientist by trade, but it's when I draw that I'm truly happy.

I did the usual freelance jobs like fliers and local newspaper ads. None of it paid well, although I did make money when I illustrated the catalog of the now-defunct Geneka Biotechnology Inc. company in 1998 and 2000.

I have a series of science cartoons (http://www.biolinks.com/humor) that were initially just scotched to the laboratory door. I'm currently working on a space opera that has been mentionned here (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?t=20395) at CBR, and I may one day resume work on my stalled Barrington ( http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?t=31184) story. I hope to publish that stuff one day in one form or the other, but I suspect it may just end up on a website!

I'm really impressed by a lot of what I've seen here on the NEB forum.

Cheers!

Stuff I'm doing: Well I mostly work on sci-fi, mystery, and spy and I currently have several stories all up in the air that I really should work on more. I'm still waiting to hear back on one mystery story I sent off and am fixing to try to send a sci-fi story to a different magazine. I hope they're good enough but I doubt it, I don't think my writing is that great.

I've got a couple things here on this board, and the ones that aren't finished I really do plan on finishing:

My real name IS my screen name. I write for a young people's magazine called WITH. I also teach cartooning and drawing for middle-school (or junior high, depending on what you call it where you are) students at a couple of different schools. The course was something I created at this art studio (http://www.cityofseattle.net/parks/Arts/alkiart.htm) and I'm still on staff there. The class from Madison Middle School had a table at the Emerald City Con last month, in fact; that was a lot of fun. Photos here. (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?t=42349) For those of you in and around Seattle, we're also going to have a table with students autographing stuff and doing sketches at the AfterSchool Arts Showcase at Seattle Center on May 14th... come by and say hello and get a student zine signed.

I also freelance as a writer and illustrator. Most recently -- a prose column on how Christians who protest TV shows and movies are wasting church time and resources, for a religious magazine, and a series of environmental-safety cartoons for ECOSS, (http://www.ecoss.org/) an environmental outfit that's trying to put together a bilingual instructional manual in comics form.

I don't post things here that often lately -- too much paying work, which is actually a GOOD thing, I'm not complaining -- but it does leave me less time to fiddle with the pet projects. Every so often I put up bits of a book about my teaching experiences, "The Schoolteacher Diaries," and I always put up my entry for the San Diego souvenir book. I got a couple of the kids from the same Madison class you see in the linked photos to do entries this year, too, and I'm hoping to get them scanned later today.

I've been writing since I was a wee lad in grade school. However, lately (as in several years) I've been finding it hard to complete anything I start. Most of the time my mind is filled with many ideas and I love puzzling plots and characters together, yet I have much trouble getting them down and detailed the way they should be. I currently have several unfinished projects in the works, including a few comic book ones.

I used to draw a lot a LONG long time ago but not so much anymore. And when I do recently, they look terrible and not as good as my past stuff.

Ive been drawing since I was about 8 ish.
I used to be alright, I could draw a character from a comic no prob, if I could look at it while I did.
My artistic skills peaked when I went to college when i was 17. I dropped out after 3 semesters, and started partying lots and getting high, totally neglecting my drawing.
So my skills went to hell, then I cleaned up, set myself on a straight path once again, and for the last few months have been tryin to get my drawing back up to par. For now I've just been drawing a character out of a comic that I like, and mainly sketching out basic body shapes and trying to familiarize myself with the muscle systems and how muslces should look when certain limbs are being bent to certain degrees from certain angles, etc...trying to get comfortable and sufficiant at drawing a figure without much reference and make it look anatomically/proportionally correct.
I know if I work at it ahrd enough I'll get good...I've drawn really goo stuff before in my life so I KNOW I am capable of it again.
Its been really frustrating lately, still having that undecidedness of where to start are drawing, what to draw, how to make it look right...I still havent figured out any kind of "game plan", so to speak, for what I should be working on specifically and how much to work on it to get my skills up, etc. You know what Im sayin I'm sure.
I don't have any pics online I can show ya'z. I dont even have my own computer, let alone a scanner to scan my drawings in with.
Anyways, when my skills are once again at a level I can comfortably call par, I'll find a way to scan some stuff in and show ya what I'm in to.

I have been drawing a long time and have always wanted to draw comics. Well, Not always, I did want to be a space alien for awhile but my grand mother convinced me that was not at all possible. I have drawn numerous pin ups for small press companies that have never seen print, done story boards for commercials that have never been done, done brochure and logo work that may have actually been prinited, and about to finish a full length comic for a small press company called Mainstay Studios.

I also have not bought a comic book in five years. I do love them but needed a break to become my own artist. I also enjoy long walks on the beach, warm biscuits, and the smell of freshly laundered clothes.

My future goals are to finish my 3 issue run, get job in the comic industry, and, don't tell my grand mother, become a space alien. Oh yeah, and grow as an artist. :D

Hi Jesus!

I was wondering what happened to you! It's great to have you back!

Shannon and I are talking more about the wedding in 2006, and I am having fun teaching at the Art Institute. I am currently teaching Adobe Illustrator, and giving fun projects to help the students learn that hopefully they would also like to put in their portfolio.

The forum that used to be called "Open Your Mouth" is now just "J Torres" (in the hosted forums section). J doesn't do the column anymore, and he's real busy with Teen Titans Go! Hi Hi Puffy Amiyumi, Love as a Foreign Language, something on Batman, and more. Last I heard, he has four forums on the internet. And there are hopes that CBI 3 will still happen this year (remember, last year it started in May).

I'm a doodler. I draw to amuse myself, and hopefully, to make my friends happy. I also like the fact that if I have a dumb visual idea, I'm usually able to allow others to share it... whether they want to or not.

I mostly draw character sketches for role-playing games, but I'll occasionally throw off a random picture or silly cartoon here and there. For awhile there, I was working on my own Tarot deck. Got 65 of the 72 cards done and hit a wall.
Unfortunately, since then, every time I try and get the last seven cards done, I look at some of the other pics and can't resist tweaking them. Gah!

I have a thread here, called 'Munky Doodles', and had a friend set up a Deviantart site for me so I could link to them, rather than posting them as attatchments, but being the technophobic luddite I am, didn't realize that hotlinking was 'bad', apparently. Gr.

Works published:

Poems in a college anthology

A "Van Helsing" fanfic for the movie website. Well, actually this one they didn't publish on the site, but I placed in the top ten finalists for their contest, nationwide, so that's pretty darned good, considering. Unless it got deleted in the last purge, the story's here on the NEF somewhere...

EDIT: Oh, and I forgot these:

In college, I served as an Editorial Cartoonist for a year or so, for the college newspaper. I also wrote several articles for them (both News and Feature), and I had one feature article published in the nearest city's newspaper... a story on local Foster Care.

I've also had poems published twice on Neopets (one of approx. 8 winners during a week; not bad for a site with 7+ million users), and have won 2nd and 3rd place, respectively, in one of their picture competitions... as well as getting one cartoon published in their weekly newsletter.

Working on:

1. The only thing currently that's professional is some packaging art I'm doing for a nutritional food company that's nearing it's launch-stage. When it goes, it'll go big, but currently this job is a volunteer-thing (no pay). Renumeration comes later, once it gets off the ground. We're in the 3rd year of business prep, so we're getting close. (Most businesses like this take 4-5 years to launch.)

2. Simply improving my skills. It took me around 40 years to figure out I wanted to be an artist more than anything else (duh, dumb me), so I'm a bit behind on things. I'm catching up pretty quickly, though.

Goals:

Featuring my art for sale via in a joint venture with my husband, through his photography site sales (and possibly other venues, including book illustrations and/or covers), and also eventually owning a physical gallery for our combined works.

Basically, I'm not much help at the moment as to having industry contacts of any kind (for any industry)... but if you want a critique of your work from a different set of eyes, I'm happy to help out, time permitting (I *do* have a 4-yr-old to chase around as well....) :)

PS---I'm looking for another website to post my art... I started with photobucket, but found that it kept resizing my images, even though the file size was under their limit. I may try deviantart, or another site. Still checking.

Get a Photobucket account. It's free, and it's damn near idiot-proof.

I wish I'd known that before I spent all that time scanning and submitting. grr.
