I have the first 5 issues then dropped it. The lame Ghost Rider impersonater w/ bandages and something about a chessboard played by two demons killed my interest.

I read that Warren Ellis eventually wrote the series. Can someone please give me a short synopsis of his storylines? Thank you.

You're serious?

After Ellis took over, it became pure genius. It defies simplistic, brief description.

But sure -

basically Hellstorm takes over Hell.

Later, things get worse.

the end.

The series became very dark with Leonardo Manco taking over the art chores .

A very, very dark series. Well worth picking up. It was a shame that it was cancelled after Ellis got up to speed on it. If you can find the rest of the run, get it.

I started buying this with issue 1 because I was a fan of the old, cheesy Son of Satan series. I liked Mike Bair's art...and I loved Satana.

Unfortunately, Satana only appeared in one or two panels of the entire series. Bummer.

It would have been interesting to see where the original storyline was going. Although Warren's run is indeed very well written...it probably wasn't the most reader friendly of series. I used to feel like I sinned after reading Ellis's Hellstorm.

Only significant things that happened were Patsy dying and Hellstorm taking over for his dear old dad. He hooked up with some biotch also...don't remember much else. After this, the same creative team did a few issues of Druid before it got axed. In the last issue, Hellstorm kills Dr. Druid. No big loss, there.

He didn't just kill Dr. Druid - he also burned his body and put the ashes in a garbage can.

And hopefully we can all forget the awful Hellcat series that tried to retcon the entire Hellstorm series into meaningless gibberish.

Luckily, the latest Marvel Knights encyclopedia said that all the "revelations" in the Hellcat series were a series of lies calculated to decieve Hellcat. A good retcon of a bad retcon!

What were some of the revelations?

An MK Daimon Hellstrom book would rock.

That's what I said on another thread! I think, the MK treatment, done in a Hellblazer type of way with little to no interference from the regular MU would be very cool. Maybe they could get Jamie Delano or even beg Ellis to do it.

Has Delano done any Marvel work at all? I can't remember any. Hmm.

Well he was brilliant on Hellblazer, so I think that he and Hellstrom would be a natural pairing.

This was a great series. Unfortunately, the main thing that I remember from it was Marvel calling out Michael Bair for being unprofessional in the letter column and kicking him off the book. I don't recall this having been done before or since.

My god, what an amazing read Ellis and Manco's Hellstorm were! The torture house of the demoness Inanna - brrrrr. The Jayne Cutter character was slightly annoying, that was my only problem.

Although I liked the cheesy superhero trappings of the pre-Ellis beginning of the series. I loved the Rosemary's Baby type origin rehash and the revelation that Daimon turned to comic books for escape from messed up home life, thus why he joined the Defenders.

I don't know - Marvel could conceivably have both versions of Daimon if it wanted to - cheesy 70's superhero and badass king of hell.

I like the cheesy superhero version. Those are my favorite Defenders stories.

Sounds cool.
Which issue did Ellis start?
And how long did the book last?
(BTW...Ellis' DRUID mini rules!)

I forget the exact numbering, unfortunately. If you search on www.mycomicshop.com you might be able to find out

And Druid did indeed rule. We need Marvel horror of this caliber!!!!!!

The biggest was that Hellstorm was NOT the Son of Satan or that devil dude calling himself Satan in the Hellstorm series. He was the Son of Satannish, who was really the son of Dormmamu!

So that Hellstorm was in fact Dormammu's grandson, and the two of them were part of Dormammu's plan to take over Hell bit by bit. In the Hellcat series, it seems that Dormammu/Satannish/Hellstorm are going to take over the parts of Hell ruled by Mephisto, Hela and Pluto (or something like that), but Hellcat gets wise and reveals who Hellstorm's "real" father is.

If true, it turns the entire Hellstorm series into meaningless gibberish.

Liek I said, I'm glad the Marvel Knights encyclopedia said all those "revelations" were a series of lies calculated to decieve Hellcat for whatever reason.

Yeah, besides "Son of Satannish" sounds stupid.

I did like the look they gave himk in the Hellcat series though.

Well, before he coppied Dormmammu's head at least. Didn't he also appear a while abck in an issue of Wolverine? What happened there?

He did have that look in his own book already.

In Wolverine he just had a guest appearance, told Wolverine about some "ancient horrors" in some artefact wolvie got, then left.

Nothing to write home about.

The Hellstorm series was pure genius tho. It was Marvels version of Vertigo's Lucifer, even before there was a Vertigo lucifer book.

Damn good. It would have rivaled the vertigo stuff I'd say.

13 to 21, I think. (I'm certain on 13, not quite sure on the final issue, except that it had a Fregrado cover.) Very good stuff.

Hellstorm was a great book. Had really spooky but crisp art from Michael Blair.

Hellstorm and Druid kicked ass. I like Ellis & Manco as a team . They should come back & have Dr. Strange resurect Druid for a mission or somethi'n of that sort. I'd like to see a better fight between Hellstorm & Druid . Druid died kind of cheap .

Since a Hellcat project was just revealed to be in the works maybe we will get at least an appearance by Hellstorm.

I guess It will be back to the campy Hellstrom as opposed to the dark scary dude in the Ellis/Manco run.
