I heard a rumor a while back that Gandalf (from the Lord of the Rings novels) made an unoffical appearance in the Fables comic. Is this true? If so, please give details, as it could lead to a very interesting college paper.

Unlikely it's only Fables who are in the public domain that appear.

Well, he did say "unnoficial". Afterall it was implied that the first lands to be conquered were Narnia and Oz. Use a thinly veiled psuedonym and you can get away with it.

Oz is in the public domain. Narnia isn't though, neither is Peter Pan (though it should be, but Britian makes a special clause for Peter Pan's copyright for the Children's Hospital that owns it)
Oz and Wonderland are both public domain and both have made numorus cameos and referances in Fables.

Much like Fu Manchu in the League of Extrodinary Gentlemen.
It's obvious who it is, but he's never called by a name, so it's fair game.
But I'd rather they brought Labrinyth over than LOTR.
How cool would a Bowie Goblin King be in the book?
That hairdo and those pants, it'd be "da bomb".

Everyone would think its a Sandman cameo

Just starting into this series.
Anybody recommend a good website that deals with the characters' literary origins?

I sort of wonder if we'll see the "Aslan" stand-in again some day, what with a certain major motion picture coming up.
(Sure, it says the lion was murdered...but the lion's died before. More than once! It never takes.) ;)

Would be very unlikely, and very improbable, as well as give away the identity of the Adversary, due to the Adversary being an unpredicted presence in his world, in which case Eru or the Valar would give him permission to use his full powers, and he would basically smite him. :D
Beyond that...copyright.

In The Last Castle, yes, Gandalf had an appearance, but never spoke and you never saw his face, just a view from the back amidst a crowd of other fables inside the castle.
Here's a picture...

That's not nessisarily Gandalf. It's just an old guy in a robe and hat. It could be a generic Wizard, an excaping Pesent, or a thinly veiled Gandalf referance.
And if it was Gandalf, wouldn't have made his stand with the other Castle defender? He seems to be the kind of stand up guy who would make the last stand.

My Fables website has a link to each character's story from their individual character pages. Except, of course, for those whose origins have not yet been revealed (such as Mr. Grandours, or the Forsworn Knight).

With Lord of the Rings coming out in movies as Last Castle was published? It's obviously something that Russel threw in there but wasn't in the script.
What's to say he didn't make the last stand? We're not shown the death of every character who we've seen in that panel, or in other parts of the issue. We never see him again, at any rate.
Plus, Gandalf was a Maia, and as such could abandon his physical body with no harm to himself, as easily as another Fable might take off his shirt.

Also I'd like to think Gandalf's power >>> anything at The Last Castle.

Looks like a great site...
but as an FYI, the text is all but unreadable because of your background.
And sometimes the background to the "book" disappears altogether.
I want to read it, but I can't.

I don't know why. It looks fine in my browser. Are you using Internet Explorer? I can't figure out why this is happening. I keep checking the code but it all looks fine.
Tell me the specifics of the problem. What color is the background appearing? And what exactly do you mean by "background to the 'book' "? You mean the background pattern image?
Let me know...

I think he means that it's hard to read plain text on the background. A change in either the background or the text would make it easier to read.
And thanks for giving the new address. When your site moved I tried to find it to no avail. The character section is especially helpful for the lesser known Fables.

I don't remember seeing Gandalf in Fables- I may need to look a bit closer.
If he was included in the title, I think he'd most likely be part of the 'witches' circle. Maybe not.

No problem.
So you mean making the grey text darker? Why is it hard to read? What color is the background?
The reason I am asking is, every time I load the site, it reads just fine to me. It's dark grey text against a plain white background. Yet it would seem that for others it is different. So let me know exactly what is going on.

I checked out your site (great by the way) because I wanted to get info about the series to see if my brother would like it as he's into fairy tales alot. Anyway I thought it was easy to read for the most part but it might make it better for others if the text was darker and a little bigger.

On my computer, the white background stops when I click on the name of a character in the character information section. For me, when I click into a character summary the text is light gray while the background is the darker gray pattern you have surrounding the book.

OK... did a little spot checking.
The white background graphic for the book does not display on individual character pages in Apple Safari. So the allreasy light gray texy appears on the gray patterned background, and can not be read.
Switched over to Explorer, and the graphic loaded. I would however, consider darkening up the font nonetheless. The gray is very hard to read on the white book page.
Hope that helps. I'm going to do some reading there now. Looks like a great site!

Thanks for all the help, guys...I've done some fixing and I think I might have discovered the problem. Let me know how it looks now; is it fixed or still doing the same thing? Also made the text slightly darker, let me know if that's better as well.
Thanks again!
