Didn't see a thread for this yet, so I figured I'd start one. I picked this up after seeing a preview online and I gotta say, I'm really glad I did -- it's a total headtrip. It's basically just a set up issue, but man, what a set up. The writing is literate, poetic and uses big, $10 words without sounding pretentious. The artwork is outstanding, too. It's chaotic and twisted and fits the story perfectly so far. I do believe I'm hooked.

Veeeery interesting. I personally think that the events of this issue were acually sybolic instead of a literal telling of the birth of Atomika. I mean if Mother Russia represented Russia it's self, then her child could be the people, who were sacrificed in order to create the being known as Atomika, or I couild be reading too much into this. ;)
Either way, it was good.

I thoroughly enjoyed this, and considering two of my local hangouts were sold out of it, I'm guessing that a lot of other people did. I found it a really interesting concept and hopefully this title will be around for a while to come.

I just wanted to chime in and thank everyone who has posted on this thread for taking a chance on Atomika #1. Both Sal and I are fully aware that picking up a new book from a new publisher, by two guys that aren't exactly Wizard Top Ten is a risk, so we appreciate you taking it. And I'm glad you all seem to be enjoying the book.

Very well written but ugly artwork. Less like The Red Star than I expected. Will stick with it at least as far as issue two but don't know if I wanna look at that art every month...

I'm really interested.
I got the first issue and loved it. The art is a little off sometimes (human faces are all droopy and ugly where they should be more normal, especially in the case of the young boy), but I love the sprawling, tormented magic/industrial landscapes. Also, I really dig how the metaphor and literal meanings of the text dance in and out of one another.
I hope the writing in the next issue is not as overblown as in the first, since it works in the first issue by replicating the rhetoric of the Bible or other doctrines.
I'm very interested to see where this is going.

Well I've been hyped about this comic for quite a long time, glad to have finally read it. The first issue was a pretty good start giving the readers a good idea of the state Russia is in, as well as Atomika's own origin. Glad to say I'll be sticking around until the end.

i like the concept, setting and all that.
so giants are pounding on...things...and that provides the power for russia? ...'kay. that's different.
the art leaves a bit to be desired, but who knows, it may grow on me. i'll give it a shot for a while, see how things pan out.

I enjoyed it, thought Sal's art was pretty great, but it was all set-up, so I'm reserving full judgment until issue #2. I like my stories to kick off with a bang, generally, so this didn't fit my own level of expectations, but I'm going to stick with it for at least one more issue.

There's an article at Pulse that just went up if anyone's interested.
