gorgeous collection. how many years sis that take you to compile? (sorry i'm just made of questions tonight) did you get most at cons?

For many years Mike Mignola was tempted into the embrace of demon rum. Rick Cortes, knowing a likely mark when he saw one, was only too happy to provide repeated introductions in the cozy confines of his apartment. Discussions of artwork turned to drawn examples. His cup was never dry, the devil Cortes would see to that.

Days would pass in a haze for the young artist, lost in a blur of pen and ink and the echoing laugh of the Philipino pirate. Freedom was promised as soon as he finished that page. In the meantime, have another drink. The blindfold of his drunkeness hid the deception. Each night a new sheet of velum replaced the old. This continued for twelve nights.

What inner resolve Mignola found to break the fetters of his delirium is unknown. He would drink the fiery poison while Cortes watched, then vomited it out once his captor was out of sight. He built up his muscles by pitting them against each other in the style of Hindu yogis. On the sixteenth night, fashioning a rope from the strands of his hair, the artist escaped from the unbarred window.

They say Cortes screamed in rage that night but soon set his sights on a young apprentice named Sook.

Steve Kerrigan: Look 'ere, dad-- a Mike Mignola drawin'!

Darryl Kerrigan: A Mike Mignola drawin'?! What're you gonna do with a Mike Mignola drawin'? How much duz 'e want fer it?

Steve Kerrigan: Thousand dollars.

Darryl Kerrigan: A thousand dollars?! Aw, 'e's dreamin'!!

from The Castle (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0118826/) a fine little heart-warming Australian film you should watch, because it's funny, and also, I want more people to get it when I quote from it. Maybe it's more funny if you've been to a backyard barbeque in Melbourne and driven to Bonny Doon, but if you haven't, I'm sure it's still worth a few chuckles.

Aaaah, the serenity.

The interesting thing is that a few pieces end up selling for high prices ( 800 range like that almost colossus page) , and people get greedy and the prices skyrocket. Also interestingly more and more people see the high prices and start selling their mignolas, making his work seem less rare, and giving people choices between items, probably resulting in driving the prices back down. Big auction houses play the angles to make artists works seem rareer then they are, for example by refusing to host several different items by the same artist in an auction, an spacing the auctions with the same artist far apart. they kinda starve their buyers, and make them compete. if they didn't do this the market would go so radically up and down that it would be virtually impossible to estimate values with any accuracy . question; Is it a general rule that published works fetch higher prices?
Honestly, both of these seem pretty crazy high to me. Theyre beautiful don't get me wrong, but ouch!!

Tad
03-14-2005, 09:56 AM
Did the Almost Colossus page go for 800 something? These days, that's got to be considered a great deal. I guess anything with Hellboy on it commands a bigger price. If anyone's been keeping track, I'd love to see an overview of what the various pieces of art have been selling for.

Mike sold the pieces from the second Odd Jobs book featuring HB (11 x 8, I think) last summer in San Diego for $1000 each. Quickly, I might add. That's unframed, direct from the artist @ a show. Is that, in your opinion, overpriced? I deeply regret not spending the $800 on the Abe Sapien: Drums of the Dead cover way back when, not to mention the $3000 for the Lost Army cover. Do you fine folks buy much original art? I ask because I've bought, sold and traded for years, and from personal experience, once a certain piece goes into a collection, if you want it, it often takes substantial money to pry it out again (o' how I have paid...). Just curious. BTW, the smaller framed piece is mine, and it's one of four Mignola drawings I've parted with over the past year. The others were all in the $800 to $2500 range. I'll see if I can figure out how to post the images if any are interested (or if some kind soul has the server space...)

Those of us with original art bought years ago have trouble keeping up with the changes. My impression was that sketchbook pages were going for less than a thousand. Didn't know about the Odd Jobs stuff. So your small drawing might be overpriced a bit but because it's a Hellboy piece, you'll probably get it.

But if you get it... then it's not overpriced, it's the going price. :)

these are up too no hb. Did MM ink the 2nd?
I just looked over your listing again darkmonkeygod, and the framing you had done I imagine boosts the value of the piece as archival framing is super pricey.I've had a couple lithographs archivally framed and while its very improtant to preserve the piece, it is amazingly expensive. I had a piece done ( probably about 18x 24 ) that cost with no mat and in a simple frame, about 200 USD.

hellboyone

darkmonkeygod: Like Tad said...none of my Mignolas cost me more than maybe $600 (that includes full comic pages), all obtained at least 3 years ago all the way up to 8 or 9 years ago. I have a set of 3 framed that includes 2 pieces from the first lunch box and a convention pin-up that cost me $600 total! Imagine...3 different Mignola pieces for that price? When I bought it from a guy on eBay, the guy had posted it at least twice. He couldn't give 'em away at the time. But I was happy to relieve him of his burden. :)

So you can imagine why we think this is overpriced. Good luck on the sale, though. More power...

Only dangerous when not performed by a professional, luckily, Sir Ed is a master of the erotic glass arts. I myself am looking forward to seeing the performance, although I will have to be careful not to get distracted along with Rick, in case I forget about the heist.

He usually has some art for sale at San Diego Comicon. No original pages have been sold since Conqueror Worm. Last year he sold his beautiful sketchbook and had some of the pages from it for sale.

Check in at Preview Night or the art will be gone. Prices have gone way up with the demand increasing. The movie brought lots of people to the comics and a bunch of them would like original art.

And watch eBay, of course.
