It's a good question though.

Back in Black is important, because it showed the band could exist after Bon Scott, and indeed, not only exist, but improve.

Having said that, Appetite rocks like nothing on earth.

Here is a longer thought on the matter. Just in terms of one song, I might take Back in Black over Appetite, just because Back in Black rocks me like no other. That said, the album has a few flaws. First of all, they put Back in Black on as track 6. I assume that means it was on the second side when in album form. How do you not lead off with a song called Back in Black? That would be like if Appetite had Welcome to the Jungle on third.

But there are also a couple of tunes on there that are forgetable, in that random AC/DC song kind of way. Shake a Leg, Let Me Put My Love Into You, Have a Drink On Me, none of them are bad, but they aren't going on the Greatest Hits collection either. Whereas if GNR really, really put out a greatest hits (not the one they did put out) it would be like 90% Appetite.

Great as BACK IN BLACK is, it's nowhere as great as APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION. And I say that even though I am more an AC/DC fan than GnR fan.

A4D wins on overall quality of songs, range and musicianship. It wins handily in all of these categories.

Yep, it was the opener to side 2. I don't think that's a big problem, really. They spread good material all through the album and put the really solid title track in the middle, to maintain momentum.

I'm a huge G'n'R fan, so i'll say Appetite but even people who arent big fans love the album.

Back in Black is a great album but Appetite gives me chills when I hear the first notes from Welcome to the Jungle.

Appetite consistently makes the Top 20 on the various Greatest Albums of All time lists and is usually the first album from the 1980's to do so.

Back in Black always comes in much, much farther down the list.

And a better way of asking the question is this: How much cash tax free money would it take you to never listen to Appetite/Back In Black again?

In this case, never means that you wouldn't buy a copy of it or make the conscious effort to listen to one of the songs from the album. If you were in your car and a cut from the album came on, you'd have to change the station. However, there is some logic and sanity involved as well. If you were at a bar/restaurant and the song came up on the jukebox you wouldn't have to run screaming from the place.

I don't own Appetite and don't care to. Sure, Welcome to the Jungle is a good song but really GNR does nothing for me. OTOH, Back in Black in constantly on my CD rotation.

Considering my current grad school poverty, not too damn much. Appetite is a great album, but I've heard that disc enough over the years to comfortably put a price on its absence. The whole album is burned into my memory anyway. Three months' rent and utilities would be a nice ballpark sum.

God, if making spare cash were that easy, I'd sell a bunch of albums off.

Looks at everyone. Do you even need to ask ? G'n'R kick tons of ass and pretty much brought back the wild dirty side of Hard Rock. Thier debut album remains one of the greatest ever for a reason.

Now I love AC/DC but Back In Black Is pretty much an album I love to listen to at times. I usually play thier AC/DC Live package more though. Hearing the fans erupt at times for those packages make the album great.

Do you actually beleive that, or are you just saying it because no one else is?
No, I'm as serious as I can be when making these kinds of comparisons. (Which is not very.)

Frankly, I'm not a big Guns 'N' Roses fan. Blame it on my coming of musical age post-Nirvana. (Actually, come to think of it, I like Nevermind about as much as Appetite ... that is, I enjoy, as much as I can, the omnipresent radio fodder and couldn't care less about the rest.) I'm not much of an AC/DC fan, either, but I like "Back in Black," "You Shook Me All Night Long," and "Hell's Bells" better than "Welcome to the Jungle," "Paradise City," and "Sweet Child of Mine." Whatsisname has a better rock 'n' roll voice than Axl.

And to answer Phrozen's question, I'll take ten bucks for both albums (neither of which I own anymore). I could use some gas.

Why couldn't you make it easy like choosing between Physical Graffiti or Metallica's "Black Album"?

I'm going with Back In Black. A lesser band would have called it a day after Bon Scott kicked. Though the "A" side of the album (yes, I have it in vinyl, you whippersnappers!) is only "okay", the "B" side kicks beaucoup ass and takes no prisoners.

I love "Appetite for Destruction." It's about as perfect as debut albums get. But if I were loading up my CD player, it would be a close second to "Back In Black."

But don't touch my copy of London Calling or somebody's gonna get hurt! :D

Back In Black.

Personally, this topic will be somewhat one-sided due to what I have noticed as there being a lot of GNR fans at CBR. My guess is a lot of it is youth-driven, that many of the GNR fans were just getting into hard rock when Appetite came out. I realize that's not going to be the case with everyone, but just my guess.

For me, I first started liking hard rock around the time Back In Black came out and still loved hard rock when Appetite came out. To me, Back In Black is better considering the death of Bon Scott. For AC/DC to overcome that and release one of the greatest hard rock albums is a monumental achievement. You're talking about a band of guys who are absolutely devastated by their band leader and one of their best friends dying. Dead as in dead. A band that hires a singer who seems to fit the bill, but was a unknown factor; who I believe had some major difficulty with writer's block on BIB because of the nervousness of being Bon's replacement. A band who was building chemistry and confidence to only have it shattered. I'm not a big AC/DC fan (god, I hate that Thunderstruck song), but Back In Black is just an incredible album.

GNR didn't have to fight these battles with Appetite. Nothing against them because there's no doubt that Appetite is one of the greatest debuts ever. Not one of my favs, but I can recognize it for what it's worth. However, Back In Black to me has three songs that have stood the test of time with the music masses: Back In Black, Shook Me All Night Long, and Hells Bells. Appetite For Destruction has one song: Welcome To The Jungle.

I'm sure that last sentence will garner some ill responses, but y'know what, it's true. Before anyone starts rattling off song names, there really are only two other songs that can be mentioned: Paradise City and Sweet Child O' Mine. Personally, Paradise City is probably my favorite GNR song, but it doesn't hold enough weight to rank with the three aforementioned AC/DC songs, nor is it a song that the music masses remember well. A case could be made for Sweet Child. But, damn, that song is just plain ol' annoying. For its annoyance and being overplayed to death on MTV, the song just isn't going to hold up to the test of time. A GNR fan may request to hear it, but that's about it.

Back In Black, easily.

I thought the thread was about what we liked better, not what the 'masses' liked. And if you think the 'masses' will request "Jungle" more often than "Sweet Child"...um. Well, personally I think you're wrong. When APPETITE first hit it big on MTV the "Sweet Child" video ATE the network alive...and we all know who watches MTV.

Anyway, song for song APPETITE is probably the stronger album, although BACK IN BLACK does have some amazing -songs- on it. I'm going with APPETITE if only for that opening riff to "Mr Brownstone."

The majority of the songs on Appetite are from the first take of the song. IIRC, the producer said that the most takes they had of any song was 6.

Hardly what I'd call overproduced.

I'm gonna debate that. To metal fans AC/DC's Back In Black maybe more Important. But Guns n Roses kicked the doors down and brought Hard Rock back to Its dirty side after years of being away!

Hell the entire albums nearly made Into everyones heads at this point. Guns n Roses just did an album that sadly they'll never top no matter how awesome and how great the rest of thier library of work Is.

And I think the Use Your Illusion albums was pretty much the best damn work that I've seen Guns n Roses do. Thats my belief.

Actually, hard rock was already around and kicking just fine. GNR was at the end of the run for hard rock until grunge came along. Well I guess not the "end" of hard rock, but it definitely took a hiatus for awhile during the flannel shirt period of music.

I'm sorry, but I just don't believe that some of those GnR songs are being played on the radio, the way Axl tosses around the F word in them. If they are being played, it's an edited version, so it doesn't really count (to me).

BACK IN BLACK is one of the best hard rock/metal albums ever, and APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION is arguably the best debut album for a group ever.
AC/DC is my favorite band of all-time, but I have to give the nod to APPETITE because of the climate in which it was released. It came out in the heyday of hairbands and reminded the world what REAL rock 'n roll should sound like. Some say SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT killed the hairband era, but APPETITE kicked the door open so bands like Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam could walk through.

In my opinion, no other band comes close to AC/DC's longevity and consistent quality (other than U2, the Stones or maybe Aerosmith), but if Axl wasn't such a headcase, today we'd be mentioning G'nR in the same breath as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Who.
