Stan Lee from the Spider-Man days
Chris Claremont from his earl X-Men stuff (Even though I still like his work now)
Bendis and JMS are really high on my list from Spider-Man, Ultimate Spider-Man and such... Robert Kirkman is really climbing my list too, I love his whole "Comics are fun" attitude and I just hope he's given more books in the future.

Wow, I was stumped for a second there. I mean, I love some of Lee's stuff and Byrne's older stuff, but overall... meh.
And there's a ton of guys who wrote some great stuff for BOTH companies, so I didn't really consider them to be "Marvel guys". But I'll probably go with Roger Stern for his 80s Spider-Man and Peter David for his definitive Hulk run, those two guys speak "Marvel" to me.

John Ostrander. His Heroes 4 Hire was brilliant. It is total bull sh!+ that Marvel gave up on it only after 19 published issues  .

Stan Lee on Spider-Man, FF, and Thor.
Roger Stern's Spider-Man comes in second.

Chris Claremont, I grew up reading his X-Men, New Mutants and Excalibur.

Gruenwald. I could also say Brubaker (or Michelinie or Thomas), but no - Gruenwald is it. I grew up with his Cap, thought that Crossbones rocked the house and fell in love with Diamondback. So yeah, definitely Gruenwald.

Very tough question, but in order: Stan Lee (everything), Jim Starlin (WARLOCK and CAPTAIN MARVEL), Claremont on UNCANNY, Roger Stern (AMAZ. SPIDER-MAN and AVENGERS), Jim Shooter (AVENGERS), Steve Engelhart (AVENGERS), Steve Gerber (MAN-THING, HOWARD THE DUCK, DEFENDERS), Frank Miller (DAREDEVIL), Peter David (HULK, X-FACTOR), Kurt Busiek (AVENGERS), John Byrne (FF), Mark Waid (CAPTAIN AMERICA, FF, KA-ZAR), Fabian Nicieza (T-BOLTS, NEW WARRIORS), ... geez, I could go on and on...
Right now? Ed Brubaker on CAP.

Yeah, I'm having a tough time with this question, too. A lot of my favorite writers have done great work for both Marvel and DC. Also, a lot of my favorites have had at least one run that I disliked.
At the moment, I am thinking of Don McGregor. That pale scottish-american wrote the best Black Panther until Priest came along. He transformed War of the Worlds from crappy science-fiction into a mixture of saga and wry social commentary that also included the first interracial kiss in the history of comics. And his Luke Cage stories possessed an unusual dignity, given the blaxploitation roots of the character.
I realize that McGregor went on to do some excellent independent work, on Sabre, and for DC, on Detectives, Inc., but he is really best known for his work at Marvel.

I would have to give it a tie between Fabian Nicieza (T-Bolts, X-Force, New Warriors) and Walt Simonson (X-Factor, Mighty Thor), with a close second being either Kurt Busiek (T-Bolts, Marvels) or Chris Claremont (X-Men, Black Goliath, Iron Fist, Ms. Marvel).

Actually, Louise Simonson is right up there for me, too, with New Mutants, Power Pack and Warlock.
Chris Claremont (Uncanny X-Men, X-Men, The New Mutants, Excalibur, Wolverine, Marvel Team-Up...)
Louise Simonson (X-Factor)
Peter David (X-Factor, Madrox, Incredible Hulk, Captain Marvel)
Steve Englehart (Avengers, Dr. Strange)
Roger Stern (Avengers, Avengers Infinity, Avengers Forever)
Jim Starlin (Captain Marvel, Adam Warlock, Thanos...)
John Byrne (Fantastic Four)
Ann Nocenti (Longshot #1-6, Daredevil, Classic X-Men)
Kurt Busiek (Avengers, Avengers Forever #1-12)

If we are talking strictly Marvel, and if I had to go with only one choice I'd have to say PAD. His Hulk run will always be my favorite. Nobody else comes close. Plus he did a damn fine job with Captain Marvel as well.
If I could cheat and add in a few others I'd go with: Busiek (the living Marvel encyclopedia!), Starlin (nobody can write a Thanos or Warlock story like Starlin), Waid (a writer who stood up to the "suits" always impresses me as much as his stories do), and the late Mark Gruenwald (his "Squadron Supreme" was way ahead of its time).
If we are talking about all comics, then I couldn't do it. The list would just be too long!

I remember reading some of those stories as a kid. The Panther versus the Klan. My God. I'd really love seeing a reprint of that stuff.
There's much stuff that's gone by and many of us have never read or can hardly remember.
Some of my favorite writers:
Chris Claremont
Walter Simonson
Len Wein
Jim Shooter
Christopher Priest
Marv Wolfman
Roy Thomas
Gerry Conway
Bill Mantlo
Steve Englehart
Ann Nocenti
Frank Miller
Stan Lee
David Kraft, Don Mac Gregor and all the others whom I can't remember.
Since we're at this, I'd like to mention a latter talent whom I thought had a lot of potential: Glenn Alan Herdling.

Agreed. In modern times Bendis. In my childhood Frank Miller's Daredevil, and Claremont and Davis for X-Men and Excalibur.
I loved Stan Lee's early Spider-man but detested his early X-Men (Just unreadable, and contradictory).

Kurt Busiek, thanks to Marvels, Avengers and Thunderbolts. He may not have done much other stuff I've enjoyed, but these three books are a big reason why I'm reading comics today.
Right now my favorite is without a doubt Robert Kirkman, although it's hard to not factor in Invincible and Walking Dead when thinking about him.

So here I go:
Frank Millar

Brian Bendis

Christopher Priest
Stan Lee
David Moloch
Dan Slott
Kurt Busiek
Mark Waid
and...I'll be kicking myself today when I remember all those writers I knew I forgot.

I'm going with Frank Miller (it's weird trying to think of him without Batman, but anyways...) for his amazing work on Daredevil, Chris Claremont for the X-men stuff (of course) but also for Excalibur (the first series, which I loved so much), Grant Morrison for making the X-men cool again, and Kurt Buseik for early Thunderbolts and Marvels.

Chris Claremont (X-Men)
Frank Miller (Daredevil)
Peter David (Hulk)
John Byrne (Fantastic Four)

I think... Bendis has been scoring huge points in the last few years. Before that, I loved DeMatteis on Spidey so very much, but yet to really fall for anything else he's done at Marvel. PAD's been doing uniformly good work and impressing the hell out of me for years, as has Priest. (Although I think Cap/Falcon may have to go down as a misfire...)

Stan Lee
I don't care about the characters he created or defined, he's written a lot of the best comic books ever written...... Check out the Marvel Visionaries: Jack Kirby/ Stan Lee/ Steve Ditko for some of (and not all of) his best work.
Other great writers...
Frank Miller for the many great Daredevil/ Elektra stories.
Chris Claremont for Uncanny X-Men #98-176, the Wolverine mini series, God Loves Man Kills
Peter David for The Incredible Hulk, X-Factor, The Spectacular Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2099, and God Loves: Man Kills
Brian Michael Bendis for Ultimate Spider-Man & Marvel Team Up, Daredevil, Alias, the Pulse, and New Avengers
Mark Millar for the Ultimates, MK Spider-Man, and Wolverine
Kurt Busiek for Avengers, Marvels, and Untold Tales of Spider-Man

Kurt Busiek - Nobody can even come close to the level of quality he writes with. I still mourn the end of the Power Company. :(
Mark Waid - Another great writer who just gets how comics should be written.
Fabian Niceza- Great writer, again just gets what a comic should be about.
Jim Shooter - I loved the Starbrand comic, he had great ideas ahead of his time.

Mark Waid (Fantastic Four)
Fabian Nicieza (T-Bolts and Cable/Deadpool)
Mark Millar (Ultimate X-Men and Ultimates)
Kurt Busiek (Avengers and T-Bolts)

He is doing a Spider-Man/Human Torch miniseries and his She-Hulk is returning in October.
Ya I know its just the She-Hulk series doesn't appeal to me and I'm just going to pick up the TPB of the Spiderman/Human Torch mini series.

All-time? Dave Micheline. His Amazing Spider-Man run MADE me into a comic fan.
Current? Since I'm only down to two Marvel comics (Ultimates and Runaways), I'll have to go with.... Brian Vaughn. His Ex Machina and Y The Last Man are fantastic too.
