View Full Version : Making My Record vol. 2, Name?

Punchy

So I really need to start thinking of a name for my band if I'm going to use a name at all. But instead of trying to think of a name right off the bat, I want to decide on an approach first. See, I'm a little hesitant to just give the band a name. I mean all of the arrangements are mine, most of the compostions are originals. There isn't one band line-up, some tracks will have vocals, some will have sax, some will have trumpet, some will have combinations of those instruments. It's more like a solo project. But like I said in my last thread; my name, Lyman Medeiros, is hard to pronounce and spell and those things are working against you when it comes to marketing.

So I figure here are my options:

a) I can say to hell with it and release it under my name anyway.

b) I could use my name and a band name, like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

c) I could use a word synonymous with cooperative to give a better idea that it isn't one band so much as it is a collaboration of musicians, like Groove Collective.

d) I could give myself an moniker, like MF Doom.

What do you think? I don't like a) or d) at the moment but I really don't have any clue of what I want to do.

I contacted Mahfood yesterday. I'm sending him some stuff tomorrow including the rough mixes of what I've done. I'm also trying to get another band rehearsal together so I can book another studio session but I think my piano player is out of town. The ball isn't moving as quickly as I'd like it to, but I'm really depending on the kidness of my friends who are practically donating their time and talents so I'm in no position to be bossy.

That's where I'm at. Let me know what you think.

You should name your project The Grab-bags or something similar. That way it sounds like a band name but, at the same time, it describes your project.

I say use a moniker. Trent Reznor has his Nine Inch Nails; Glenn Danzig has his...well, Danzig. Even myself, a fellow musician, I have my own moniker. I prefer that over just a bare name. But thats just me... lets see what everyone else has to say :D

Maybe a combination of these two? Just use one sort of blanket name to put all your stuff out under. Like how Conner Oberst = Bright Eyes, Matt Johnson = The The, etc.

That is the worst name suggestion ever.
It's one of those band names that mean absoultly nothing, and only sounds cool to the person who came up with it.
WORST NAME EVER.

Matt, ive had time to think about it, and i no longer hate the name.
I now hate you for coming up with it. If some Emo band comes out in a year with that name, it's your ass.

It's a name I've used so I guess we're just a match made in heaven. It eventually changed to Worse Than Hitler.

What's your stage name? Most musicians have stage names & literally remake themselves into an image they desire to be. For example, Janet Susan Ballion became Siouxsie Sioux (Susan became Siouxsie), Steven Bailey became Steven Severin (Severin was a character from the Velvet Underground "Venus in Furs") & formed the nucleus of Siouxsie & the Banshees (Banshees came from the film, Cry of the Banshee).

Just pull together different elements from artists & source material you admire & make it your own.

It's your decision to make it a band or solo record.

I think Punchy's stage name is "That guy on the bass".

He'd probably have to pay royalties to Lionel Richie or something. Unless you're a go-nowhere punk band, it's rarely a good idea to name yourself something that could be seeing as capitalizing on someone else's work/idea/fame.

I think Villainous Funk is a rewrite that has similar connotations but flows better of the toungue, doesn't sound as clumsy.

Nah. I did get the idea though from the name of a compilation associated with a documentary series that apparently appeared once on British TV about British youth movements that were associated with black music such as the Teds, the Mods, Northern Soul, etc. Their compilation for The Acid Jazz Generation was sub-titled "Thelonius Monk and Melodius Funk."

I dunno. It's a good suggestion. But it sounds more like a description than a name. I'm working on a list I'll post soon.

I wasn't sure whether I wanted to throw this one out, because I've been entertaining the idea of using it myself. But heck, who knows when I'll be able to record an album, and I can think of more titles. I have a list of them stored up already.

So. Are you ready? Here it is.

What Ever Happened to the Band of Tomorrow?

I don't know if that fits the kind of album you're making(to my mind it kind of implies experimental music and synthesizers), but I think it'd look great on a CD cover.

Though it would be amusing to encourage Punchy to make a career of dressing like Galactus on stage, if not so amusing for his record sales.

Or at least give it a listen if it were on one of those listening stations at Borders.

You geeks? No way.

Saw Mahfood today at the LA Con. He gave me a bunch of stuff including a record that he did the cover for. It's b/w which is what I'm asking for as well and it looks really great. All I need is ... you know ... the music.

The keyboardist in the band also plays piano with Steve Tyrell (the vocalist I tour with). He's really buys right now so I think I'm going to skip another rehearsal and just book a recording session hopefully for this week or next. All I need to do is get together with the singer and go over some things. I think it's a good idea and it'll save me money from renting the rehearsal studio.

My finalized name list is coming.
