With the excellence and popularity of all the manga covered within its pages over the years, is Shonen Jump the best manga source out there...

To name a few:

Dragonball Z(obviously)
Ruroni Kenshin
Naruto
One Piece
Yu Yu Hakusho
(I could go on)

...I certainly think so!

Well, I've certainly been touting it as the best deal in comics, that's for sure...

Every issue is on time (first week of the month), contains over 300 pages of manga, and costs $5. This is a deal currently unmatched by ANY Western comic book... even the other anthologies like Super Manga Blast and magazines like Heavy Metal don't give you as much bang for the buck.

Add in the bonus that you can find SJ USA in just about any 7-11 or bookstore, and you've got a license to kick publishing ass.

I've been with it since they began the USA edition, and I'm looking forward to it every month.

Does anyone know what they're replacing Dragonball Z! with? I know they're previewing Dr. Slump ('bout time that got done!) but I don't know what the new permanent replacement title will be.

Bah, since Viz cannot legally publish things in the UK, SJ will always suck!

Not a clue, but if they're previewing Dr.Slump, I'm definetely going to check it out, and hopefully that will mean tpbs of the series as well.

Viz is bringing out Dr. Slump as a series of GNs, same as they've done with Toriyama's other works. The Shonen Jump USA preview is just to whet your appetite.

If Shonen Jump were the best in manga, I'd have given up on manga a long time ago.

Regardless of opinion, the facts dont lie. they are the best action manga.

No, they are the most popular. But popularity doesn't equal quality. I could think of action series I would describe as being "better" than what Shounen Jump publishes.

Let's start with Hellsing, Berserk, Mermaid Forest and Chrono Crusade (Chrno Crusade). I'd rate any of those titles as being "better" action manga than anything Shounen Jump has published. They just aren't anywhere near as popular as a Naruto or a One Piece.

Oh really? Excellent. I'll definetely keep an eye out for them then.

Viz has the manga rights to Gash (Zatch) Bell. I could replace Z, or they might not replace it at all to save money. Did anyone notice that the current issue has different paper and only 260 pages of manga? :(

Well, two of those titles are also aimed a much older audience... Hellsing and Berserk are not shonen titles. Brilliant action titles, yes, but not in the same category as One Piece or Naruto.

While I do think Shonen Jump's collection of titles are good, particularly One Piece and Naruto, their translations make me cringe.

As long as the plot makes sense and they don't angelicize the names ("Lenny"... *shudder*), I have no real complaints about the translation.

What have they translated in such a way as to change the plot or tone of the characters? I read the TW fanscans before I read the SJ magazine versions, and I don't recall any difference that were too outrageous, (though I can't say I've actually compared them side-by-side, either).

He asked for what I thought were better "action" manga. Not really specifying if they were meant for a different audience or not.

I just can't get used to mentally correcting Zolo(argh!) to Zoro or reading some of the horrid attack names in Naruto(Evil Eyes? Art of the friggin Valentine? ARGHHHH!). And they're inconsistant to, they've used at least two different names for Zoro's Lion killing Sword tech so far(TGiger Trap and Tiger Hunt).

Shonen Jump is good, but so is Tokyopop. Those two companies got the best manga.

Sorry, but asside from EARLY DB and DBZ, all those titles make me want to cring at their unappealing qualities.

I've never picked up a copy of Jump because of the poor line up. Maybe it's more geared toward little kids growing out of Pokemon, but not me I'm afraid.
I wish Vis or someone would produce a consitently good Adult Manga Anthology. With good material. Like Plantes, GTO, Lupin the Third, Battle Royal, and the like.

Well, a lot of other people (including myself) enjoy One Piece and Naruto.

DBZ was removed and not really replaced (the book is just short about 30 pages from where it was), Hikaru No Go, Shaman King, Yu Yu Hakusho and Yu-Gi-Oh fill out the rest of the lineup.

Yeah, it's a younger-market demographic they're aiming at... it's Shonen Jump, not Ultra Jump, and the publishers in the US just haven't acknowledged the market for seinin titles yet, but I think it's merely a matter of time. As it is, I enjoy reading four out of the six titles, and the other two I find to be tolerable toilet reading, so I stand by my mind on this... SJ USA is the best deal in American comics right now (yes, I can see the irony there).

Bwahahaha...

That's hilarious because it is so true.

American superhero comics are really dragging right now.

I've also been picking up the US release since it started and really need to sell off or recycle the suckers as they're taking up alot of room presently, lol. I find that many of the series Viz picked are great at doing the kind of all-ages action/adventure faire that U.S. companies used to do but seem to have forgotten how. And like Inkthinker said it's just a really great buy even if you (like me) don't care for every title present in the mag.

Currently, Shonen Jump is the best in comics on both sides of the seas.

However, I still prefer Young Jump over Shonen just because I enjoy the more adult stories, but I love reading the Japan Shonen Jump if purely for it's double the pages as the U.S. one! I do like the higher paper and ink quality via the U.S. production though, that's really nice. Also, the new Shonen Revolution toting a more punk and goth tone http://jump.shueisha.co.jp/revolution/ is catching on in Japan, and I'm excited to see how the treatment of more advant-garde (and off-beat) manga in the mainstream effects the comic market of Japan.

After all, I'm very proud of them releasing Shojo Beat in the U.S., enabling their women readers, new readers, while respecting the variety of genre, and allowing us more great comics! It doesn't look like Shueisha has any competition stateside.

Pika!
