After the cataclysmic events of Pseudo-literary quiz: disassembled, it's time to re-boot (er... I mean redefine) the concept.

We'll now turn our classic quiz into the JLA of quizzes. The old order changeth! Here's our new line-up of questions!!!

Have fun!

9 a) In Cold Blood- Truman CapoteYup!

14: Been a while since I read it, but: The Dragons of Eden?
Good memory!

15: Fantastic Voyage.
Correct (some people think it's the other way around, the book having been written before the screenplay).

18: Pearls?
I think they do produce pearls, but there are more important economic sectors.
8- Wayne Douglas Barlowe is well-known for his Guide to extraterrestrials. What other guide did he publish in 1996?
Wayne Barlowe's Guide to Fantasy. He also wrote and illustrated an original book called Expedition, a zoological survey of an alien planet.
Very good!
17- Who were the parents of Frodo Baggins?
According to the family tree in the back of 'Return of the King', Drogo Baggins and Primula Brandybuck.
Both drowned, as I recall. An uncommon end for Hobbits.
11- In Asimov's book The gods themselves, what invention may trigger the destruction of ourt solar system?
(a) the proton pump
I thought that sounded good enough to be plausible, but it's not quite the right invention.

12- In the prequel to Asimov's Foundation trilogy, why is there a civil war amongst robots? - One group of robots reasons that covertly guiding mankind's destiny to the best possible outcome is the logical end of the First Law; the other believes it is a violation.
That is correct, and the first group's beliefs are considered the zeroth law that supercedes the other three.

15- What was the first Asimov novel thatwas based on a screenplay? - Fantastic Voyage
Correct, although Shem answered that a little while ago.

17- Who were the parents of Frodo Baggins? - His father was named Drogo; I don't recall his mother's name.
Primula, thanks to whom Frodo is related to Merry.

Bonus question: what is the connection between New Avengers and the first seven questions of the new quiz? - They all reference, either directly or obliquley, a member of the team.
Absolutely correct! And welcome to the quiz, Michael.

Congrats to Blueferret who also figured out the lineup connection.
9- For one point each, who wrote...
(b) A coldness in the blood
Fred Saberhagen
One point!

(c) Cold blood
Theresa Monsour
And another!

13- What is the title of John Byrne's Wonder Woman novel?
Lifelines
Did Byrne write a novel based on his 7-issue run collected under that title?

10- In Jules Verne's SF novel "From the Earth to the Moon", from which US state did the moon explorers take flight in their vehicle (fired by a big gun and not propelled by a rocket)?
Stone Hill, Florida
That's even more than I asked! I liked the fact that Verne got the state right.

18- In the Dune universe, what is the major export product of planet Caladan?
Slaves, I think
No, Caladan was a pretty decent place (being run by the Atreides and all that).

I can't say that the WONDER WOMAN novel was any great shakes. Maybe it had a little more legs than his comic work on the character, but not much.

More Answers:

9d) BLOOD RUNS COLD is by Robert Bloch

35) Who is Myrna Minkoff?

A: A Jewish Heiress from NYC who becomes a beatnik and has a lot of political / philosophical arguments with her pseudo-boyfriend Ingatius Reilly via letters and phone calls throughout the novel. (NOVEL: A CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES)

Roquefort Raider

The Lone ranger gets two points for these answers:
30 - Merchant of Venice
34 - The protagonist of Ulysses,

while Shem the Penman does the same for these:
28: First mate, IIRC.
29: The bishop's bird stump.

Capt Magellan impresses me with his RE Howard knowledge, because he managed to identify dark Agnes on the cover of the book "Sword Woman", eschewing names like Red Sonya of Rogatino, Valeria or even Red Sonja. He also nailed Turlogh O'Brien as the hero of God of Bal-Saggoth and the dark man!

Kirayoshi gets the point for identifying the four titles in the Ringworld series: Ringworld; Ringworld's Engineers; Ringworld's Throne and Ringworld's Children.

Michael Pullman guesses (as does Blueferret, actually) that the neutron pump was the invention threatening the solar system in "The gods themselves", but that was another misdirection on my part. And "the dark stranger" was rejected as a Conan tale, forcing Howard to re-write it as a non-Conan story, thus eliminating the tower of the elephant as its new title.

Bright-Raven concludes this wave of answers with these two:
9d) BLOOD RUNS COLD is by Robert Bloch

35) Who is Myrna Minkoff?
A: A Jewish Heiress from NYC who becomes a beatnik and has a lot of political / philosophical arguments with her pseudo-boyfriend Ingatius Reilly via letters and phone calls throughout the novel. (NOVEL: A CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES)

Thanks for your opinion of the Wonder Woman novel, too. It sort of reflects what I expected.

Not for points obviously, but just for interest: as I'm sure Shem knows, he commited seppuku after taking over a school for boys with his own paramilitary group and exhorting the students to rise up a re-establish a japanese empire, a scene that he seemingly lifted from his own brilliant novel Runaway Horses.

They may lack the scientific spirit in the sense of having a monkeylike curiosity about everything that moves. For that matter, how thoroughly do we study other life forms? Did you ever ask your goldfish for their views on goldfish poetry or politics?"

(b) Finally, a hawk-nosed man sauntered over from another door, and looked in at Gosseyn. He said, with an unmistakeable sneer, "So this is the dangerous man!"
It seemed a futile insult. Gosseyn started to carry on with his examination of the man's physical characteristics, and then the import of the words penetrated. He had been expecting to be asked to get out of the car. Now he settled back in his seat. The idea that he was considered a dangerous man was absolutely new. It didn't seem to have any structural relation to the facts. Gilbert Gosseyn was a trained Null-A whose brain had been damaged by an amnesiac calamity. He might prove worthy of Venus in the games, but he would simply be one of thousands of similarly successful contenders. He had yet to show a single quality of structural difference between himself and other human beings.
"Ah, silence," drawled the big man. "The Null-A pause, I suppose. Any moment now, your present predicament will have been integrated into control of your cortex, and semantically clever words will sound forth."

Hmm... Sounds like Cormac Mac Art. In which case, the Cormac story that bears the most resemblance to "The Dark Stranger" is "Night of the Wolf". But I was under the impression that although certain plot elements and themes are present in both, that "Night of the Wolf" isn't a rewriting.

Unless I'm completely missing the mark on this one ;)

Virginia Woolf Yup!

61: George Santayana.

63: Francis Bacon.

65: The Phoenix Guards and Two Hundred Years After. I think it's actually 500 years later, but why nitpick?

64. Agatha Christie

43 a) Carl Sagan? 64: A not unreasonable guess, because Dame Agatha produced over 80 books. But no, it's not her.
43a: no, not Carl Sagan.

Strangely enough, Cormac Mac Art never starred in a Marvel comic. The closest he came to, as far as I know, was in a pin-up drawn by David Wenzel that appeared in one of the Conan Treasury Editions. So no, it's not Cormac. (The pirate in question is more of a Tales of the Black Freighter character).

You got it!!! The Biff! Whamm!!! Pow!!! Batman movie was indeed novelized by Winston Lyon. (My kids still love that movie, not yet realizing how much of a comedy it is).

And Cookie Monster always deserved an award, as far as I'm concerned.

It will be look'd for, BOOK, when some but see
Thy title, EPIGRAMS, and named of me,
Thou shouldst be bold, licentious, full of gall,

Become a petulent thing, hurl ink, and wit,
As madmen stones ; not caring whom they hit.
Deceive their malice, who could wish it so ;
And by thy wiser temper, let men know

Made from the hazard of another's shame ;
