506) (f) Arsène Lupin
Burglary, mon ami?
Lupin, IIRC, was the famous gentleman thief from turn-of-the-century French pulps. And the grandfather of manga/anime fave Lupin III.

(d) Judith (from the Bible) Wrath. And lots of it. Fuckers deserved it, if you ask me.
I always thought she could also be charged with breach of contract, or at least misrepresentation. Judy went to Holophernes all decked out to party, and essentially told him that she's bang his brains out if he spared the city. He agreed, and instead of going through with the agreement she decapitated him. Oh, sure, Holophernes wasn't the first man to lose his head over a pretty girl, but that was still something of a fraudulent behaviour on her part!

Everything but the whales is right! (Although White Fang is techhnically 3/4 wolf, being the pup of a half-dog half-wolf mom and a full wolf dad).
521. Ilium- Dan Simmons
Yep! I just bought it and can't wait to read it. Why, oh why do we have to work??? Oh, right... so we can afford to buy books.
522. Paladin of Souls- Lois McMasters Bujold
523. "Closing Time" Neil Gaimen
516. The Serpentwar trilogy
Three more good answers.
513. Red Sonja?
Nope!
519- What is the title of the fantasy series written by Greg Keyes, apparently in the tradition of "A song of ice and fire"?
Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone
Another thing that I'd like to read. So many books, so little time...
520- What books comprise the tetralogy "the age of unreason", by the same Greg Keyes?
Newton's Cannon
Calculus of Angels
Empire of Unreason
Shadows of God
That series I read, and it was great!
499. It's been a while since I read The Ship of Ishtar, but ... Kenton?
Wow! What a memory! John Kenton it is. (I would NEVER have remembered it myself if I hadn't picked up the book from the shelf. And even then it didn't ring any bell).
518. D. C. Fontana?
The lady herself!
495- The 1989 book "The Republic of Fear" is about...
(a) North Korea
(b) Iran
(c) Iraq
(d) Pakistan
(e) Chechnya
Iraq.
Correct! I hoped the date would throw people off.
496- Name at least one book written by...
(a) General Tommy Franks
_American Soldier_.
Also right.
497- What phrase precedes the colon in all of these titles:
dadadada da dadadada : Celebrating the Human-Animal Bond in Life and Death
dadadada da dadadada : The Decline of the American Empire at the End of the Age of Oil
dadadada da dadadada : The Shaping of India's New Foreign Policy
dadadada da dadadada : Ronald Reagan and US Policy in the Middle East (Us Foreign Policy and Conflict in the Islamic World)
dadadada da dadadada : Reflections from a Fact-Finding Delegation to Southern Africa, 1987
hint: it has to do with Roman history.
"Crossing the Rubicon"
...the Rubicon where he's said to have uttered his famous "Alea jacta est"!
513- In what comic-book did we eventually hear of Zothique, the imaginary continent created by Clark Ashton Smith?
At a guess, "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen"?
I wouldn't insist on Zothique not being mentioned in the travel guide of LoEG, but I'm pretty sure they don't talk about it in the comic per se. I have another comic in mind.
515- What happened to Earth's animals (including us humans) in Poul Anderson's Brain wave?
After Earth drifted into a part of the universe in which physical laws work differently, they got reeeeeal smart.
An intriguing premise, and I liked how the hero's marriage suffered when his wife realized he had married her for another reason than for her brains!
524- What was Ernest Hemingway's first book?
I had thought it was _The Sun Also Rises_, but I checked before writing this and it seems that's from 1926 and _Three Stories and Ten Poems_ is earliest, from 1923.
I would have said "a farewell to arms" myself. It is indeed Three stories and ten poems.
463- In Ben Bova's Jupiter, what is the name of the ship that goes into the giant planet's atmosphere? Hint: it's a name that was mentioned recently.

513- In what comic-book did we eventually hear of Zothique, the imaginary continent created by Clark Ashton Smith?

A shrine located in Mecca which is the holiest shrine in the Muslim tradition. It is possibly the equivalent of the "Fountain of Youth", as it is a well of "life giving" water, said to be able to sate all hunger and thirst and to have the ability to heal those who drink from it.

The "sons" thing you're talking about is the Riftwar Legacy. You already mentioned the Serpent Wars... there is no other Trilogy or series. There are two other books, called Prince of the the Blood, and The King's Buccaneer, respectively, but they are not part of a series.

Close enough, It is indeed near Mecca, and was caused to appear by the angel Gabriel under the order of God to succor Hagar and Ishmael who were very thirsty. It is interesting that you'd mention the association between female deities and wells (something from the golden bough, perhaps?) since in this case it is Hagar, and not Abraham who is the main character.(c) Richard Cypher - The Seeker of Truth, from Goodkind's Sword of Truth series. No, the fisherman doesn't do much fishing in there (he's repairing an engine).

They don't have to be trilogies.
Here is what we have:
The Riftwar Saga
1. Magician (1982)
2. Silverthorn (1985)
3. A Darkness at Sethanon (1985)
The empire trilogy
1. Daughter of the Empire (1987)
2. Servant of the Empire (1989)
3. Mistress of the Empire (1989)
The serpentwar saga
1. Shadow of a Dark Queen (1994)
2. Rise of a Merchant Prince (1995)
3. Rage of a Demon King (1995)
4. Shards of a Broken Crown (1998)
As for Prince of Blood and the King's buccaneer, they're the ones forming the "Krondor's sons" series (at least as classified by Wikipedia, whatever that's worth).
The series I'm still looking for is set in Midkemia, but at a much later date than the serpentwar.

530 C He was murdered (sacrificed) by his wife, Clytamenestra (sp?) at the end of the Trojan war. In the late myths this was because he had sacrificed their daughter, but in religious practice the king ruled only for a limited period, was ritually murdered and the Queen, the true ruler, then took a new husband.

Dearer than eye-sight, space, and liberty;

A love that makes breath poor, and speech unable;
Beyond all manner of so much I love you.

To make a bondmaid and a slave of me;

Not quite; a more serious book had a bigger influence on the series. It was even mentionned in a lettercol early on.

You presume right. The comic was itself adapted from the movie, which of course strayed far away from the book.

A 2 dimensional construct used to identify the base concepts of politicial ideologies within individuals, dealing with how much you simply believe in the State, and how much you think they function rationally. Hm... technically Edmond's Cyrano de Bergerac is dramatic poetry, not a play, but that's probably what he is most famously known for. If not that, then it'd have to be The Princess Faraway.

549- This is the opening of what novel?
"We sailed from Peru, where we had continued by the space of one whole year, for China and Japan, by the South Sea, taking with us victuals for twelve months; and had good winds from the east, though soft and weak, for five months' space and more. But then the wind came about, and settled in the west for many days, so as we could make little or no way, and were sometimes in purpose to turn back. But then again there arose strong and great winds from the south, with a point east; which carried us up, for all that we could do, toward the north: by which time our victuals failed us, though we had made good spare of them. So that finding ourselves, in the midst of the greatest wilderness of waters in the world, without victual, we gave ourselves for lost men, and prepared for death. Yet we did lift up our hearts and voices to God above, who showeth His wonders in the deep; beseeching Him of His mercy that as in the beginning He discovered the face of the deep, and brought forth dry land, so He would now discover land to us, that we might not perish"

I have no idea, but that question is glossollolia right? If I read all of Grant Morrison's "The Invisibles" in one sitting, down 3 shots of Mezcal, take some mushrooms, and repeat the above question as a mantra over and over again I'll eventually see the face of all creation won't I? ;)

Heh. No, real question. And the answer would be Casaubon. Though I've only read _Rats and Gargoyles_ of those three.
Also:
551- What are the first two titles of what will be the Bartimaeus trilogy, by Jonathan Stroud?
_The Amulet of Samarkand_ and _The Golem's Eye_. The third supposedly to be _Ptolemy's Gate_. Haven't read them but have heard very good things about them.

No, but it was indeed an actor and not an actress.
545- Ancient Greece time! Who won the fight (if anyone did) between the following pairs of opponents?
(e) Patroclus and Sarpedon, king of Lycia
Patroclus won.
Go, Patroclus, go!!!

(d) Theseus

Mmmh... The drama of the poor girl is that Theseus did not marry her but dumped her like yesterday's news! (It was also the source of the feud between Joe Theseus and Bacchus in Eddie Campbell's brilliant comic-book series about the god of the wine).
548- Among these titles, one was NOT written by Immanuel Kant. Which one?
(a) Ethics and the metaphysical nature of Man
It's either that or choice D.
Darn! And here I thought I had come up with a suitably Kantian fake title!
549- This is the opening of what novel?
The New Atlantis by Francis Bacon.
Good call!

Yes, but only if you focus your eyes half an inch behind the text.
Heh. No, real question. And the answer would be Casaubon. Though I've only read _Rats and Gargoyles_ of those three.
Ditto here, actually.
Also:
