182: I *think* Bester dies in or near Geneva, where he was sentenced to and incarcertated for War Crimes, in the same town he grew up in, sometimes referred to as a "teeptown". But I cannot remember if he escaped incarceration after being convicted or not. I do remember he dies in his sleep shortly after John Sheridan dies.

191, number one son!

(that's my second rhyming answer!)

So nothing new under the sun,
but be proud of it, good sir!

I'll let you put up another picture.

155 is Clive Cussler.

You're a life saver... I was fed up attaching that %$# picture!!!
189. Sir Denis Nayland Smith and Dr. Petrie.

Both also featured in Marvel's Master of Kung Fu (which mangled the name of Petrie's wife, though).
187: Glamdring and Orcrist were forged in Gondolin (and I'm just lucky Solaris wasn't around to pick this one up!)

I know what you mean!

186: Son of Tarzan by Burroughs

You got it!

174

(f): Anno-Dracula by Kim Newman
(i): The Cunning Man by Robertson Davies

Both right, and both pretty good books (if in wildly different fields).

He did die in Teeptown; it was a sad ending to a sad life. Keyes wrote a moving tragedy with that trilogy; I'm surprised that books spun off from a TV show could have such depth.

129- Jason Bourne accidentally put a bullet in the head of a famous politician. Who was he?
hint: he's one of the major figures of the XXth century. His name can mean "cat" in a certain language if you pronounce it a certain way, but it's not the Shah (a clever guess by traxler).

130- In which Tor Conan novel does the Cimmerian wage war against his own son?
hint: It's written by Leonard Carpenter. The kid was also Yasmela of Khoraja's son.

174- Please name the story in which the following characters appear:
(a) Frederic Henry and Catherine Barkley

190- Bob Morane is an adventurer who frequently opposes a Fu Manchu-like character; who is he?

192- What was the first book of Mrs. H.P. Blavatsky, founder of the theosophic society?

194- Who wrote the following three books:
The Way to Christ : Spiritual Exercises
Memory and Identity : Conversations at the Dawn of a Millennium

195- What hedonist converted to cathilicism and wrote the classical autobiography "Confessions"?

196- In Jerome K. Jerome's "three men in a boat (to say nothing of the dog)", what is the dog's name?

197- A novel by Sean McMullen tells us of an Etruscan secret society that managed to concoct a potion, the venenum immortale, that allows people to be frozen (à la Captain America) and thawed centuries later. What is its title?

198- What is Giovanni Boccaccio's most famous work, that starts with a description of the effects of the plague?

199- Who is the main protagonist of thomas Mann's Magoc Mountain?

200- What is the name of Catherine L. Moore's famous sword woman?

I liked his "make me virtuous but not just yet" stance.

194. Mr Karol Wojtyla.
I wonder what his internet name might have been.

198. The Decameron.
I'm waiting for the sequels, the undecameron and the dodecameron. (I hear that "Decameron vs Predator" is actually derived from a video game).

199. Hans Catorp Kastorp Cantorp grrrrr..........
Correct! It's Hans Grrrr.

200. Jirel of Joiry.
My copy of her adventures has a cool cover by Philippe Caza. She's an interesting character that could easily be further developed by other media.

Thank you RR. I'll take "Arrogant Colonial Spiritualists" for 100...

"192- What was the first book of Mrs. H.P. Blavatsky, founder of the theosophic society?"

Her first published book was the two volume "Isis Unveiled" almost 11 years before her more famous "Secret Doctrine".

These led to a series of arrogant English nobility taking Indian and other foreign spiritual concepts, and 'improving' upon them by mixing them with their own fancies and Christian viewpoints.

Mao it is. And lest anyone worries, Jason Bourne didn't kill the Chairman; he accidentally lodged a bullet in Mao's mummified body during a shooting exchange in Beijing. That was in "The Bourne Supremacy".

The real world author would be Robert E. Howard. Anyone who wants to read Howard's stab at Lovecraftian style horror should pick up "Nameless Cults" by Chaosium. They collected all his mythos stuff in that book.

Well, you got the answer. Humans were technically dinstinguished in sexually immature (among which one couldn't tell blands from "normal" humans) and sexually mature. Of course, the novel tells us that the whole thing was a farce; "blands" were as human as everyone else but hormonally engineered as a slave race.

I did like the first three books in the Gor series. Sure it was juvenile and sexist, but at 20, I enjoyed it. It was the later books that it just got repetitive and pretty disgussting. I did like the first three books in the Gor series. Sure it was juvenile and sexist, but at 20, I enjoyed it. It was the later books that it just got repetitive and pretty disgussting. I stopped reading the series with The Slave Girl of Gor , even for a series as sexist as Gor was; this book took the cake and thepunch!

What's especially interesting is that the S&M subculture is what's keeping Norman's Gor books in print and is his biggest fanbase.

Weird.

235- Who is the robot who decided the fate of mankind in Asimov's "Robots and Empire"?

Brown? Darn it, I've read that, and that's the only name that comes to mind.

I'd be hard=pressed to remember any name from that book... It's been more than 20 years! (God, I'm old).

236- Before the final "Amen", what is the last sentence in the Bible? (Let's say in the King James version).

"World without End"?

That would have had class!

237- What do Frank Herbert's planet of Pandora and Sharon Shinn's Samaria have in common, theologically speaking?

A human elevated to God-status?
Not quite.
235- Who is the robot who decided the fate of mankind in Asimov's "Robots and Empire"?
- R. Daneel Olivaw.
Daneel assumed the role of shepherd for humanity, but he's not the one who pushed the fatal button (or pulled the fatidic lever, I forget).
239. (a) Thongor, barbarian swordsman
Correct; that title is actually from the Khotar series by Gardner F. Fox.

237. A planet and people controlled by a computer that is worshipped like God.
Yes, the Herbert god-ship was simply called Ship, and the Shinn one was Jovah.
238. Behold the Man.
or Ecce homo, as they used to say!

240. The Gor series -- which I wouldn't call Burroughs-esque so much as I'd call it boring and obsessive. (Incidentally, does anyone know if Marvel stole the idea of "Counter-Earth" from Norman, or was it the other way around?)
The idea of Counter-earth was around before both; although I do not know where it originated from, I remember seeing an old movie where an astronaut traveled to a counter-earth where everything was the same as here, but reversed (in an enantiomeric sense, not a Bizarro-world sense).

241- This trilogy (or rather, series of three books with a related theme) covers the history of mankind, but following intellectual achievements instead of political of military events. What was the name of its American writer, and what are the titles of the books? (One point for each answer).

I believe you're speaking of Daniel Boorstin's "The Creators", "The Seekers" and "The Discoverers."

263- What books are these situations the premise to?

(b) They live among us: they're able to change shape, they're long-lived, but are weakened or killed by sunlight. When an alien species conquers earth, it's all one can do to disguise his special status until he meets a kindred soul from the stars.

263 (c) There is a resonable explanation, but there are people among us who can change shapes and become invisible creatures of darkness (like wolves or sabertooth tigers, for example). How will an alcoholic Will Barbee react to the slow discovery that he may be one of them?

You are quite right, sir. And a pretty good series it is, too.

Yep! Quite supersticious, butdefinitely not a barbarian as far as Conans go.

Believe it or not, of that entire list only dark destiny doesn't exist. Star wars writers like the adjective "dark" so much that they're giving the TOR Conan series a run for its money as the worst-titled books in pop culture.
270. Carthage
271. SPQR. Don't go there.
Is it that bad? I read one novel (not an SPQR) by Roberts and it was a bit amateurish.

219. So, it's a heavy thing you might find on a farm in the south of France.

A large bit of tractor?

A writer's block?

The first two would fit right in with the spirit of the book, but no. It's heavier than both and even simpler.
273. Into the Out Of?
Yes. That's a nice little book, quite unlike many run-of-the-mill supernatural adventures out there.
