On a recent episode of The O.C., there was a startling tribute to the excellent Spider-man movie. The lead writer on the show is also the writer of Young Avengers, and he frequently inserts comic reference in the dialogue of Seth, one of the main characters in The O.C.

It's raining hard in southern California (much like real world recently), and comic book fan Seth Cohen is depressed because his ex-girlfriend Summer is about to take a romantic vacation to Italy with her new boyfriend who is also a friend of Seth's. Lacking proper raingear, Seth dons a rubber Spider-man mask to visit Summer just before her trip, to make a last-ditch attempt to win her back. It doesn't work, and she soon leaves for the airport.

Seth tries another phone call, and that doesn't work either, and then kind of loses his mind, especially when the sattelite dish malfunctions, leaving him both broken-hearted and bored. At the end of the episode, he is climbing up on the roof in the pouring rain, wearing the Spider-man mask and blue clothes, to tie a rope to the chimney. It's not clear if he's playing Spider-man to fix the sattelite dish or if he's going to hang himself. Then he loses his footing, sliding down the roof top. One end of the rope is tied to the chimney while the other end is tied around his waist, leaving him hanging upside down about five feet above ground.

Summer gets very cold feet at the airport and abandons her boyfriend, apologizing profusely. She takes a cab over to Seth's house and finds him hanging upside down. As the rain continues to pour down, she peels back part of his Spider-man mask and kisses Seth passionately as the episode ends.

You know, it's a guilty pleasure, but I enjoy the OC. I got into it cuz of Alan Heinberg.

Im only about 19 so its acceptable for me to like it haha. I also never knew Josh Schwartz wrote young avengers, I always just thought he knew alot about comics. There was one episode where Seth met Rachel's dad, and he had a good minute of talking about Bendis and I was like wow, Josh Schwartz really knows his stuff.

Its funny because if you dont read comics, so many people would never pick up on the dialouge.

And I think that episode was just amazing, probably one of the best episodes I have ever seen for like any show ever!

I like the show, especially the comic book bits, however I was stunned they did that. Why? Because its a WB show, and the writers are not even allowed to mention Marvel comics in the script. If you watch the episodes, you see they only talk about DC comics or heroes, although they do mention Bendis by name, he is a creator so I guess DC let that slide. So, to see a re-enactment of a huge Marvel movie caught me by surprise, although I definetly enjoyed it.

Part of my believes that the script called for Seth to be wearing "a rubber halloween mask" so that they could just insert the Spidey mask during filming and the execs could do nothing short of re-taping all those scenes($$$).

The OC is airing on the Fox station here in the Twin Cities, not on the WB. Also, The OC lacks that production line sameness that all the WB teen dramas have, and gives plenty of screen time to the middle-aged cast members, so I don't think that it's a WB show. Besides, last night's episode there was a Fantastic Four reference. In general, though, it does seem like there are a lot more DC and independent references than Marvel.

It's Allan Heinberg, who's a comics fan and the writer of the Young Avengers, not Josh Schwartz. Allan Heinberg even appeared on fanboy radio a couple of days ago. Check out www.fanboyradio.com

While I'm liking Young Avengers... this sounds really forced, corny even.

Could just be me.

Josh Schwatz wrote that episode and is the creator and head writer of The OC.

Allen Heinsberg is his right hand man, and the current writer of Young Avengers.

Two different people.

Could just be me.It felt a little forced to me. I mean, the moment with the two getting back together was great, but the Spider-Homage? Not really.

Seth sounds like the sort of person who would get his ass kicked in high school.

I guess I was wrong, but why then are they not allowed to mention Marvel titles? I have a Wizard with an interview with one of the people involved in the show(I forget who) and they specifically mention that they are only allowed to show DC books.

Bingo. One shocking and original aspect of this show was that Seth and his new best friend got their asses kicked nearly every week for the first several episodes in season 1. Sometimes his tough pal Ryan got a good first punch in and even won a couple of fights, but that was still a whole lotta fighting for what some people think of as a primetime soap.

That's probably the lamest thing I've heard in a month. I hate the OC
