This last Saturday, I went to the Chicagolandz Comic & Toy Show. I'll probably post comments on the show itself at the Oddball board, but thought I'd list what I got here.
Here's what I got In the order I bought it, with a few comments.
First purchases were from a dealer who had three long boxes of Silver Age (although some were early Bronze) books marked down to $2. I've also listed the price he had marked on them.
KULL #1 ($8)
KULL #2 ($5)
KULL #7 ($4)
KULL #8 ($12)
KULL #12 ($6)
FALLING IN LOVE #67 ($10)
HEART THROBS #89 ($14)
HEART THROBS #90($14) 8 page Romita story, and cover
SHOWCASE #50 ($15) I already have a copy of this, but it has a stripped cover
These books' asking price total was $88, and my cost was $18.
At the next dealer, I got a copy of WEIRD WORLDS #10 for $2.
The next dealer had three books I bought: DAREDEVIL #1--$160 ($200 asking price), 77 SUNSET STRIP (Gold Key) #1, and ADVENTURES OF JERRY LEWIS # 86. Thes books were marked $30 and $8 respectively, and I got them for $25. Asking price total-$238, I paid $185. I've finally completed my DAREDEVIL collection, although I would trade this copy in on a better one if the occasion ever arises.
Next, I bought a Fine copy of CHALLENGERS OF THE UNKNOWN # 11. It was marked $76 dollars, but all comics at this dealer were 1/2 price so it was $38. This is a beautiful Bob Brown/Jack Adler wash cover. Here's a link:
www.comics.org/graphics/covers/1293/400/1293_4_11.jpg
Then I came to a dealer that was selling all books marked
$24 or less for $5, and 20% off books marked $25 and up (I don't know what he was selling books marked $5 and under for.) I bought the following for $5 each (the last two weren't marked, but he sold them for $5.)
SECRET HEARTS #111 ($8)--15 page Colan story, and cover.
SEA DEVILS #10 ($20)--Heath/Adler wash cover
SEA DEVILS #12 ($9)
SEA DEVILS #24
SEA DEVILS # 34
Total asking price for the first three was $37, I paid $15.
Next, I got three books from another dealer.
MAVERICK #16 VG--$16
TOMAHAWK # 89 VG--$8
KULL #4--VG $4
I've been looking for the TOMAHAWK for years. He appears to meet a giant ancestor of the Floronic Man:
www.comics.org/graphics/covers/705/400/705_4_089.jpg
Finally, I bought a book I first learned of about 20 years ago. This is the first one I've ever SEEN, and since it adapts one of my favorite novels and films, I had to get it. And what might this be?
FEATURE BOOK #48. It's from 1946, and is an adaptation of THE MALTESE FALCON. This cost me $100. Take a look:
www.comics.org/graphics/covers/93/400/93_4_048.jpg
So that's what I got. Hopefully, I'll have time for a few more comments later.

Nice Haul CJ. I love those greytone Sea Devils covers myself.
Can you do me a favor? Take a look through the Kulls you just bought and see if this image is in any of them. ROK and some others on the board have narrowed this down to Kull 2-9. If you find it you will have my unending thanks as this is the last 1975 slurpee cup I have yet to ID. Thanks regadless.

I thought about that. I'll try to get to it tomorrow. I also picked up a couple of other KULLs last fall, so I may have more in the range you're seeking.
I'm trying to put together a list of all the DC wash covers, using the GCD. You'd be amazed at some of the places they show up. So far, I've only found two super-hero covers (unless you count the Sea Devils, COTU, and Space Ranger, which I don't.)
I was also surprised to find wash covers on some ACG books. A moonlighting Jack Adler?
Late addition--found a third super hero wash cover.

The DC superhero wash covers that I know about are B&B#44, Green Lantern #8, Detective #239 and I think Showcase #25 also. Do you know of any more?
Thanks for any help you can provide with the Kull pic. I really appreciate it! :D

Good haul! The item I'm most jealous of is SECRET HEARTS #111 ($8)--15 page Colan story, and cover.
Just checked this out on the GCD, and I think I have this issue. Omit the jealousy.

Hey CJ;
Be sure to include Monsters on the Prowl #16 as part of your Kull comics hunt.
Kull 1 & 2, Conan #10 (although it just has an REH poem about Kull - no continuity), Monsters on the Prowl #16, then Kull #3 onward...
If Marvel had stayed with the 52 page format longer, Kull would have remained within the umbrella of the Conan comic title for a longer period of time. Since they abandoned that format so quickly, they decided to run Kull in Monsters, which they did for one whole issue. Then because Conan's sales were doing so well, and they had the returns back from Kull 1 and 2, which were also very healthy, they returned Kull to full book status, on a bi-monthly basis.
It's an odd history, especially since Kull's first Marvel appearance was in Creatures on the Loose.
I remember reading somewhere, probably on the Bullpen's Pages about Kull #1 being one of Roy Thomas' favorite stories that he had a hand in penning. While I love that issue, I really enjoyed the Thulsa Doom story arc (2,16 and 3) even more.
For sheer nastiness, Thulsa would be in my top list of villians. He was pure wickedness.
This run of Kull is some of the best visual story-telling ever done. Great supporting cast, great pacing, strong sense of mood. These comics are underappreciated, and should get more attention. Top-Notch! Comes with my highest recommendations.

Just curious about what other people are buying as I sift about in the quarter-50 cent-dollar boxes...

Just curious about what other people are buying as I sift about in the quarter-50 cent-dollar boxes...I think that's my cue...
Here's what I picked up at the semi-annual Portland Comic Book Show on Sunday:
-Spectacular Spider-Man #1 - the b&w magazine from 1968. I've had #2 forever, but never thought I'd find an affordable copy of #1. It was marked $14 but he knocked a few bucks off.
-Sundance Kid #2, from Skywald - I got this for the Simon & Kirby reprint in the back, but the new story is not bad either - Wein/Ayers/Tartaglione.
-Fast Willie Jackson #1 - a black Archie ripoff from the 70s. How odd can you get?
-Jimmy Olsen #145 - the last Kirby issue that I didn't have. I have almost everything he did at DC in the 70s except the war books and the large-format magazines - and I'm going to look for those next.
-Warlock #14 - filling a hole that's been in my collection since 1977.
-Dr. Strange #24 - ditto.
-Power Man #48 - ditto.
And a trio of odd vocational-counseling giveaway comics:
-Popeye and Public Service Careers
-Popeye and Business and Office Careers
-Popeye and Personal Service Careers
These were part of a 15-issue series published by King Features with the editorial and printing by Charlton. They all have the King Comics logo, covers by George Wildman, and scripts by Joe Gill; the artists are Frank Roberge, Tony DiPreta, and Tony Tallarico. They feature Popeye, Olive Oyl, Swee'pea, Wimpy, Brutus and O.G. Wotasnozzle describing various career fields. Oddest of all, they have Popeye speaking correct English! It might as well not be Popeye. I yam disgustipated. ;-)
I also picked up another vocational-counseling item - a 1973 book designed for elementary-school kids, titled "I Want to be a Computer Operator". For $1, how could I pass it up? Everyone here at the office thinks it's hysterical.
All of this, including the book, was less than $40.

...how much did you pay for that magical haul? Do you get the feeling prices are down for a lot of this post-1970 material?I think it added up to $38. I couldn't say whether prices are down; I haven't been doing this long enough. I've only been back in fandom for a couple of years.

I think in a post-eBay world, it's fair to generalize that prices are down because people see how much of almost everything is available. There are always key issues, top condition books, scarce anomalies, and current hot issues, but overall it's pretty hard to get as much as the price guides indicate.

Thanks again for the help CJ. After the research done by CJ-apparently the Kull cup art is not from the Kull comic book series. It may be from Kull and the Barbarians Mag or hsi apearance in Monsters on the Prowl. I also heard that it may be on the inside front cover of the 1983 Kull series but that would be a reprinting of the art and not the original source.

-Spectacular Spider-Man #1 - the b&w magazine from 1968. I've had #2 forever, but never thought I'd find an affordable copy of #1. Looked thru this magazine the other night. The main story is by Lee/Romita/Mooney, and it's as gorgeous as you would expect it to be. But the real revelation here was the backup story - a retelling of Spidey's origin, scripted of course by Stan, drawn by Larry Lieber and inked by Bill Everett! I'd never even heard of this version of the story before! The black & white Lieber/Everett artwork looks really nice. Stan & Larry are doing the Spider-Man Sunday newspaper strip now; this story was probably their first collaboration on the character - thirty-seven years ago.

Just to clarify, I checked issues 2-5, 7, 8 of the Severins' run. Also, just for the heck of it, I checked issues 1 and 12, the only other ones I have. So 6 and 9 need to be checked. 10 and 11 also, but those weren't by both Severins.
I did mention to METAROG that the crown worn in the issues I checked looked quite different from the one worn by Kull on the Slurpee cup.
UPDATE---I see on the original thread that ROK had checked issue 10 (Marie Severin & Frank Chiaramonte), and issue 11 is a Mike Ploog issue.

I was going thru some stuff I've got stored on the computer, and came across one more thing I bought at the convention way back in 2005 when I first started this thread.
It's a sketch I had done by Bill Reinhold of Batman and The Badger. You can see it here:

One other thing--------does anyone here want me to post other lists like the one at the beginning of this thread? I've got lists of other "hauls" from the last couple of years.

I totally agree with you. Take, for example, IN THE DAYS OF THE MOB. This JK b&w mag appeared to be incredibly scarce at one point. My LCS has a decent copy priced at $100, which was pretty much the going rate.
Now, eBay has multiple copies for about $25 or less. Mile High must have found a warehouse stash, as they have literally dozens of copies up for sale. Even the highest grade issues of this title are very affordable. The huge number of copies of this "scarce" item wasn't apparent until the advent of eBay.
I'm an ardent bargain hunter. I've found that patience is a great virtue when it comes to paying less for what I want.

I just found the biggest haul of my young life: My friend tells me he's clearing a bunch of crap out of his room and asks me if I want all the old comics that used to belong to his grandmother. I know a lot of them are kind of valuable, but he tells me he doesn't care. So I get hundreds of late Seventies and Eighties comics for $20. Here's the big list:
Action Comics 476-477, 480-489
Adventure Comics 454, 456-481, 483, 485-490
Amazing Spider-Man 176-177
Avengers 161
Conan the Barbarian 81-116, 118-153
Devil Dinosaur 1, 3-9
Fantastic Four 189-224, 226-239
Flash 258-267
Green Lantern 115-144, 148-171
Hanna-Barbera's Laff-A-Lympics 1
Invaders 24-41
John Carter, Warlord of Mars 22-28
Kamandi, The Last Boy on Earth 55-59
Machine Man, The Living Robot 1, 3-9
Man from Atlantis 2
Mighty Thor 267-339
New Adventures of Superboy 27-44
Plastic Man 19
Power Man 48-95
Shogun Warriors 15-20
Spider-Man Adventures 10
Spider-Woman 1, 4-38, 40-50
Star Wars 21-44
Superhero Book of Goodies 2
Uncanny X-Men 141-183
Warlord 11-44, 46-81
Wonder Woman 240-249
My brain was on overload.

Be careful when reading those Conan's, I beilve that first batch is is the end of Roy Thomas' run. You may get hooked.
Otherwise old Perez FF's I think, always a good read. I liked the story arc that leads to 200, and those Warlords look like they're all Mike Grell issues, so that's real nice too.
Overall that's a good lot of books.

Rachel Summers from Uncanny X-Men #141-142 comes to the present mainstream Marvel Universe Earth with Uncanny X-Men #184, pursued by Selene, the Black Priestess, an immortal mutant who feeds on the lifeforce of her victims.
