VERTIGO TRADES LIST (as of 3/2005)

This is an exhaustive list of Vertigo trades and the issues they contain.
I've tried to get them all, but I'm sure I might have missed something, and new ones should be added. So if anything is wrong, please correct.

Regular series are listed alphabetically. Miscellaneous mini series not directly connected with a regular series are listed at the end. OGNs are generally not included except to identify them separate from the regular trades.

Title header is followed by relevant series information--the different
series and the number of issues they contain. The brief series series info isn't all inclusive, but is meant for reference in deciphering what issues are contained in a trade book. Currently ongoing series list the latest known issue number that is known to actually be released, usually up until May.

You're right. I was counting off the series numbers from the available trades and the 3rd series was never collected. I've corrected and added the series info.

I did a little more digging and here are the series (not including OGN or single issue specials) I found for Swamp Thing:

Series 1: Swamp Thing. 24 issues (1972-76)
Series 2: Saga of the Swamp Thing #1-38.
Renamed to Swamp Thing #39-171
(1982-96)
Series 3: Swamp Thing. #1-20 (2000-2001)
Series 4: Swamp Thing. currently ongoing at #15 (2004- )

Misc. series:
Roots of the Swamp Thing. #1-5 mini-series
Essential Vertigo: Swamp Thing. #1-24.

What about:

Unknown SoldierHmmm...didn't run across it on any of the Vertigo lists I initially went through.
Did a little more digging and apparently it had a really big run. I tried to include all this in the list, but apparently I exceed the 10,000 character limit for a message so I'll post the details here.

UNKNOWN SOLDIER
Series 1: First appearing in Star Spangled War Stories #151-204 (1970-1977)
Renamed to The Unknown Soldier #205-268 (1977-1982)
Series 2: #1-12 (1988-1989)
Series 3: #1-4 mini-series. Published under Vertigo logo. (1997)]

Unknown Soldier TB (Collects the 4-issue mini-series).

Nope - Morrison did 26 issues plus a story in Secret Origins, which are collected in the 3 trades. The next 6 issues were a fantastic story by Peter Milligan which deserves to be collected too.

It goes downhill after that

Let me step in and defend Delano's run. He took over after the Tom Veitch run that followed Milligan (which was pretty lightweight, but featured cool Steve Dillon art). This was six months before the Vertigo launch, and DC switched the title to Mature Readers so Delano could tie up loose ends and prepare for the switch to Vertigo. His run was wild and over the top, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The Prosser run which followed it until the title ended was truly bad, IMO.

Delano's run had it's moments, particularly in the earlier part of his run, but it got very silly by the end. Even at its best though it wasn't up there with Morrision and Milligan's runs

Volume 0 is a series of columns written by Spider Jerusalem which could be written almost anywhere during the run. It really doesn't matter when or if you read this.

And that is all there is, sadly.

Some others:

Neil Gaiman's Midnight Days, collecting Swamp Thing Annual #5, Hellblazer 27, and Sandman Midnight Theatre

Skreemer, collecting the Skreemer mini-series 1-6 by Milligan and Ewins

Deadenders: Stealing the Sun collecint the first four issues of Deadenders plus a short story from Vertigo: Winter's Edge III, Deadenders ran for 18 issues written by Brubaker.

Scene of the Crime, collecting the Scene of the Crime miniseries 1-4 by Brubaker, Lark and Phillips.

Terminal city, collecting the Terminal City miniseries 1-9 by Motter and Lark

When I go home, I'll check my shelves for any others.

After the Dangerous Habits trade, the powers that be at Vertigo (stupidly) saw fit to cash in on the popularity of Preacher by jumping straight to the Steve Dillon issues. They've never gone back to fix this since

Others would disagree with me, but in the case of Delano and Jenkins I'd say they weren't collected because they're not that great. The Ennis stuff is stupidity on Vertigo's part.

As for Papa Midnight, that's recent. Mosts comics that come out these days are collected, but for older comics it's less of a given.

I like Delano's first trade.

But is the Jenkins stuff really that bad that it doesn't deserve a trade, or wouldn't sell as a trade?

I read the Hellblazer story he had in the first Winters Edge and quite liked it.
I also read issue #120 where John took the reader on a tour of London and that was quite enjoyable.

I like the Jenkins run pretty well, especially the first two-thirds or so while Sean Phillips was the artist. I'd say it's definitely worth collecting, and has an undeservedly bad reputation. I finally gave up on them being given the TPB treatment, and fortunately they can be had pretty cheaply as back issues. The Delano run, OTOH, is fairly pricey. I've enjoyed the scattered issues I've read, but I don't know how well the run would read as a whole.

Yeah, about two weeks or so ago. I already picked it up; it's not bad I guess, but I'll probably never read it again. (PM me if you want to work out a trade or a deal.)

I got about halfway through last week, but just haven't picked it back up since (to be fair though, I have been working and caught up in a book).

It's alright, but far from great.

But is the Jenkins stuff really that bad that it doesn't deserve a trade, or wouldn't sell as a trade?

It's not all that bad. If it was coming out now it would probably be collected, but older stuff doesn't get collected as much as current stuff

No, Last Castle was a "Prestige Format" One-shot, which puts it somewhere inbetween a single issue comic and what is traditionally labeled as an OGN. Amazon almost never has Prestige Format comics listed. It's collected in the March of the Wooden Soldiers TPB.

Come to think offit..maybe some guy can you know put stars(*) or somn to kinda like represent it as a MUST READ or a MUST HAVE kinda thing you know.

It's just a suggestion tho. hahaha.

JTLauder

I try to keep it updated, though I can't really say for how much longer as my interest in comics has waned quite a bit. But I should still be following Vertigo for a while longer. You can know how recently the list was updated by date near the top of the web page.

You asking for some kind of recommendation indicator on the list itself?

I'm not going to do that because it's too subjective. Such as lots of people like Preacher, and I absolutely hated it. Everyone has different tastes and like different things, and while there are some classic Vertigo titles, there really isn't anything absolutely crucial to read before enjoying another Vertigo title. Besides, I haven't read ALL Vertigo books to even make a personal recommendation as to which ones are definitely better than others.

Sometimes trades are not numbered, or they don't collect all issues or in order. I started the list for myself to sort through the confusion because I kept forgetting which trades contained which issues, such as Hellblazer. I thought others might benefit from such an inclusive list, so I put it on the web. The point of the list is to just list out all the trades in order and what issues they contain so you know what to look for if you want to buy them.

Well, some of it is, and some of it isn't.

I.e. Delano's run - from what I've seen, worth it

Ennis's run - except for Son of Man, more than worth it

Ellis - yup

Azzarello - just get Hard Time and stop there

I scrolled around to find an open thread already for some suggestions, but I guess I'll just post my question here rather than starting a new thread.

What are some good trades to pick up for some newer Vertigo titles that have come out for more recent titles you liked? I don't have anything in mind really. I like vertigo for the fact I can open a title I normally wouldn't read and find myself pleasantly surprised. Currently, I'm all caught up on Fables, Y, Preacher, 100 Bullets, and Scalped, and have also collected bits of Jack of Fables, Northlanders.

Are there any good story arcs for more recent titles you would rec for some series that have come out recently? I'm not real picky about genre, I just like good writing.

Thanks in advance.

DMZ

The Unwritten

Thank you. I picked up DMZ and its first few arcs. I love that book now, and have almost gotten caught up with singles. Great premise and one that bears some very real political mirroring in it's writing for the US, in a provocative fashion. Mattie Roth is kind of like the everyman guy who gets caught up in the bigger scheme of things, and his struggle and documentation of what he deals with is what I'm a sucker for in story.

I picked up the first few issues of Unwritten, and can't say it really floats my boat initially. Neither did Fables, but like all hell if that series didn't grow on me the more I read it down the line.

thanks for the recs.

No problem.

I think my favorite DMZ volume would be number four. Number seven came out a few weeks ago, but haven't had the chance to read it yet. Scalped vol 5 also just came out.

I liked Fables from the start, but I can see how it has to grow on certain people. The story took a couple of trades to really solidify itself into what it is today.

Didn't Mark Buckingham also start drawing Fables in vol. 2? I remember thinking that the art had gotten significantly better.

this list is really awesome, especially for the older stuff - just sent me on a search to find Witchcraft and Mythos - I didn't even KNOW about those.

I see that it's pretty out of date and a lot of people have been offering additions here and asking about newer stuff. I'm going to have a vertigo universe (http://www.tradereadingorder.com/list/vertigo-universe/) listing at my site, but that won't be including the self contained (http://www.tradereadingorder.com/list/self-contained/) books, which will be in a separate section. Hopefully that will help some of you - I'm adding in a lot now, but I'll come back and make another note when it's totally up to date.

Hellblazer is being reprinted staring in March

The very first Hellblazer collection is back in a new edition that includes John Constantine's early appearances in SWAMP THING #76-77 along with HELLBLAZER #1-9. This is the first of a series of new HELLBLAZER collections that put all his adventures in reading order, capturing Constantine at his youthful, anarchic best.

Good news about the Hellblazer trades.
I think I may have to stop buying the Fables Deluxe Edition. Usually I buy Deluxe Editions because it combines two trades into one book and costs about the same price but in the larger, longer lasting format. With Fables however B. Willingham writes very long storylines and it seems that DC and Vertigo don't want to combine two Fables trades together because it would be too many issues. So they hike up the price of a fifteen dollar trade to thirty dollars. It's just not worth it to me, especially with the paltry four or so pages of sketches they also put in. They should look to the Y the Last Man Deluxe EDitions which give plenty of value for the price.

1988, I think, but technically it's tendrils stretch back further. As you can see on this list (http://www.tradereadingorder.com/character/hellblazer/), Hellblazer kind of starts in Swamp Thing. I think those issues may be included in the new collections.

Sandman started in 1989. The first trade, Preludes, contains a Constantine appearance.

I know there's already a recent Lucifer thread going, but I didn't want to derail it since this isn't really related to that posters topic. That said...

I was digging around Amazon and noticed that vols. 6, 8, and 9 appear to be out of print. In addition, the other volumes all say "Only (x) copies left in stock - order soon". Anyone see/hear anything about Vertigo releasing new editions of these? I know many here are clamoring for hardcovers, could they be on the way?

This is one of the few Vertigo series based on DCU characters that I haven't read in its entirety, and was just about to dive into the trades until I saw this. No use in tracking down out of print books if new editions are about to pop up...

i'm not sure if i should get the new HC:

SAGA OF THE SWAMP THING BOOK 5

Continuing the hardcover collection of master comics writer Alan Moore's award-winning run on SAGA OF THE SWAMP THING with issues #51-56, this volume begins as Swamp Thing returns from his journey to hell, only to learn that his girlfriend Abby is being persecuted for their "unnatural relations." When she skips town for Gotham City, he follows and runs afoul of Batman, Lex Luthor and the Gotham City Police Department.
168pg

or just the plain ol' trade:

SWAMP THING VOL.5: Earth to Earth

Returned from his sojourn to hell, Swamp Thing discovers that his girlfriend Abby is being persecuted for their "unnatural relations". When she skips town for Gotham City, he follows and runs afoul of Batman, Lex Luthor, and the Gotham City P.D.
154pg

Content seems to be the same ( both collect issues 51-56).
Can anyone help me making my decision?

Currently I am reading Sandman...between the books mentioned above, there is a heaven and hell connection...right? Ok, the first series I read was Lucifer...which I don't remember clearly what happened in the end. I remember Preacher where that gunslinger shot God() in the end. My problem area is that I don't get what happens to earth/god/humans.etc after the war. This may be a SPOILER to others, so you can message me incase that happens.
