View Full Version : HAWKMAN - what should I read first?

I just recently started getting into Hawkman. Not the monthly, but the character. Mostly from reading old Green Arrow comics.

So, if I'm in my local comic shop, scanning the back issues... what are some good issues/runs to pick up? Are they any issues that are particularly better for jumping on than others? I love Geoff Johns, so I may just grab a random pile that he wrote.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Get the 2 tpbs. There will be a third in May and Black Reign will be out in July. You might want to get issues 28-the present.

It's kinda messy, continuity-wise, but Hawkworld is a great mini series, three issues long if I'm not mistaken. Worth searching out in the back issue bins (I'm not sure there's a trade for it.)

Thanks for the input. Trades are probably as good a place to start as any. The first few Johns issues were $5 or $6 each -- a bit steep for a title I've never read before.

Getting into Hawkman can be getting into a continuity quagmire. I personally found Geof Johns' introduction to the first trade of Hawkman very helpful in understanding this complex character.

I would say get the JSA-Return of Hawkman trade along with the trades of the Johns run.

Does the JSA-Return trade take place before or after the Johns run?

Before. The JSA arc preceded the current HAWKMAN series.

There was a trade paperback of the HAWKWORLD miniseries. I bought a copy for a friend as a birthday gift some years back. As I recall, the cover showed an armed Hawkman amidst other citizens of Hawkworld.

Mile High Comics doesn't show the cover scan, and is currently out of stock on the back-issue of the trade.

The trade may not still be in print, as HAWKWORLD doesn't show up on this official list over at DC Comics.

The Hawkman series is great. He might be the only character in the DCU to rival Batman in terms of knowlege and being a prick. The JSA Return of Hawkman is a must!

I'd check eBay for Hawkworld. That and Return of Hawkman and you're set to begin! Oh, and for fun just try searching out the Who's Who in the DC Universe that has the Hawk members in it. Just because it's got entries for both Hawkmans, Hawkwoman and Hawkgirl.

Anytime I can plug Who's Who I go for it.

If you haven't seen them yet, there are some Silver-Age Hawkman materials to look at right here at CBR, via Oddball Comics. I know they're not hard copies, but, hey, they're free. ;)

You cruel man! I wouldn't use the word you used. But I have to agree. Very similar to Batman. I've just started picking up the series and I'm already in love. Palmiotti & Bennette are amazing!

THE GOLDEN AGE. Not only is it one of the top-five superhero stories of all-time, but it also helped set the tone for the current incarnation of Hawkman. The final chapter has the most awesome description of Hawkman ever written. I'm loathe to quote the scene and spoil the thrill of reading it in context, but I will say it involves Hawkman crawling out of a pile of bodies ...

Like others have said, the JSA: The Return of Hawkman TPB is a good place to start.

Scott Tipton over at MoviePoopShoot.com did an excellent 3-part column on Hawkman that anyone new to the character might want to check out.

You and I seem to be in the same boat. I only recently bought my first copies of Hawkman. I'd suggest starting where I did, with issue #34 of the current run. That will get you up to speed with what's going on now. You can always go back and get the older issues.
