I just picked up GA Long Bow Hunter off of ebay and was wondering how everyone who has read it would rate it. I'm not wanting spoilers, I'm just wanting to hear everyone's opinion of the book. Thanks

The Long Bow Hunters was a great series by Mike Grell. I highly recommend it. If I remember correctly it was one of the first prestige series after Dark Knight.

i hope you've never read it is y you're asking this question...your question is almost like asking if the bible mentions god ...lol...get it now...in either trade or single issue..it is the best, most unique, deathless, no messing around with the core essence of the character evolution of a hero story every written in comics most likely..surely for dc...laters! :) :p

After you read it there is a good chance you will end up picking up some of the Grell issues of the last Green Arrow series. It is that good, and the series is almost as good at least for the first few years.

I think Butcher was a Mike Baron creation that crossed over with Grell's GA. :p

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I was wondering about the quality of the writing and artwork because of how cheap I actually won the set for.

You would have to have paid a majorly exhorbitant price to have gotten ripped off on this one, man.
It's a great book.

I read it for the first time not long ago. Really great book with some terrific art.
And I think Shado ended up with Ollie's baby, didn't she? Maybe I'm off on that.

I loved it but some of the fans of the original GA stories hated the much darker tone.

If it wasnt for Grell though I'd never have bothered with Smiths reboot.

if it wasn't for Smith's reboot, i'd never have bothered looking out Grell's.
Kind of ironic, since the formers just not that good, imo.

Late getting here but I wanted to add my 2 cents . Grell's Green Arrow is what ultimately made me a fan of the character . He aged him . He put fear of growing old , of being alone into the character ..something I'd never really seen done up to that point . Making Ollie see he was a grandfather of sorts to Roy's kid .....
I also liked how he made Ollie more an urban hunter .
Plus Grell's lush paints were breathtaking back then , before the Alex Ross' began churning out . But hell ... Grell's work still dazzles me .
Hope you liked the series .

And again thanks everyone for your opinions.

No, not at all.
I know a little about what happens but I have just recently began to get an interest in Green Arrow and decided this might be a good place for me to start.

Absolutely agree. Jon Sable, Freelance is an outstanding book. I liked Longbow Hunters quite a bit and the first two or three years of the ongoing. While you're in Grell mode you need to hit Warlord.

Not to mention that this is when Ollie gave up "trick arrows" for the real thing.

In my honest opinion, it's the best Green Arrow story to date. It also has some excellent Mike Grell art in it.

I think Mike Grell really knew the charactor so well. He knew where to take Oliver Queen and its sadly since he left the book , the direction has taken bad turns. Kevin Smith did a good arc or 2. But Winick seemingly has looked at Smith's run and checkmarked facin Demons and Monsters twice and super villains.
Love to see a more urban Green Arrow again. Dido rehire Mike Grell damn it.

For it's time it is one of the best comicstories.
And the following GA series is good too at least half of it.
I like that he began using real sharp arrows and could kill someone sometimes.
And like others have said, i like that he was not 29 something, but in the late 40s.
Grell even tried ditch GA's mask, but people forced him to take it back.
I think that was good too, not following the satndard rules of superheros, mask, secret identity, no killing etc.
That made my like starman from the late 90s too.
So give GA's Longbow Hunters a chance, in 87 it was not much that was this good.

She did, and Ollie found out later.
Last time we saw Shado was when she got the message that Ollie had died.
And so died Grells Green Arrow...........
But Grell had left the book 20 issues earlier and the book bacame more and more standard superhero comic 1A.

Just wanted to add to the praise everyone's been giving to Green Arrow: TLH. This is easily one of the best comics of the 80's.
The ongoing series was also very good during the Grell years.
As for Jon Sable, Freelance, it's an excellent book as well, as good if not better than Green Arrow. IDW is currently reprinting the series in TB's, so if you can't find the issues, I'd recommend checking out the trades. Grell is also 5 issues into a new 6-issue Jon Sable miniseries, which is also a great read.

Agreed. As much as I liked Mr. Grell's Green Arrow run, I enjoyed his Jon Sable run that much more. I'm currently enjoying his Jon Sable mini-series as well.

It's a Classic.
It's like asking if Gretzky's run with the Oilers was good, or Jordan's run with the Bulls or Montana's with the 49ers.

Oh yeah, Warlord is a classic. DC really needs to trade these issues, especially with the release of the new series.
Wouldn't it be nice to see Grell writing/drawing for DC again.

His run on Warlord was epic. If I'm not mistaken, both Warlord and Jon Sable were amongst the top sellers the first couple of years they were out.
Just some info on Warlord, Mr. Grell has stated in the past that his wife did some Ghost writing on the Warlord series late in his run. He hasn't stated which issues she did but that's interesting to know.

Both Warlord and Sable sold well. Warlord was one of the few titles to survive the DC implosion, so sales must have been strong.

There was an interview with either Grell or Wolfman recently where they stated that if it wasn't for Warlord and New Teen Titans, DC would have been in serious trouble financially in the late 70's/early 80's. Warlord sold great originally because fantasy sold real well with series like Warlord,Conan, Red Sonja, and others during that time period.
