There are a couple of comic series ( Hard to find ) and a tv series ( really old and hard on the eyes ) that goes deeper into the story but I would just stick to the movies.
There is a "New Fist of the North Star" series out that follows ( I think, didn't see the first episode ) after the first movie that didn't look bad. I plan to pick the series up myself.
The first movie is over 15 years old.
A lot of the character are humans mutated from radiation after world war three.

Hi pirulaso
I just did a column on FOTNS if you are interested.
http://www.comicbookresources.com/columns/index.cgi?column=cmi&article=2095
The new version of the comic series can be found if you look around the net and the older black and white viz translations can be found at some book stores and also at amazon and such. The mycomicbookshop.com link has a few of the graphic novels as well.
The TV series was in 2 parts and ran 152 episodes. It's kinda rough due to its age, but it is good cazy martial arts fun. Manga released the first 36 episodes, which ends at a bad place for story arcs. They also changed the opening credits, but it's not a terrible translation over all.
There's a newer slicker "Shin Fist of the North Star" 3 part series as well. Fans seem to be divided on this, but I am kind of biased because I got to do dubbing as background characters (way way in the background) and some dying guys (no lines, just soem screaming) it was fun.
For tons of more info than I have though, you should check out this yahoo group:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fistofthenorthstargames
it's free membership and Yahoo! ID registration is required
for chatrooms but not for posting.
I got invited to join, and it is way feakin cool, almost annything you want to know about FOTNS is there. Amazing!
Oh yeah, on the tall guy tip. Yeah, they are supposed to be mutants, but also they are somewhat malleable in size, just to be cool looking. The emphasis is more on cool than continuity, but I dig it anyway.

News broke the other day that new movies and OVAs are on their way in Japan, hopefully they will get translated over here.

on a side note, yes its old but it was enjoyable one way or another. (lol its nothing like the first time u see someone explode.)

I thought he explained it in the movie, but I know there are lots of things that take for granted you've seen the TV show. Basically he is able to hit pressure points that control the body. He can make peopel explode, or Jagi almost shoot himself. In the movie he also heals Lyn and Rei's sister, so he isn't just about destruction. If you check out the manga and the show, he does even crazier stuff with his martial arts. It's cool and amusing in an over-the top violence sort of way.
I always dug Rei's slcing power, the thugs shifting left to right and falling apart always stuck with me.

Yea I got heavy into Fist Of The North Star series, hard to find the Manga, didn't know it existed. Heck I even tried to role play as Kenshiro the charecter, but due to his power my fellow rpers where jealous and afraid, so I stopped, but I did kick some butt. Oh Yea!

There was also a prequel released called Fist of the Blue Sky but the company localizing it has since disappeared. I think there were 4 novels that came out.

Sheesh, the old TV series aren't hard on the eyes at all. They were made in the early 80s, they look like they were made in the early 80s. So what? Some people have no appreciation for the classics.
