Hey guys,

I don't know if you guys went to see Constantine- it's based on one of my favorite comics Hellblazer. I thought Keanu was awesome in it. And I just found out that there's footage after the credits- so I went to see it again. The new footage adds a lot to the movie. You guys should check it out

You do know Hellblazer is a Vertigo comic right?

Play nice...I am a big Hellblazer fan from WAY back, and I had fully-well intended to boycott the movie , due to its straying from the original, but many of my friends HAVE seen Constantine, and claimed it was very well done ...

It's interesting to see these guys who have only ever posted to push a specific movie and have "new member" under their names. Make your avatar a dollar sign, buddy.

That said, I liked the flick a lot (and I loved the Garth Ennis run on the book, so I'm not a total apostate).

I enjoyed it a fair bit, although in retrospect it did seem rather reminiscent of the Christopher Walken movie The Prophecy. Mind you, I've never read Hellblazer except in a Vertigo sampler many, many years ago. It always seemed just a bit drearier than I would like.

meh, I'm glad I stayed after to see the extra scene since it provided closure for Chas, but it was silly. It was like an afterthought, they watched their movie and realized how badly they handled that so they had to "fix" it.

If you saw it, didn't stay but don't plan to watch it again...

(as I said, this does have alot to do with how the movie ends so it is a biggish spoiler)
Keanustine is at Chas's gravestone, places his lighter on it, says "You did good, kid" and walks away. As he walks away black wings flap- Chas pops up from the grave as an angel with those glowy eyes.

*sigh*

I missed out on the end part the first time I saw the movie but I went back and saw it again with a friend and got to see his ghost. So sad lol. Anyways I loved this movie and can't wait for the DVD and really hope they make a sequel. I can imagine how much more epic things would become because the Hellblazer story is really deep.

Despite all the recommendations I'm dreading this....Dangerous Habits is one of my favourite storylines. Still, lower expectations - greater surprise when film turns out to be alright.

Really, there is no reason to sit through all of the credits just for that scene. Although, it is better than some after the credits scenes.

So, I was confused by it. Was it saying Chas had been an angel all along or that he turned into one after he died. I'll admit that I havn't read much Hellblazer, I just havn't gotten around to it honestly, but according to ANY Protestant/Catholic/Jewish teachings, humans don't become angels when they die(a common Hollywood misconception), if they become anything it's Saints. Now, if Chas becoming an angel was just part of the ficional Hellblazer mythos, I will buy that, but otherwise it's wrong. Especially since I thought it was doing a good job of maintaining the religeous accuracy, but I supose they are allowed to take liberties. Does anyone know what the intention was?

That's why I said it was silly. It doesn't have anything to do with Hellblazer-lore and AFAIK it's wrong by the Catholic views they were apparently trying to follow. The closest to a good explanation has to do with the rules of the movie, that Chas isn't technically an angel, because they're not allowed on the mortal plane (not from the comic), but a half-breed. But they never really went into what a half-breed is (and once again, don't go to the comic- they didn't get that from the comic either).

Thanks, I agree that it was silly, and stupid since it didn't go by the book, but that makes the book better in my eyes, I will have to check it out now. I was trying to figure out what they meant by half breeds, but if it's not in the books then I really don't care.

It's sad when a movie studio is so determined to keep a bad film from failing that they pretend to be average moviegoers and post positive reviews, hoping this will get others to watch the film.

That seems like an overly paranoid theory - I wouldn't have thought it'd be worth the effort for the difference it'd make. On the other hand it's the only plausible explanation I can see for the two posts this poster has made.

Either way I'm off to see it tonight so I'll make up my own opinion

Saw it on Sunday. They change so much (Constantine is psychic, not a mage; Gabriel/the Snob's role is substantially different; and all this 'balance', crap), yet somehow it's not completely dire. It is if you're expecting 'Hellblazer'. It is the most entertaining comic 'adaptation' (I don't agree with this description since it's so different, but all the same) so far, more comparable to Blade than any other recent comic film. But I would credit any success on the film's part to its director and Tilda Swinton, who's all sexy in that Annie Lennox in a suit kinda way.

Now the halfbreeds I understood to be the Nephilim, the off-spring of the angels from the Biblical Apocrypha. Really at times I imagine the script read like a grown up version of 'the Sixth Sense'...."I see demons!" Papa Midnite being good was, well tokenism I'm afraid. He was an interesting character, but why did he have to be Midnite, whom we know from Ennis' books as a necromancer who carves out a section of hell for himself. Also Constantine calling the Devil Lucifer was just a blatant break.

Still I loved the Devil's arrival. It couldn't be shown, but when his feet descend into frame you may notice they match the arrangement of Christ's feet on the cross - just like in 'Dangerous Habits', when the First of the Fallen appears to collect John's soul. So one or two nice nods then (Gabriel's eventual fate also ties in slightly.)

It was okay, but blatantly not Hellblazer. To be honest I don't know why they didn't just change the names and not bother paying the royalties to DC. The only thing they really took from the comic was the lung cancer

I was convinced that was Emma Thompson playing Gabriel until I looked the film up on IMDB to rate it (I gave it 6).

Saw it. It was okay. There were one or two moments where keanu would sneer out a sarcastic quip that made it seem almost like he was playing John. He wasn't, though, of course.

It also suffered from the whole "murder-mystery-with-only-one-suspect" syndrome that afflicts so many mediocre pot-boilers. I mean, who on earth could the divine "midwife" be? Goodness gracious, the whole cinema was stumped, i daresay.

I'm being a little snotty, i suppose, considering it wasn't that bad. It just wasn't Helblazer, and certainly not all it could have been.

What was worse was when John's friend was looking at the illustration of the 'hell bible' - it had a bloody picture of the angel Gabriel using the spear!

I'm confused though, why did John call Gabe a 'halfbreed'. So this wasn't 'the', angel Gabriel?

Frankly, I thought this was the worst comicbook adaption since Catwoman.

IMHO, it's what the name suggests, someone who's half-human and half-angel/demon.
