View Full Version : It's Back, Previews Reviews! -- boo! yay!
Well, whatever, here we go! :)
Marvel Previews:
Interesting idea for the new avengers, but they should take sentry out.
Fantastic Four 527 - looks good. nice to see sue actually look like a mom.
she's not infinitely child looking there.
Ultimate Fantastic Four - finally, jae's thing looks rockish, kinda.
Ultimates 2 6 - umm...guys, valkyrie's armor, its not a fashion statement.
Mary Jane: Homecoming 3 0f 4 - woo! more take art!
Daredevil 73 - i have to admit, the art change to the covers was a good
decision.
Marvel Knights Spider-Man 14 - suprise, suprise, guess who's in this
one....wolverine.
Daredevil: Redemption 5 - Excellent cover by Bill!
Wolverine 28 - that cover is like doody, but I know this one will be good by
millar and romita and co.
Strange 6 - who is dormammu? but that is a great pic by brandon!
Incredible Hulk 81 - this was previewed in some thread, but in color, again, a
great pic for a book that is getting good ratings lately.
G.L.A. 2 - why am i seeing more wolverine? *getting hulk-type angry*
The Pulse 9 - wolverine?!?!???
Fantastic Four: Foes 5 - again, sue looks not so much, defeated, as sleepy.
just as long as she looks youthful and sexy, right guys!?!
Stormbreaker: TSoBRB 5 - looking great again!
Power Pack 3 - Gurihiru makes this look like a keeper! :)
Secret War: FtFoNF - seems like a boring subject, but Gabriele on art, I'm in!
Runaways 4 - hopefully, i'll still be into this by then.
Livewires 4 - weird book, the whole title just seems like another take on adam
doing his dirty pair book.
Marvel Adventures - I have no idea what's going on with Marvel, whether this
is a new line or what, but 2 books seem interesting...
The Thing 3 - art looks clean and crisp.
Spider-Man 3 - our own cbr idol contestant, Patrick is drawing this one!
New X-Men 1 & 14 - New X-Men looks like this!?!?!??!! O.O
Punisher: The Cell (one-shot) - can't remember the name, but this looks a
heckuva lot like an earlier issue of punisher that was part of the 1st marvel
knights line, I think, and it was awesome, so I hope this is not some fancy
redux of that story.
Punisher 21 - Leo Fernandez? Did they mean Leandro? He's the one reason
for me to get this book, he was controversal on queen and country, but he
realy fit in well with wolverine and I think, this book.
Powers 11 - is there any reason why as to put what books he's published, when
they are made by the same publisher?!?!? O.o *another bendis snipe*
Previews:
Dark Horse
Conan 16 - looks great as usual, Conan and the Jewels of Gwahlur 2, on the other hand....
Star Wars: General Grievous 3 - Again, I ask, what/who is General Grievous?!?!?!???
DC
Batgirl 64 - ale and jesse, this is bound to be good!
Batman: Jekyll & Hyde 2 - Jae is doing batman?!? O.O
Robin 138 - bill, damion and sandra, awesome!!
Gotham Central: Half A Life TP - I have to admit, that's another collective talent pool that gets me very interested in this book as well as, In the Line of Duty TP
Action Comics 827 - Gail gail gail!!!
Birds of Prey 82 - oohhh, gail and adriana back again, tho differently, still, gets me interested. :)
Breach 5 - seems like crap, but i cannot wholeheartedly ignore the art team that gave us the wonderful, batgirl: year one
The Flash 222 - I'm glad Porter and Livesay will be back, they make this comic fun.
Hawkman 40 - Looks interesting, or maybe, it's just the short skirt.
JLA 114 - Garney is good, but I think he's one of those artists that needs a good inker and colorist to make the art look good.
The OMAC Project 2 - wow. Saiz, from all those Manhunter covers is doing his own book!
Side Note: WHo is this, Justiniano?!? They are like all over the place!
THe Rann/Thanagar War 1 - Reis and Marc, wow.
Seven Soldiers: Shining Knight 2 - that's one serious looking cover!
Seven Soldiers: Guardian 2 - I've missed Stewart art, I wonder if it's still the same as I remember?
Villains United 1 - gail! O.O
Side Note: Matsuda, I really need him to do more Buffy books.
Olympus TP - Ooohh! Butch, so that's where you've been hiding!
City of Tomorrow 2 - Howard does all, I still wonder how his stuff will stand up to his Flagg! books.
The Intimates 7 - Wooo!!
Planetary 23 - Cassaday always seems to draw good stuff for this title.
The Razor's Edge: Redbird 3 - ooh, Pearson art!!
Otherworld 3 - Phil?!??!!
Image
Earthboy Jacobus GN - Ohh, Doug does another one!
Felt: True Tales of Underground Hip Hop - Despite the overtly-sexy cover, stuff like this from Jim still intrigues me.
PVP 0 - Much as I hate Kurtz and his 'revamping' of his book over and over again, some of his stuff makes me laugh.
Savage Dragon 125 - Well, if it is anything like last week's book, count me out!
The Stardust Kid 1 - For some reason, I think they tapped their creative juices with Abadazad, rather than this one.
Pigtale 3 - O.O Now this looks good! In comparison to the other crap they've been hyping this book with!
The Walking Dead 20 - nice! :)
Independents
Strangers In Paradise: Molly & Poo TP - Molly and Poo?!? This looks good.
Penny and Aggie 01 - Oh, Gisele is back! She draws nice.
Strange Eggs 1 - Could be interesting...
Gold Digger 64, Peebomanga Pocket Manga Volume 1 GN, Ninja High School 128 - Okay, now Fred is very talented, but I think he's starting to stretch himself too much, he does like all these books and animation all himself and he's even the head moderator on the Antarctic forums!! THAT'S TOO MUCH FRED!!!! Your work is starting to suffer as a result, take some time and concentrate on one thing at a time!!!!!
Mr. T 1 - There's gonna be a mr t comic book!?!?? O.o
Dark Mists 1 - looks cool
Sabrina volume 2 67 - Tania does Josie! Whee!!
Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1 - I plan on getting all of those covers except for the glow one, they all freak me out!!!!!!!
Tarot: Witch of the Black Rose 32 - *looks at cover* I swear, is there nothing in that book more than sex and violence?!?
Generic Mini-Series 2 - hehe.
Couple Volume 1 GN - Okayyy, but where are the rest of the books?!??? *wants more couple books*
Fathom Prelude 1 - OOOHH!!! A prelude to a book that will never make it past issue 3, and take years to come out, it must be mine...Psyche!
Devil's Due Publishing
Side Note: Tim needs to do some more Bunny books, at least he's recognized the coolness of Hack.
Ghostbusters 3 - Awesome!!!
Stray Bullets 39 - The last one was weird for me, we'll see..
Supernatural Law 1 Reprinting - This book is dead, at least some of the good (early) stuff, is still around.
Silent Hill: The Grinning Man - Finally, a new artist!
Damn you E.J. Su, you're doing everything BUT the one Image book I need you to finish!
Dorothy 3 - hmmm....
Savage World 1 - first thought, Conan ripoff.
Knights of the Dinner Table 103 - Yes.
Bolland Strips! TP - Could be very interesting.
Mam Tor: Event Horizon Volume 1 - Mam Tor?!?!? That's one of the stupidest names I've ever heard. Unless, of course, it's someone's actual name, then, I will not mock it, but if it's some chosen, made up business name..... *begins the mocking*
Nancy Drew Volume 2: Writ in Stone GN - Where was volume 1???!?
A Treasury Victorian Murder Volumes 2&4-6 - Sorry, I am all for freedom of speech, but really, I find nothing all that funny about real people being murdered by a serial killer all that amusing, as this tale seems to be.
Love as A Foreign Language 3 - WooHoo!!
Q&C Declassified, nice and all, but where's the regular Q&C dammit!??!! It seems like too much time between issues.
Dracula vs King Arthur 1 - only in comic books, only in comic books.... ;)
Ravenous Gn - Wow! Dawn came back to us!!!!, but this is still more like a prose novel than comic book. :(
Side Notes:
- I wish Bill Maus would do more than the Zen books.
- Modesty Blaise, it really IS interesting to see this book in so many shots in Pulp Fiction.
Tokyo, Mew Mew a la Mode Volume 1 - tooo...cute, cannot..mock......
Instant Teen: Just Add Nuts Vol4 - Good to see Kellogs is a worldwide phenom....
Super F$$$$$$ 1 - This might be funny.
Random Encounter 3 - This might be good.
Books
One Notable: Foul Play! The Art & Artists of the Notorious 1950's E.C. Comics TP - Nice, this book looks like one to get!!!

My comments on the comics that interest me:
New Avengers-Its been a really good title so far! Can't wait to read more!
Fantastic Four 527-JMS and Mike Mckone are going to be awesome on this title! Can't wait to read this!
Daredevil 73 - I've missed so many issues of this! I definitly need to go to trades!
Incredible Hulk 81 -I'll have to get trades of this too!
Planetary 23-I'll prob just wait till the next trade comes out to catch up on this!
Savage Dragon 125 --I always look forward to this book alot!
The Stardust Kid 1-This comic looks really, really good imo. I like the J.M. DeMatties/Mike Ploog team alot. Abadazad was great and this looks like it will be too! Count me in!
The Walking Dead 20 -I really need to get into the trades of this! It sounds really good!
Yes...thats alot of trades I need to get! lol!
Btw, I have a question: is Ultimate Iron Man in this preview (I know you don't list it..) or is that a bimonthly mini-series or is it over by this time? I'm looking forward to Ultimate Iron Man quiete a bit (I'm an Orson Scott Card fan).

Dark Horse
Conan 16 - looks great as usual, Conan and the Jewels of Gwahlur 2, on the other hand....
Jewels of Gwahlur is probably the book I'm most looking forward to! Craig Russell is one of the true "artist's artist" in comic books and this is such a good story. Based on Russell's opera and classics adaptations, I think this Howard story will be very well done under his pen. There was an adaptation in Savage Sword iirc drawn by Dick Giordano. If you're at all interested in classic Conan material, dig it out!

Q&C Declassified, nice and all, but where's the regular Q&C dammit!??!! It seems like too much time between issues.
It's coming... It's just, after the somewhat erratic schedule of the last year, we want to make sure that we're completely back on track before we solicit anything. Needless to say, issue 29+ is definitely on the table and we'll hopefully be announcing a schedule for it in the next month or two.

Previews Things which are intriguing me this month:
*Finally*, a frickin' second "Gotham Central" collection.
"Desolation Jones". Warren Ellis / J.H. Williams. Rock on.
"Deep Sleeper" TPB from Image. I'm there.
I liked "Puffed", so "Slop: Analecta" gets consideration.
"Strange Eggs" looks like a definite. I talked at SPX with the guy putting it together; I laughed and said that Slave Labor is starting off a whole Egg Comics subgenre with this and "Egg Story". He grinningly told me that he hadn't even known about ES while he was doing this despite them being through the same company. This amuses me.
Non-Rucka "Queen & Country" could have given me qualms, but Antony Johnston is a very good writer to choose to pick up to reins.

Here's what caught my eye:
Man with the Screaming Brain (Dark Horse): I'm interested in this, but more for Hilary Barta than Bruce Campbell. Barta has a great Wally Wood-esque style and he doesn't do as much comic work as I'd like. Still, I'll probably hold off for the inevitable TPB.
The Goon #12 (Dark Horse). Gotta have my Goon. It's one of the few "monthly" comics I'm still buying. It's a Dark Horse book so it's almost assured a TPB eventually, but I can't wait. It's that good.
Billy the Kid's Old-Timey Oddities #2 (Dark Horse) looks cool and it's written by Eric Powell (The Goon), but I managed to make myself not get the first issue, so the odds that I'll get any of the subsequent ones are greatly diminished. I'll almost certainly get the trade when it's available.
The Jackson 500 Volume 1 (Dark Horse) is a hard cover collection of Tim Biskup paintings. I love Tim Biskup so this is very tempting.
Usagi Yojimbo #84 (Dark Horse): Just because it's good comics.
Superman: Infinite City (DC) appeals to me not because of any inordinate interest in Superman (he's just okay) as it is for the work of Carlos Meglia. He's an Argentinian cartoonist who hasn't really caught on big here in the States, but I think has a following in Europe and, well, Argentina. If you like Humberto Ramos, you'd probably like Meglia, too.
Plastic Man #16 (DC) doesn't have as big of a readership as it should. I applaud DC for moving to bi-monthly publication rather than canceling it outright.
Top 10: The Forty Niners (ABC): I haven't quite gotten around to the second Top 10 collection and I keep not getting around to it. I'm not even going to mention Smax. Or my lack of Smax. My Smaxlessness. So maybe this original graphic novel is what I need to jolt me to my senses.
Earthboy Jacobus (Image): I have a rule. I have to read anything that uses the phrase "great American ass-kicker" in the solicitation text. Oh, and it's by Doug Tennapel. So there you go.
PvP #0 (Image): Simply one of my favorite series right now. I've read every issue and don't plan to stop now. It brings me too much pleasure.
Savage Dragon #125 (Image): I'm actually only a sporadic reader of the Dragon, but this is the "milestone" 125th issue, so I may pick this one up.
Deep Sleeper (Image): I don't normally get into the type of comic that I think this is, but the solicitation art looks cool and take a look at that logo. It's a good logo.
Slop: Analecta (Image): Like Scott, I'll read this strictly on the strength of Puffed, which I also liked.
Burglar Bill #5 (Image): I've been waiting on this title in hopes of a trade paperback, but it's been hard because Paul Grist is fricking awesome.
Freedom Force #5 (Image): I wasn't so sure about this at first, but it's been getting good press, so I'll likely pick it up if it makes it to TPB.
Invincible #23 (Image): If you like superhero comics and you haven't read Invincible, what are you waiting for? It's great! I read this in TPB so I'm dying for the fourth one to come out.
Pigtale #3 (Image): If subsequent issues are anything like #1, this may turn out to be one of my very favorite series of 2005.
Sea of Red #3 (Image): Yet another series I'm waiting for in TPB, but it looks fantastic!
The Walking Dead #20 (Image): I've never been a big fan of the horror genre and I love this book. Looking forward to the next trade.
Fantastic Four #127 (Marvel): I've read just about every issue of FF since #171 and quite a few prior to that. I attribute this series as the one that really got me interested in comics around the age of 10. Of all of the ones I've read, Waid and Wieringo's have been among the best, I think. So, Straczynski and McKone have their work cut out for them.
Shanna the She-Devil #4 (Marvel): I debated waiting for a trade or hardcover on this and couldn't do it. I love Frank Cho's art too much. The only bad thing about Shanna is that it's kept him away from Liberty Meadows.
The Golden Plates #3 (AAA Pop): I'm not Mormon, but I'll likely read this when it's collected.
Bugtown #6 (Aeon): I've been a sporadic reader of anything Matt Howarth for the past 15 or so years. That's been harder the past few years though since he hasn't done anything new. That changed last year though and he's put out something almost monthly.
Bombaby (Amaze Ink/SLG): I've been eyeing this since the beginning. I may actually get it pretty soon.
Mike Hoffman's Mythos Magazine #1 (Antimatter): While the price is little steep for a mag, I really like Hoffman's Frank Frazetta-influenced style.
Hero Squared #1 (Boom): If there's a trade collection, I'll read this.
Doc Frankenstein #4 (Burlyman): If there's trade collection, I'll read this.
Walt & Skeezix Volume 1 (Drawn & Quarterly): I'm a sucker for classic comic strip collections and this one's designed and edited by Chris Ware, so that pretty much makes it a must-buy.
Supernatural Law #1 (Exhibit A): I just recently got hooked on this title and it's great, so it'll be cool to grab the first ish.
Donald Duck and Friends #328, Donald Duck Adventures Volume 12, Mickey Mouse and Friends #277, Walt Disney's Comics & Stories #657, Uncle Srooge #342, and Walt Disney's Vacation Parade #2 (Gemstone): I loves me some Disney comics.
Boneyard Volume 1 Color Edition (NBM): I've only read the first Boneyard TPB, so do I continue with the b&w editions or wait for the color editions? A quandary.
Scarlet Horn (SAF): The cover looks neat.
Silver Comics #4 (Silver): I've gotten all of these so far. They're fun retro-style adventure comics.
Whew!

it's my favorite of all Alan Moore's writings. It's the one I'd go back and reread for pure pleasure at any time. It's just cool, and wonderfully dense without ever being overwhelming or confusing.
SMAX is a much lighter story, but lots of fun, also.

Hey Augie, thanks for the shout out to my upcoming graphic novel, "Ravenous". I've been away from comics too long and am greatly looking forward to bringing you guys this fun little twisted tale.
I must respond to the fellow who mentioned earlier about this being a prose novel - hey! it's not! It's a hundred pages of pretty pictures and word balloons. After that is a supplemental Poe section ;) - I think Jonah is working on a preview which will be running on CBR in the near future. I hope ya'll dig it!
Also, happy birthday, Augie! Do we share the same birthday? Mine was Thursday, 3/3. Hope you had a good one!
best,

Hey Dawn!
Yes, it's been too long. It seems like just last year that I was bumping into you in the Image Pavillion of any major comic con. OK, Chicago and San Diego, at least. So welcome back to the game. It's good to have you back.
Yup, I'm a 3/3er, too. Happy birthday to you, as well! How did yours go? Mine went OK, actually. It was a fun day. I got no work done because everyone came over to my cube to wish me a happy birthday and call me "young." Obviously, I work with too many old people. ;-)
And RAVENOUS is interesting to me because I've liked what very little Poe I've ever read, but I've never managed to push myself to go back and read more of it. But, hey, if I can write it off in my mind as research for a column, then I can push myself into it. =)
So, what movie are you working on these days? Are you allowed to say?

Hey Augie,
I just finished a sci-fi film called "The Island", directed by Michael Bay, starring Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson. It's a big summer popcorn movie, Very macho! I got to see Sean Bean on the set, that was pretty cool. He's quite striking in person.
I hope to see you on the convention scene this summer! :)

Oh, cool, I've heard about that one. And any movie Michael Bay does is bound to be a production nightmare-- er, I mean, designer's dream. ;-)
See ya in San Diego,

I feel the same way about Tom Strong. I don't know why I've waited so long because I really liked Vol. 1. Anyway, I headed over to Amazon and ordered Vol. 2. It should be here tomorrow or the next day.

Mam Tor: Event Horizon Volume 1 - Mam Tor?!?!? That's one of the stupidest names I've ever heard. Unless, of course, it's someone's actual name, then, I will not mock it, but if it's some chosen, made up business name..... *begins the mocking*
Mam Tor is a large landmark hill in central England. It has remains of an Iron Age fort, and artefacts dating back as far as the Bronze Age have also been found. It's not far from where Liam Sharp lives and works.
