FINALLY!

I have some shots of me after my trip to the Mexican dentist.

Y'all don't know how GOOD it feels to be able to smile like a normal person, instead of being all stone faced or having a really bad smirk.

Hey, you're not nearly as creepy-looking now! Good job.

Was there something about the Mexican dentist that made you go there? Did you have to ride a burrow to the office?

Heh, the guy that actually did it was great, but, I'm a little sorry the original dentist planned was on vacation. I saw pictures, and she's a MAJOR hottie! :)

Thank you everyone!

And to answer your question TJ, I was dressed as a Cyber Witch both nights---had some light up stuff w/the modern costume and glitter face paint and pentacle.

And Morts---wait till my *own* hair gets long again! ;) (Only thing is, it'll take about two years... sigh.) I discovered I miss it, and with flattening irons now available to everyone, perhaps I won't have that problem with a top layer of frizzies like I used to. DB's hair is smoother than mine---I've got just enough body that the outermost layer would curl a little, so it's like I had a light cloud over the rest of it. Urgh. I hated that.

I thought Troy took some nice pics of DB, though I like the ones better that her friend 'gnome has done. Still, it's rare that she *doesn't* take a good pic! And the ones of Perry and his wife were good too---though some of the ones of Perry were amusing as well---hee hee.

*chuckles* Well, it helps that the wig is black and styled much like Suzannah's hair, IIRC. ;) You've got one hot wife, Morts. :)

This is true.

Actually, Suzannah's cut her hair short. The shots from the Pizza store were a Sheitel or wig. 100% European hair. Expensive sucker. Her boss felt her hair was "too long" for hats and made her uncomfotable, so she chopped it all off. You'd like the resulting scenario:

Suzannah walks into work and takes her hat off. A hush falls over the room. He boss recovers
Boss: Did...did you do that because of ME?
Suzannah: YUP!
Boss: Mordechai's going to KILL me.

ARRRRGGGHHH!!!

NOT good. Oh, I'm sure Suzannah's hair looks good short, too, but... but... she had such a GLORIOUS MANE! It was BEAUTIFUL!!! (Frankly, I envy her hair.)

Does the hair have to be *completely* covered? Or just, wearing something on top? She could have put it up under the hat, and wore a veil w/the hat (or a scarf to cover her neck) if necessary...

Sigh.

She could have even worn a veil *over* her hair, under the hat...

Oh well. It'll grow if she lets it.

Yup. The funny thing is, I could care less if Suzannah covered her hair. The way it is worded is that hair is an intimate object between husband and wife, so it shouldn't be "out there"..but I don't care. I love her hair. it's seriously one of the things that I find most attractive about her. Why should she have to hide it because some other guy thinks it's nice too?

No doubt.

She needs to hear that more. It used to be really, really thick and it's finally starting to thin. It's also white in places, which drives me wild for some reason.

You know, I am not sure you've actually ever seen a picture WITHOUT her in a wig.

MILFs serve an important purpose in life:

they remind young men, on the gonad level, that their wives can still be beautiful and desirable as they have children and age. To me, that's a very important point---too many women think that having children and aging lessens their desirability. And a few men think so too.

I'll take all the MILF points I can get---it's one more way of educating our young people. :D

Swinging also serves this purpose well. Most swing gals are also moms... meaning MILFs that one might *get* to F. Seeing how many want to do just that does wonders for the self-esteem of many a swinger lady.

Yeah. The term existed before the movie, but the movie made it mainstream. Hee hee.

BTW, haven't seen the second movie yet, but did see the third one---it's great, even better than the first. And the interviews on the disc w/the guy who plays Stiffler are fascinating. He took the role and made it so much more than the director envisioned. It's great when that happens.

But of all the actors in those movies, Eugene Levy is my favorite. He plays his role to perfection. He's an awesome actor. (I remember him from his day in "Splash"---the first movie I ever saw him in.)

An experiment done to monkeys. One "wire monkey" would be in one cubicle, providing all the food for the baby monkey. On the next cubicle would be a furry covered wire monkey, giving no food. The baby monkey would eat the food the wire monkey gave but would go to the furry monkey to cuddle.
Thus it proved that monkeys are furries.

JeffreyWKramer

Um... what's a "wire monkey"? Haven't heard that phrase before...

It's something of a psych in joke. I'll explain.

Researcher Harry Harlowe (one of the U of Wisconsin schools - I'm thinking LaCrosse?) was interested in studying attachment, and the effects of deprivation on later socialization. Since it would be completely unethical(not to mention harmful and potentially dangerous) to do the sorts of experiments he had in mind with human infants, he studied monkeys.

Some of the experiments he did involved baby monkeys which were deprived from contact with the mothers, but otherwise fed, kept warm, etc. He also did some famous studies in which he created mommy-monkey substitutes. Some of these monkey substitutes were covered with terry cloth, warm, etc. - but did not provide food. Others were essentially wire constructs with a monkey-like head and a food dispenser made to kind of resemble a momma monkey's nipple.

Among other things, Harlowe found that monkeys deprived of social contact generally did quite poorly. Even if later allowed to socialize freely, they were awkward, fearful, sometimes aggressive and did poorly in finding mates - and even in doing sex if they had mates. He also found that the baby monkeys greatly preferred the fuzzy monkey substitutes over the wire monkeys... at most they'd go to the wire monkey for food, then back to the fuzzy ones. Baby monkeys provided only with the wire monkey sometimes died, even though they had ample food, warmth, etc.

Harlowe made a whole lot of other findings than that, but these are some of the basics. His research, while widely criticized by modern animal rights folk, provided a great deal of good information about primate development which has helped us better understand human conditions such as attachment disorder, the effects of uninvolved orphanage staff on infants, and failure to thrive. It was among the most important psychological research done in the 20th century, as far as I'm concerned, up there with Milgram's obedience studies.

Solaris
11-12-2004, 07:08 AM
Ohhh. I remember the research, but had forgotten the part about the wire monkeys.

While I have to agree with the animal rights activists and say that the research did involve some cruelty, I also have to agree that it provided invaluable information on primates, humans included, on the importance of nurturing. I guess you could say I'm of two minds over it. It's a done deal, regardless, so we might as well take all the value we can from the man's research.

I *do* have to wonder, though, if he couldn't have just studied humans who were already under those conditions (lacking nurture) or who had grown up with those, along with well-nurtured humans, to gain similar, if not so accurate, information. I think that's the approach we'd be more likely to take today. But, working with monkeys and a shorter lifespan for the subjects, plus being able to completely control the environments of the different test groups, I can also see how his research yielded "cleaner" information in a shorter time frame.

Sigh.

I just have a soft spot for critters under duress, I guess. But I also can't deny the value of what the man learned about *us*, and how it's helped us know the importance of nurturing children.

Thanks for the info, Jeffrey. As ever, you are a font of knowledge. :)

Harlowe was a researcher and instructor at the University of Wisconsin. It would have been very hard (if not impossible) for him to travel to Romania or China or somewhere to observe the effects of deprivation in orphanages. Beyond that, observation of naturalistic phenomena - while valuable - does not provide you with control over the situation, and it thus provides less in the way of solid conclusions than does true experimentation - as you noted above.

Now, I think animal research on trivial things - like squirting perfume in rabbits' eyes and such - is pretty loathesome. But there are times when animal research is the only way to go. In the case of Harlowe's research, things were learned that has had a positive, very real-world effect on the way orphanages are run, which has no doubt benefitted many thousands - perhaps millions - of children worldwide. That's worth a few messed-up monkeys, IMHO.

Without animal research, we would not have transplant operations. We could not do valuable cancer research, or develop vaccines. Keep in mind also - animal research ends up benefitting veterinary medicine, too, which means it carries benefits to animals.

So, overall, I think the benefits of animal research - when conducted into significant problems, and done so as to minimize unnecessary pain - is a very valuable thing. And in the case of Harlowe - as you noted, Chris, it is done. There would be little value to continuing to repeat Harlowe's experiments, as we already have the data. At this point, pure repeats would have no real scientific value, and thus are not ethically a good idea. At the same time, if some gifted primate/developmental psych researcher had some good ideas that might offer new useful information and which required research models building on Harlowe's monkey research, I think that such projects would be valuable, and should be okayed.

As always, thank you for the kind comments.

Sigh. I'm just softhearted when it comes to animal research, even the important kind. Like I said, I'm of two minds over it, and haven't resolved the internal conflict yet.

You know what might help with that? Find out what area universities, health centers and such are conducting animal research in fields such as psychology, physiology and medicine, contact those places and make arrangements to go see some research in progress, see the animal facilities, and sit down and talk with the researchers. You will find that for the most part, the researchers are intelligent, ethical people who understand the value of what they are gaining from the animals they study, and who put a lot of effort into making the research as humane as possible. These aren't a bunch of sadistic thugs and Frankensteins, as groups like PETA like to claim. Not everybody who does animal research is like some of the goons that have worked for Revlon over the years.

You'll also almost certainly find the animals well cared-for, well fed, and given as much attention and leisure as possible given the sorts of research they are used for.

The best analogy I can make for most animal researchers - particularly those associated with universities and government programs - is the way med students are taught to view cadavers. With respect and reverence.

Hmmmm. Good idea. And I didn't mean to imply that I think anyone who does animal research has to be an ogre. I'm sure there are a lot of them out there who do indeed take a... human approach, I guess you could say, to their work, and treat their subjects with respect and compassion. Trust me: I'm well aware that while PETA may do some good things, they also take an extremist approach at times that is unreasonable, illogical, and downright dumb. (IMO) I've spoken in person with some PETA people... they bordered on fanaticism, in regards to balancing what I think are legitimate concerns with common sense. It was rather scary, in a way. In particular, they carry (what's the term? anthropomorphisizing?") whatever, to an extreme that Nature simply doesn't support or justify.

I do have a few others of me all Pirated-out. I love this costume to pieces, but I think for next year, I need to get a better shirt to wear with it. I almost popped all the buttons on it just walking this year. >.<

QW - you are looking like a lean, mean webslinging machine.

You must feel very proud of yourself.

Yes I am actually, I only have another 7 pounds till my first goal weight.

You have a neck! And a jawline! Congratulations! I still remember discovering mine after I lost my weight.

Yes, Yes I do. I only wish my cheeks would sink in a little. I still have way to round of a face for my taste. But I think that comes from my mothers side of the family so I may be stuck with it.

nnn. If I'm not mistaken this was in Destin, FL. I hear they didn't do too well with all the hurricanes, but I don't know exactly how bad the damage was. I assume it wasn't anywhere near as bad as in Pensacola.

I'm pretty sure it's not open to the public, anymore, but the beach is so loooooong and so near the road/highway, that it seems unlikely that they could keep everyone away completely.

Do we have any CBR folks from that area or familiar with it?

The owner of the station I work at has a house in Destin where his wife lives. I saw the pictures, and it looked like hell after those hurricanes. One bar lost it's parking lot, which is a hell of a thing to lose. It crumbled down an embankment, leaving the front door without any ground under it.

Also, hot damn. I am envious of the fact that you have a waist. My wife refers to my body as resembling Charlie Brown's, as I don't have what most people would call a waist.

It's something of a psych in joke. I'll explain.

Researcher Harry Harlowe (one of the U of Wisconsin schools - I'm thinking LaCrosse?) was interested in studying attachment, and the effects of deprivation on later socialization.Madison. A pretty decent biography of him (LOVE AT GOON PARK by Deborah Blum) came out a year or two ago, and it was kind of a big deal around campus.

Now, do I have any decent pictures of myself around here . . . okay, here're three. The first is me and my friend Alice at a department event. The second is me and my old lab partner with our built-from-scratch double effect evaporator. The third is me and a pair of Barcadi Girls at one of their promo events. Bless you, liquor industry.

Damn.

I wonder how the recover effort's going in that area. I haven't had the time or, frankly, enough motivation to see for myself (although I guess I could check their city and newspaper sites more often). I'd been more focused on Pensacola and the surrounding areas.

Thanks for the info.

Also, hot damn. I am envious of the fact that you have a waist. My wife refers to my body as resembling Charlie Brown's, as I don't have what most people would call a waist.

My g.f. and I jokingly/affectionately refer to each other as "Chuck" and "that cute lil red-haired girl" since her hair used to be reddish and I'm a block-head.

Glad I spent some time at the beaches while I could. Besides it being off-season, the nearby beaches haven't recovered from the 'canes, yet.

Anyway, here's a nice toothy one to share:

EDIT: This one's actually from a few years back.

That's a great photo, west.

I love photos with that type of background. Sweet. Anytime I'm near a body of water, I just have to take a photo of it.

Thanks.

I've decided to start taking advantage of the fact that the beaches so many people pay big bucks to get to are just two or three hours away from me. Like I said, I'm really glad I did. I don't know what the current state of the actual beaches are (as opposed to the buildings). Usually, after a bad 'cane, there are advisories or whatever against getting back in... for a loooong time.

One thing I love about many of the beaches near me is how shallow they are. You can walk waaaaay out into the water without having to get wet above the waist. Kinda convenient if you can't swim worth a lick (like me).

Heh. Now that I think about it, that water was freezing that day, but dangit, I'd been looking forward to that trip for TOO LONG to not get in for a minute or two - just long enough to get wet and get a pic. Then it was back to outlet mall shopping!

Finn loves the Frosty and Mrs. Frosty, and the Coke Polar Bear, from the parade... that day Meg was stuck doing Mrs. Frosty. It was funny---after the parade, when he went up to her she said "HI, FINN!" and he says "NAY-NAN!" (his version of Megan), and proceded to try to put his hand to her face through the Mrs. Frosty mouth.

(The ones w/Jasper and the Jail wagon are kind of funny, since she works in one!)

Check your local thrift store (men's and women's depts). From time to time, ours has some good stuff. We've got about 3-4 thrift stores in our area---a while back, I got a long leather coat, with a faux brown mink lining edging the cuffs and lining the very full hood (cut like some cape hoods). Retail and new it'd probably go for between $250-$400, and I got it for $69. And it was in good condition, too. It's now my "coat to wear when we go out and I'm wearing a nice dress." All my other "coats" were jacket or parka style, and looked funny w/a dress. (Of course, I use it for more than just when we go out for a nice dinner... otherwise, I wouldn't wear it much! heh.)

Looking good, Rin. You certainly can't call it short, but I do like the shorter hair. Long hair is good on a woman, but I'm not the biggest fan of hair that's down to the butt. It lacks any form that way.

Oh, wait! I almost forgot something.

Mmmrreeoowww.

There, that's better.

^_^ Thanks

And yeah, when I said on LJ I'd cut my hair and it felt short, people freaked. I'm like, nonono... short for ME. Not by any normal person's standards...

DarkBlade has post-haircut trauma:

Ok! One, I cut my hair the other day. Took off about 7-8". Eeek.

Wow! And it's STILL that long??? You must've been sitting on it a lot. This'll help reduce the unintentional neck strains. ;)

Still looks great, though, Deeb. You'll get used to it.

Glad to see this thread is still well and truly alive. Good to put a face to many names as well.

Have had to edit my pics out, one of my friends was slightly angry about there being one with her in it on a forum :o

Will do a few edits, as well as try and put some recent ones soon.

Heh I've been holding back. I had one more roll with Dragoncon pictures. It only had a few pictures from the actual con but I had to post this one. Meg as a sluggy belly girl and Bert.

Let me check here, that was Spider-Man #62, and in the background are a bunch more Spider-Man comics from around the same time.

Granted, I haven't been to *that many* big comic conventions, but I'm STILL impressed by those Stormtrooper costumes.

Really well-done.
