The Brothers Luna are following up their critically acclaimed Ultra with the 12-part Girls beginning in May. You can read about it here (http://www.comicbookresources.com/news/newsitem.cgi?id=4847). Aside from what sounds like a compelling story, I was interested to learn that Eric Stephenson is now Image's "Executvie Directot" (sic). ;)

Anybody else reading this? #3 came out today and I am well pleased with this series so far.....the best thing you can say about this book is the characterization.....its right on par with the story....things get crazy this issue....i just hope next issue we get some answers though maybe not since the "Main Girl" of this series has barely said a word.......
Are these how small Mid-Western towns really like to? Everybody up in everybody's business? Too close for comfort....

not just small towns but all towns. it's just worse in smaller areas because you don't have a choice BUT to know everyone else you're around. #3 was good, not as good as #2's ending though.

There's this dude Ethan who has godawful luck with girls. He basically mouths off and pisses off everyone in town, then finds a weird naked chick on the way home. Very, very weird things happen afterward.
I know it kinda sounds like an anime, but it's a bit more realistic and definitely sexier. And you just can't beat the appeal of naked chicks on the cover every issue.

I've become somewhat interested in checking this title out. I have noticed that the #1 and #2 first printings are pretty tough to find and are being labled as pretty hot comics, meaning price raise soon!
I may go find some of these real quick for both a reading and collecting stand point. Besides. I lack an Image title right now so this may be the one to pick up.

Interesting note: this book started as a miniseries, but in the letter pages of issue 3 they say its ongoing now.
This book is pretty good, but I'm going to want some kind of hint as to what is really going on fairly soon.

Ongoing? I donīt think so, itīs supposed to be a 12 issue maxi-series.
I really loved Ultra and I enjoy Girls also alot, but itīs going into a different direction. Letīs see where this one goes...
Anyone ordered the variants? I did because I think the Luna brothers really deserve it. :)

Ongoing? I donīt think so, itīs supposed to be a 12 issue maxi-series.
Item 1- I have issue 3 right in front of me, 3rd page of the letters column second response down from Jonathan Luna, I quote- "Lately, as we made a press release that GIRLS #1 sold out, and that theres a second printing, we also announced that GIRLS is now become an ongoing. It will go longer than 12 issues, but there will still be a definite ending, somewhere down the road." end quote. Go check GIRLS #3 and see if that looks familiar.
Item 2-go here (http://www.imagecomics.com/messageboard/viewtopic.php?t=5206) and read the 6th message down it is posted by Jonathan Luna. (and no that Dougy isn't me)

I'd prefer to see these guys do their own characters, but it's still very cool that they're getting some big assignments.

#4 Slight spoliers
So another explosive issue added to the fold...the girls are loose on the town, savagely beating the women of the town - yes, that's right, these girls are looking to wipe out the ones that already exist.....thats what it seems liek at least...interesting concept......
with the town now half-knowing about these girls (they still don't know about the eggs) ...Pickett (the redneck with the son) blasts a couple of them away, while Ethan and Wes manage to save the "Main Girl"......action and plotlines intertwine to keep me coming back for more....don't know about you guys, bu I'll be there.......keep it strong Brothers Luna...

Just finished issue #5, loving it. Interesting to see that initial impressions about the rednecks seem to be completely flipped with this issue... although there's always a chance of flipping back.
One thing that this issue brought up though is the final shot made me double think the name of the town. This is taking place in a town called Pennystown... I think it's too close to Penistown to be a coincidence. Anyone else think there's something there?

Great series !!!! After reading issues 1-3, I just had to locate the first prints.
So I snagged not only the first prints of Girls, but also the entire Ultra series for my collection. Just in the nick of time as I think the Luna'a are going to explode in several diractions in the future.
A giant spermazoa in a rural cornfield, next the dead body of a homemaker beat to death by a naked woman who just hatched eggs in a guy's bathroom after a barfight all culminating in an uproar of emotion, violence, conflict and more naked women beatings, not to mention a love triangle and a redneck and his son tied to a post with our main character now homeless...whew. And let's not forget exposives in pumpkins. How can you go wrong.
By the way, the accessible characterization, simply complicated plot, intriguing concept, and crystal clear artwork do help a little.

I won't lie and say I didn't start reading Girls because of the cover art. I'm a guy, so, come on; it was the least I could do. That said, the Luna Brothers are probably my favorite creative team in the industry, right now.
They tell great stories with great art, and I love all the varying personalities that the people in Pennystown have. Too frequently is a supporting cast portrayed in a dull, static kind of way, no one really having anything that sets them apart from the person standing next to them. These characters remind me of people I knew from the little town I used to live in, so their characterization is spot on. As for Ethan, I think he's probably one of the coolest 'heroes' I've ever read about. He's too real for words.
I've been reading Girls since day one, and I don't plan on stopping. If anyone is on the fence about this one -- get off it. It's a great series.
My only regret is not knowing about Ultra when it was new.

*Dusts off Thread*
Okay, so we are now up to issue #8, and for the most part everyone can say WTF!!! Each issue just gets weirder and weirder in a trainwreck kind of way (in a good way :) ). So far we know that the 'Girls' only attack women and that they can lay a ton of eggs with just one....fertilization. They town is sealed off from the rest of the world and the government has finally showed up. I was thinking about the lack of characterization so far, I mean we are up to 8 issues, but it does fit since the town is pretty much under siege the whole time and there really hasn't been much time for it. Hell, I guess we will have to wait until the numbers get widdled down some more since it doesn't seem like the killings will stop any time soon.
Overall I have been enjoying the hell out of this book and it ranks up there with the Walking Dead and Fell. Can't wait until next issue.

I'm dropping this title this month. Nothing seems to happen. Some mysterious girl appears, has sex, a bunch of eggs come out, more girls appear, they try and kill the females in town. All of this happened in the first two issues. Nothing very revealing since. I've held on this long, hoping something would convince me to stay, but money is too tight to keep it going.
As a last request will someone please post spoilers for the rest of the issues (starting with #9) so that I can see what I am (or am not) missing?

I don't get how they're just killing the females so easily. They haven't been shown to be "superhuman" or anything. I mean, sure, the 1st attack was unexpected, but after that, the regular people should be ready, if not out looking for them, hunting them down. Seems like the only smart ones in the story are the redneck father & son.

Except the jackass son keeps messing up (ie. cutting his father's fingers off, ramming the truck into the tree) and I think the twist is coming next issue when the Redneck Dad's wife got out of her grave. Interesting to see where #10 takes us.

I've read issues 8-11...its like Night of the Living Dead, only with identical, naked, mute women instead of zombies! There's even someone named Barbara. :D Oh, and instead of eating you, they'll give you a beat down! Like the GTA of comics or something.

This book had three slow issues that built up suspense and the latest issue was nothing but action. psychotic naked girl action. This is my favorite comic right now. Between this and "Y: The Last Man" my thoughts about gender roles are seriously being tested.
I can understand the story moving too slowly for some but for me it's perfect. The pacing really gives a sense of reality to the story and you feel like it's all happening in real time. I can definitely envision myself being involved in the story that is unfolding in this comic.
Girls is a fantastic book and I wish this thread were a little more lively.

Girls 12 out today!!! Spoilers!!
So, we basically follow up 11 with an "aftermath" issue of when the "Girls" attacked the house.
Patti, a girl that looks like the "Girls" is dead, because the older black woman mistook her for them. Three "Girls" are also dead. BUT...
They do lock three woudned girls, much to the dismay of the women. There's a great dialogue between Nancy and the men as to why they should just kill the outright. Basically because the men can't be trusted because of their horniness.....
Wes group searches for the missing, when they come upon the Sperm in the Field. The tail end is then shown sucking in one of the dead women into its center and some of the "Girls" are feeding on the other dead women...
Ok, that was one of the weirdest paragraphs I've ever written....
So, I'm always up and down with this series, because sometimes I feel like things move too slow and other times it seems like an issue goes by to fast because its just action...but I'm always there for every new issue and as a whole, I'm really liking this series. This is pretty different from what you normally expect so if any of you are thinking about picking anything up from Image I recommend Girls.
The up and coming Luna brothers are a good thing for comics. This issue has got me back into ther series, and though I know that this series will undoibtedly read better in the trade format, I most certaintly will still be there each time the next issue comes out....

The conversation between Nancy and the guys that want to leave and find the other group was GREAT writing. This is what I like about the Luna brothers, they can make people seem human and talk like real people (shocking) This issues just renewed my love for the book, the last 2 issues were just two quick of reads IMO. They didn't include great dialogue...
Looking back I wish the Luna brothers would have made Ultra a ongoing book, there was just so much potential and stories that could have come out of that mini series (if you havn't read it buy the trade!), but Girls is still worth every penny.
I'm starting to think that these "Girls" are not aliens, I think the original "girl" was a government experiment that got loose? But that won't explain the giant sperm....I just hope they are not just "some" aliens, that would be a cop out. Any thoughts on who the Girls are??
One thing I don't like about the series is the covers, how many different poses of these women do we need?? Get some more of the townies on the cover!!! Veryy minor complaint....
Easily the best read of the week, why do I see so many copies at my LCS and see sh*t like Aquaman and Green Lantern sold out??? errr

Issue 12 was incredible indeed. Great dialogue between Nancy (she's a pain!) and the men.
The final scene was so creepy!! And was Molly alive when she was thrown into sperm-thing?? I mean, she was playing dead a little before, right?
I love how this book reads like it's all happening in real time. I know the pacing is slow, but in the other hand, we're dragged into the story like we are there with those people.
Now that I'm getting used to the cast and memorizing the names, I'm rooting for Taylor, Keena and Alexis(the blonde sisters), Alice(redhead girl with skirt and Nancy's daughter) and pregnant lady to survive. I'm really worried about pregnant lady(Ruby??). She and her husband seem to be two of the nicest people. The Luna brothers created such real characters that I can't help getting scared for them.
Keep on rocking, guys!

I really wish the Luna bros. would post a chart with pictures of the characters on thier site or something. It's just that all the names are so ordinary and there are so many characters.
This is still my favorite book and it is what got me back in to comics. Issue 12 was great but it was my least favorite issue.

I just read the whole series to date the last few days.
At the end of the first issue, I was sure I knew what was going on, and though I'm not quite as sure any longer, I haven't seen anything to completely refute my theory.
The story starts with sperm, and the last page is a sperm approaching an egg.
Right at the end of the big misogynistic rant Ethan makes is when the explosion occurs, and when we can assume the invisible wall, giant sperm, and alpha girl appeared.
My guess at the time was that Ethan somehow manifested his subconscious feelings about women at that moment, that it was something like the monsters made by the alien technology in Forbidden Planet from the minds of the crew.
The girl in a way is bits and pieces of every one of the complaints he had about the individual women put together with his fantasy woman from the magazine. She's beautiful, naked, available and willing, submissive to men, doesn't talk much, and hostile to other women.
I haven't seen it contradicted yet, but it's probably just speculation so far.
In the larger picture, we have the sperm thing in the cornfield, and the invisible wall, which is a sphere. The symbolism seems obvious to me. Sperm, egg (the invisible sphere), cells multiplying (the girls).
That doesn't really explain it, though. Is it the manifestation of the id, like I thought it was at first? The two other theories I've seen are that it's a form of alien invasion, and that it's a government experiment, possibly gone awry.
It has also been a good way to set up hostility between the men and the women, forcing them into traditional gender roles. The women have to stay behind and be protected by the men. They don't want the men going out because they're afraid the men will have sex when not around them and have children with other women. The girls exert an influence of some sort that makes them all but irresistable, a nice metaphor for the typical male excuse for infidelity.
The metaphors and symbolism are so richly layered on each other that each time you think you've seen them all, another pops up. It's nicely layerd writing, as with Y: The Last Man and Fables.
My only fear at this point is that when it comes to an end it won't live up to the setup.
By the way, in the letters collumn for #13, one of the Lunas said it looks like the end will be at about the end of the second year, which should give them time to wrap up the plot threads and explain what's going on.
One last thing. Am I the only one who is rooting for Nancy to get beaten to death and eaten by the giant sperm? Or at least slapped a good one. Good god woman, given it a rest. I also think I'm a lot more sympathetic to Mrs. Mcallister than most of the townspeople. I'm not sure, but I think I'm getting a little bit of a racist vibe from how they react to her. I think she's got good reason to be upset. People invade her house, eat all her food, ignore basic courtesies. I'd be pissed, too.
Ok, I guess that was two last things.
Heh. A survival horror story with beautiful naked girls as the monsters. This is a high concept book.

Girls #17:
Ok, so the old guy made a whole bunch of eggs. Not exactly surprising given how his wife treats him that he'd find relief with the girls.
The bear attack was fun. Silly, unless those girls are a lot stronger than human women, but I found myself grinning the whole time at the strangeness of it.
And we learn something new at the collapsed bridge. Apparently the girls can communicate with each other telepathically, or at least there seems to be some sort of link between then that told them that there were bodies on the falled section of bridge to collect.
This is easily one of my half dozen favorite current comics.

After Spider Woman: Origin and especially after randomly picking up Ultra recently, I knew I had to give Girls a try.
I picked up the first trade today and loved it. I can already see it in my head, cinematically. Loved the banality of the small town and it's folk contrasted with the extreme WTF happenings. I was suckered in immediately and I'll be picking up the next couple of trades as soon as I can.

First post here. Just finished plowing through issue #21 of Girls and am loving every twisted minute of it, especially the mounting tension between the male and female factions and the mens' inability to keep it in their pants. This is one of the books that I've enjoyed most after jumping back into comics with both feet following a decade plus break (with the execption of the rare graphic novel). As a kid in the early-mid '80s it was mostly cape and tights stuff for me (especially Uncanny X-men and New Mutants). Girls, along with Fables, is the thing I've enjoyed the most from the stack of stuff I picked up at my local store.
Probably not the right place for this, but Phonogram, despite my avid interest in alternative music and its über-cool veneer (or maybe because of it), is far and away my least favorite. If anyone would care to enlighten me on what the hell is supposed to be happening in Phonogram #4 I would greatly appreciate it.

I love the ending to 21.
Truly the most satisfying part of this issue. I just hope 22 follows up properly and we see something similar to that of the last Walking Dead issue.

#21: Probably one of the best issues in the entire series.
SPOILERS
At last, we are starting to get some answers. It's starting to look like Ethan really might be responsible for this entire nightmare - that his subconscious mind created the Girls.
Nancy may be a bitch, but Kenny is pure evil. That was an awesome last page. I can't wait for next issue.

Just wanted to join the Girls fanbase online. I love this comic. This, along with Invincible and The Walking Dead, are my three favourite Image comics. However, I'm reading all three only in trades, so I'm not caught up until the most recent trade comes out.

Is this a work of genius or what?!
The whole series has been great, but its all building up to fantastic climax. Just read #22 and its brilliant again. Nancy versus Kenny. The guys all going postal. The basement. The Primary's seduction of Ethan. Everything is great.
Do the Girls have gaydar? Too effing right they do. That last page is brilliant! Again!

You know, I was reading it and was kind of worried that they weren't wrapping things up fast enough. But, damn...who cares that ending was amazing.
