This thread is for Japanese Pro Wrestling AKA Puroresu AKA Puro. I wish to do three things with this thread...
1.Educate The Pro Wrestling Fan: I want to show the pro wrestling fans on the board that there are more to choose from then they think. To show that wrestlng isn't tall hosses with chemical physiques & toothpick beauties with interchanging funbags all acting as stuntfolk. Also to show that some indie promotions have adopted the Puro ethic.
2.Educate the MMA fan: I want to show MMA fans that MMA has ties in Puro thanks to Rikidozan & later Tony Inoki & Nobuhiko Takada. I also want to let MMA fans know that it's alright to embrace this part of their history.
3.Educate The Casual Fan.: I want to show casual fans the pure athleticism of Puro & to further dispel & break down walls to show that Pro wrestling is a true sport as well as a form of entertainment.

Rikidozan was born Kim Sin-Nak on in North Korea. Because of the long history of discrimination by the Japanese against Koreans, Sin-Nak used the name Mitsuhiro Momota and claimed he hailed from Nagasaki. While growing up, he encountered that prejudice against Koreans often, and was known to have been quite bitter because of it. He kept his true identity a secret for his entire career, and his true nationality was not revealed until years after his death.
After training as a sumo, the man who would go on to rule Japanese pro wrestling began his career 1951 in Tokyo, wrestling to a 10 minute draw against Bobby Bruns. Soon, the athletic and talented Rikidozan would (nearly) single-handedly establish puroresu as a sport for the masses...
After they lost World War II, the Japanese people were understandably in a state of depression, and looking for heroes that could help ease the pain of their everyday lives. The sport of wrestling was, literally, brand new to the Japanese public, and Rikidozan became the biggest wrestling superstar in the country.
By beating American wrestler after American wrestler (who were portrayed as evil villians), Rikidozan helped win back some respect for Japan in the eyes of the Japanese people. In the process, he became a national hero. Rikidozan often expressed his contempt for American wrestlers, whom he saw as overweight cheaters, and he often claimed that they were "soft" compared with their Japanese counterparts. It might not have made him popular with American fans, but the Japanese loved him for standing up to the Americans. But in actuality, it was an American who truly put him over the top as Japan's #1 wrestler
When World Heavyweight Champion Lou Thesz lost the International Heavyweight title (which had been awarded to him by the N.W.A.) to Rikidozan on August 27, 1958 it validated Rikidozan in the eyes of the wrestling world. Lou Thesz, the most revered wrestler in the world at the time was virtually the only American wrestler Rikidozan would admit to having respect for. The respect was mutual...and when Thesz "put him over" again by losing to Rikidozan in the final round of the 4th Annual World League Tournament on May 25, 1962, he knew he would be building Rikidozan's reputation at the expense of his own. It was a jesture Rikidozan would never forget, and a lesson he would pass on to his students when training them for a career inside of the ring. Including Giant Baba & Tony Inoki.
Aside from being Japan's top pro wrestler, Rikidozan was also a successful businessman...and by the end of his life had acquired a vast empire which included his wrestling and boxing promotions, as well as hotels, golf courses, night clubs, and real estate holdings. However, those business interests would eventually bring him into contact with the violent "underworld" of Yakuza.
On December 8, 1963 he had an argument with one of the Yakuza in the restroom of a fashionable Tokyo hotspot, and after having a dispute over mutual "territory", Rikidozan was stabbed in the belly. He was rushed to the hospital, and the doctors told him that the wound was not life-threatening, and that he would heal properly with some time off. But just one week later, he died of peritonitis after bleeding profusely. He was only 39.
Thousands of mourners attended his funeral on December 20, 1963. The loss of Rikidozan was so shattering that the sport he loved so much nearly died along with him. Puroresu went into a tailspin after his death, and it took 2 of his students, Baba the Giant and Antonio Inoki to keep Rikidozan's legacy alive.
Thanks to Rikidozan, wrestling was established in Japan. The sport, which is now viewed by tens of millions of Japanese every year, quite literally, would probably not exist today in Japan had it not been for his tireless efforts.

Actually Hogan only won the IWGP league which could be called a 80s version of the G1 Climax. The IWGP title as it today wasn’t created until 1987. Inoki won a tournament beating Masa Saito to become the first IWGP champion.

All over the world wrestling is "fake" in the sense that the outcomes, usually, are set before the match and wrestlers, usually, don't try to really fight one another to see who the victor is. There a still a serious athletic and competitive component to it, that you may see more of in Japan than with some wrestlers in the states...although many wrestlers and promotions in the states do adopt the style.

As in predetermined results, yes. They're more "let's go out there & wrestle!!" & give 110% then our guys. Matches are longer. We give about 10-12 minutes a match on free tv, where as in puro it's 20-25 minutes. Little to no rest holds unless needed. There's some matches that go "Strong Style" meaning they mutually shootfight each other. They have storylines, but they're usually played out in the wrestling magazines & press confrences.
In short, they're sports entertainment with more emphasis on the "sports" part.

There's nothing wrong with outcomes, but you have to put a lot of effort to make the match look exciting & keep the audiance captivated. Now, if the rumors were that Big Show would be facing guys like Masa Chono, Shinzuke Nakamura or even Keijii Mutoh, that be cool because they can carry a match & make it exciting. Akebono is a retired sumo who's a washout in MMA looking for a payday & just happens to be a drinking buddy of Inoki's. To put these two guys together as a headline is box office poison. Both are slow & Akebono doesn't have the gas tank to put on a 30 minute match, let alone a five minute one.Big Show doesn't know how to carry a match either. It'll be a totally boring match. Plus you have the egoism between Inoki & Vinny Mac on who's style of wrestling is better. So, this match won't possibly happen in the first place.

IMO, start your way in with the Best of Chris Benoit & Best of Dynamite Kid & then spread out to Keijii Mutoh, Tiger Mask, Jushin Liger, Misawa, "Dangerous K" Kawada, Kenta Kobashi, KENTA, CIMA, Shinzuki Nakamura (including his MMA bouts), Magnum Tokyo, Ultimo Dragon, etc., etc.

Hashimoto has a lot of work to do on himself before getting back into the ring. He still has a lot of debts to pay as well as a spending habit that started it.

Tiger Mask was a popular manga in the 70's written by Ikki Kajiwara who is also known as The Father of PRIDE. His comics were so popular, that I think New Japan (not sure which orginization) created the persona to cash in. Tiger Mask(Satoryu Sayama) first appeared in 1981 in the W.W.W.F. and faced The Dynamite Kid. Tiger Mask carried on the rivalry with Dynamite & went on to be the first wrestler to hold a WWF & NWA title at the same time. After an injury in 1983, Sayama retired & gave the mask to Misawa. Sayama went on to become a great innovator in the wrestling buisness. He not only was one of the founding fathers of the Cruiserweight division, he wrote an interesting & conroversial book about North American pro wrestling, recording the beginning of steroid use & buddy booking. He later on becomes a force in MMA by helping Matt Hume form Pancrase, Inoki form PRIDE & join PRIDE with Matt as judging officials.
Misawa carried on the Tiger Mask name till 1990 in All Japan & later formed NOAH.
the third Tiger Mask (Kanemaru?) carried the mask till '95-'96

Good luck with that.
In the beginning it was a true sport where competitors got in the ring & fought for a cash prize. Those who made it a career formed a martial art out of it called Catch as Catch Can or Catch for short. Many "Catchers" were very popular for their time. Two of them became presidents (Lincoln & Teddy Rooseavelt) who wanted to orginize the sport & even teach it to our military. It wouldn't have been odd to see Babe Ruth break bread with say, Frank Gotch or Gorgous George because George & Gotch were accepted as athletes. While Rikidozan kept that element alive, wrestling in the states went more story based. More character based to the point that the inovation and the athleticism of the match is almost nonexsistant. Wrestlers are based on looks now rather on how they work. That needs to stop.
Do I see Vince as the heir to Abe, Teddy & Frank. Nope. I do not. Baba, Ohtani, Takada & even Inoki through his blundering have done a much better job than Vince.

Actually, Sayama didn't retire in 1983, he left NJPW to form the first UWF and later retired in 1985. As for the gimmick, the story I've heard is that Baba bought it and gave it to Misawa who was returning from an overseas learning excursion.
With the gimmick returned to NJPW, Koji Kanemoto took up the hood in 1992 and unmasked on 1/4/94 after losing to Liger.

I haven't seen Kendo in a match, but I do know that He faced Ohtani & beat him before becoming Kashin. He was a IWGP Jr. tag champ with luche Dr. Wagner when he started in New Japan. He was also a two time IWGP Jr. champ, even though the opponents he had for them were lackluster. His last title win was from Naruse in 26 secs. Inoki puts him in MMA matches with Ryan "doughboy" gracie, got tired of getting beat up & switched to All Japan. He wins the AJ Jr. belt which was vacated in '03, had another lackluster match & then was stripped for some reason in '04. He's now in NJ again tagging with Fujita.
I'm told he has a wicked Jujigatame.

when i saw kendo he was going by just dragon soldier, was the tourney good??
People have said the whole show was good aside from the Kendo going over all the ROH guys. Spanky and Dragon had a MOTYC, and Homicide vs Aries was a great main event.

You're correct. Kohei is good. He's got two wins in MMA. Was really held down when Hashimoto was running Zero-One. Hopefully, Ohtani has something for him in the new Zero-One.
Yokoi didn't do a lot of wrestling. He was with RINGS as an MMA fighter. When he got signed with Pride, he started working out with the Zero-One folk & eventually found himself on the Hustle shows after losing to NOG.

thats a shame, he was good in zero one match in 02, unless ohtani just carried him, but it certainly didn't seem that way. i'm gonna watch the bjpw top of the super jr. tourney today, i'm looking forward to seeing tigermask 4 in a match for the 1st time, is #4 worthy of the mask??

Follow up to the Bay City screwjob...
A jurno friend of mine was talking to me about this. He told me when he was covering the event for a "blurb" in the paper, that there is cause to believe that Omori was set up from the start. He said when he was at the autograph session for interviews, the head of the indy was introducing Dr. Feelgood (He'll always be Moob Master to me) to Gagne & the bunch while Omori was signing autographs. He was hearing a lot of "Wait till tomorrow night."

He's got an oldschool style like Corino. They both studied under Dory so it's understandable. Omori has a bit of a more realistic edge. I think that thanks in part of being the former tag partner of Yoshihiro Takayama.

Shin'ya Hashimoto was reported dead today. He died of a brain anyerism. Everyone from DSE president Sakakibara to Yoshihiro Takayama give their condolaces.
He defined New Japan in the 1990s in the way that Inoki did in the 70s and Choshu did in the 80s. He was not just an "ace," but he had the supreme aura of a true champion the likes of which was rarely matched in professional wrestling on either side of the Pacific. When I think of Shinya Hashimoto's career, that is really what first comes to mind: Champion. He headlined more successful Tokyo Dome shows (and in turn more huge shows overall) than any other wrestler in the world.
When he and the other Musketeers first started getting their big push in 1989, Hashimoto looked like the odd man out. He certainly didn't have the charisma and fire of young Mutoh or the workmanlike technical skills of young Chono but got pushed the hardest of the three, leading some to question Choshu's sanity. He was getting better and better in the early 90s, and by the time 1993 rolled around he won his first IWGP title from Great Muta.
His first reign was good, but when he won the title back from Tatsumi Fujinami only a month after he lost it in 1994, he began the run that truly cemented his legacy. 9 defenses over a year's time in which Hashimoto define what it was to be a champion. Hashimoto wasn't just a great champion because of statistics, but from the intensity, passion, and knowledge he brought to those matches. The reign featured two extremely good matches against Kensuke Sasaki, who was not much regarded as a good worker in those days. When it came time for a New Japan wrestler to win back the IWGP title from the invading Nobuhiko Takada in the second Tokyo Dome show of 1996 it was no small coincidence that Hashimoto was chosen as the flagbearer of New Japan. His third and final IWGP title reign lasted over a year and had 7 defenses that were on a whole even stronger than his last reign.
With all the respect I can muster for modern "super-reigns" like those of Nagata, Kawada, and Kobashi, none of them had the impact of Hashimoto's. New Japan Pro Wrestling is Strong Style, and Hashimoto embodied that philosophy in the 1990s, making him more than just a great champion... He was New Japan Pro Wrestling. He was all that was great and noble and powerful and passionate in wrestling. He was not selfish, but knew when and how to give his opponents the opportunities they needed to put on matches that drew the crowds in, both physically in terms of attendance and psychologically in terms of capturing their hearts.
Farewell Hashimoto-sama.

Hashimoto's death was quite the shock to wake up to this morning. I was really looking forward to his rumored return to NJPW in the near future. I guess there isn't much else to say other than the guy was a true legend and will be missed greatly. Now it's time to pop some classic Hash into the VCR and remember how great he truly was.

royal, can you xplain how this tourney works, is it double elimination and how is it scored?? also is ryan sakoda the guy from upw that debuted in wwe along side akio??
Sorry I missed this. I'm not sure of the scoring, but it's a round robin event where everybody faces everybody in their respective blocks in one on one action. The winners of the blocks with the most points face off against each other.
And yes. It's that Sakoda.

cool, i thought he was pretty good in the velocity matches he was in, but his move set seemed to be ripped off from masato tanaka, and tanaka is in this tourney too, so i wonder how their match will play out

Yasuda was a IWGP champ in NJ in 2003. Very Strong Stylish. From what I heard, he had to quit NJ because Inoki kept on putting him in those damned Bom Ba Ye cards. His KO loss to Rene in 2004 put him in the hospital with a concussion. He just let his contract expire while he healed up. Here he is now.

Hey all!!
We don't have the full details as of yet, but there is a scandal brewing around the G-1 tournament. The short of it is this. MMA fighter & Gaijin wrestler Josh Barnett who was replacing Akira Shoji in the tounament is now being replaced by Kawada. No big deal right? Well, New Japan has stated that Josh is out due to injury. One problem though. Josh is pretty much healthy. Yeah. And to top it off, he found out that he was out of the G-1....from us.
From the layman's point of view, it's like taking Samoa Joe out of the X Cup & replacing him with say...Larry Zibisco & Joe not knowing about until he's talking to Belfi & Buck on PWI Radio.
Check out the updates on the PPH if you're interested.

eeehh. Fujita is like any of your basic power wrestlers. I wouldn't be surprised if he showed up on TNA against Monty Brown or Rhino for a feud.
If we go by your definition, Josh & even Yokoi & Fujita wouldn't make the list. It would go like this. You'd have the Shamrocks in the first two positions followed by Tamura & then Sakuraba & finally Don Frye.

I think the NJ/0-1 confontation was mostly done for Hashimoto. The big thing New Japan is concintrating on is this rumored 3-way dogmatch between Chono, Fujita & possibly Brock.
