View Full Version : Has Venom ever eaten anyone's brains?

Or was it all just tough talk?
When he was first around, it was pretty much all he said, but did he ever actually go through with it & munch on anyone's noodle?
I doubt it, but can anyone produce any evidence to the contrary?

There was a miniseries entitled "Venom: The Hunger", wherein Venom came down with some sort of symbiotic disease that did, in fact, have him eating brains (which he wasn't any happier about than the victims). However, it turned out that all he really needed was a little chocolate lovin'. ;)

I love this thread's title. :)
In the first arc of the new Spectacular series, Paul Jenkins had a story about the symbiote draining his victims of adrenaline. Venom seems to enjoy bodily fluids. Which is probably why he'll never get his own show on the Food Network.

The Hunger, despite the crap sounding premise, was actually one of the better Venom mini-series, possibly because it didn't revolve around him being a pseudo-hero, it was just a "crap things that could happen to Venom" story. The art was also rather nice, though I can't remember who it was. If you see it dirt cheap, pick it up.

You are thinking of Humberto Ramos.

i remember the talking toy that had him threatening to eat Spidey's brains. He didn't say "I Will eat your brains", or "I'm Going to eat your brains", he said "I want to eat your brains!".. which sounded to me like he was asking permission.

No, not the Spectacular Spidey arc, 'twas a Venom miniseries, although you are right in that they are annoyingly both called The Hunger. I have now gone and found that the miniseries was written by Len Kaminski and drawn by Ted Halsted. Like I said, comes highly recommended.

It was mostly bluff untill the mid-90's Venom series went down hill and stopped making any sort of sense.
The early stuff of that was actually pretty good. I especially liked his team-up with Mobius and him getting his ass pounded by Juggernaut.

i had this. i also had the wolverine that said "ive got claws, and i can use them". those silver boxes on their backs, really representative of their comic counterparts.
that being said, the only things/people i can remember venom eating offhand was parts of sandman and carnage in pp:sm.

1990: The symbiote eats nothing.
1996: The symbiote begins eating brains. Luckily, the same stuff inside brains is found inside chocolate. (???)
2000: The symbiote begins eating people made out of sand.
2003: The symbiote begins feeding on adrenaline.
2005: The symbiote (its son, anyway) becomes a "psychic vampire".
I swear, the only thing more inconsistent about Venom than what he eats is how many children he can have.
Or how strong he is compared to Spider-Man.
Or Brock's motivations for doing what he does.
Or what the symbiote is vulnerable to.
Or whether or not the symbiote itself is evil.
Or whether or not the symbiote itself can talk.
Or how many times Brock can "permanently bond" with the symbiote and then lose it again.
Or...
...
God, Venom sucks.

Oh don't be silly. Venom or Carnage haven't really made an appearance since Maximum Carnage. Everything else was just made up.

Ah, wouldn't that be great? :)
Of course, to be perfect, we'd have to drop Maximum Carnage too and say that Carnage has never appeared since his initial three-parter. Then we're really talkin'. :D

Man youre rite, to a point. Venom is a really cool character, but has been totally screwed by all the different takes on him by different creative teams over the years. What Venom has become sucks.

exactly. I love Venom but some of the stories by different writers have me scratching my head. he is an awesome villian.
in the mid 90's Venom was popular so they pushed too many stories and changes to keep him interesting. also the whole anti-hero thing completely backfired.

I'm researching this issue for Venom's Wikipedia page. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venom_%28comics%29)
One version of the page had that he needed brains or choclate, another version said brains, chocolate or potato chips. All were later removed.
Is there any sources for this either way?
Is this 616 or Ultimate?

This is a little-known and thoroughly stupid retcon to 616 Venom that was added during his "series of mini series'" phase. The Hunger, to be exact.
The symbiote, for no discernible reason, suddenly started thirsting for a particular chemical found in human brains. Eddie, being the super nice guy that he is, is disgusted, and forces the symbiote away. Blah blah blah, three issues of garbage transpire, and then Eddie and the symbiote permanently bonded once and for all (for the third or fourth time, at this point).
Luckily, it turned out that the same chemical that the symbiote was finding in human brains could also be found in chocolate, so Eddie made sure to keep himself well-stocked with candy bars. Now I know nothing about science, and this fact could be 100% true, but it doesn't change the fact that it's also mind-blowingly stupid.

It might've received a mention here or there in subsequent minis, but I honestly don't recall. When the minis ended and Venom became a recurring Spidey villain again, the brains thing was forgotten. By the time Paul Jenkins wrote the first arc in Spectacular, the symbiote had moved on to eating cancerous tumors, or something like that (seriously).

Venom eats brains in "Spidey" (cartoon oneshot). My av is the proof.
And no Venom doesnt suck.. at least he didnt untill writers decided to abuse the character in every way of the "how to abuse people i hate" handbook.
But well. he's dead now. At least brock is. He went out with a squirt and not with a bang and well, im just glad the pain's over now.

Another random Symbiote biology question- Have the comics ever shown how a symbiote would respond to being in water? Would it stay stable or would some of it's mass wash away from the host?

Oh, Venom's been underwater plenty of times. More than once he's dived into a nearby water source to protect himself from an opponent using flames.
I've never thought of the symbiote sticking to Eddie like oil or something, anyway. We know it can make itself solid or malleable, and we know it felt just like cloth to Peter for years, so I imagine it would feel like solid material to Eddie, as well.

I seem to recall him eating an entire monster in one of the novels...The Venom Factor, I think? Or maybe I'm just making crap up again. It's been forever since I opened one of my Spider-Man novels...
I liked the 'Choose your own Adventure' one I had. Much fun.
