Its rare a real life court case could have a real Law and Order twist. But the case of Tracey Roberts seems to have all the elements of one. Here is the rundown from Dateline NBC...

10 years ago Tracey Roberts claimed she killed Dustin Wehde in self defense after the teenager attacked her in the house. The case seemed open and shut. Wehde was a troubled boy who had emotional outbursts. His mother claimed he did have issues but was never violent. The police basically interviewed her and the son who was 11 at the time and he backed up her statements. Claiming she was attacked and she shot the boy in self defense. That he tried choking her with pantyhose.
Tracey claimed there was a 2nd intruder and he ran off. She described him and the police set to work trying to figure out who it could be. Roberts 2nd husband was out of town on a business trip and came home quick to be with her once he was told. They both claimed that a dentist who Roberts was taking to court in a malpractice suit may have been responsible. Or...her 1st husband who now lived in Virginia.
This ex as Tracey claimed was an evil , horrible man. He abused her , played horrible mind games with her and abused their son. That they were battling in court for years over the son and getting visitation rights. She pretty much told the police he did it and they looked into it. As time passed however ...the police cleared the 1st husband who was in Virginia and not able to get to Iowa at the time this case happened. He also had no link to the teenager who did this.
The case basically went cold then . No more was found out. The teenagers mom fought hard to get the police to look more into it. Claiming her son was shot 8 times all over his body and it couldn't have been self defense. They kept telling her how it was pretty much open and shut as usual. Finally a new prosecutor came in and decided to look into the case and was stunned . The previous one had over looked the key statements of how Tracey fired her gun...
"I'm supposed to believe a woman suddenly ...that quick became as good as a Navy Seal firing at someone on her knees , falling backwards , over her shoulder ? She had shot him 7 times ...he was dying and no way he could stand. Her final shot is point blank to his head ! "- Prosecutor.
During this time Tracey left her 2nd husband. He too suddenly became evil and her son backed up her statements. Claiming he had abused her and him as well. The 2 divorced 2-3 years after the case . Of course the son and Tracey then started to believe he may have hired Dustin to kill her. The police checked into him during the 1st investigation and cleared him. Finding out that he really was outta town on a business trip and had no real reason to kill his wife. Of course the abuse claims lingered and you would think perhaps he did have a reason.
The prosecutor decided to go back to the start of everything and caught up with the 1st husband who matter of fact stated she was crazy and had pulled a gun , telling him she was gonna take him outta this world ! She fired a shot and missed and also cheated on him with numerous men during that time. He finally left filing for divorce as she started the abuse allegations on his son. He claims a court cleared him of that and more of her allegations .
This made the prosecutor realize Tracey Roberts clearly had issues and a motive perhaps. He questioned the now divorced 2nd husband who too also claims Tracey had moments of wild anger. In one statement , her and her son claim he took her head and slammed it through the drywall. But the 2nd husband claimed it was an obvious lie and that she had taken her fists and foot and punched holes in the dry wall in anger. He also claimed the step son was lying about the abuse claimed and he never touched him either.
But what sealed the deal for the Tracey Roberts case was where she had gave statements and the police wrote them down word for word. The prosecutor went through what evidence was in a box and discussed the following things...
1.) Dustin parked right in the open that evening. Where everyone could see him in the driveway clearly.
2,) Roberts claimed Dustin took computers to steal. As his mom claimed , Dustin knew what good computers was and knew the ones placed nice in his car trunk...was crap. That he had left the good stuff.
3.) The prosecutor claimed that it didn't fit at all.... the young teenager carried out these computers . Stopped...and came back to choke out and kill this woman he knew ? And she waited on that to happen ?
4.) Inside they found a journal of his where he wrote about the 1st husband possibly hiring him to kill Tracey Roberts. The prosecutor claimed that words and phrases matched what Roberts gave in her police statement. A former friend of Roberts claimed that she told her of his journals ...which made the prosecutor's day. Because ...they just found them. And how would she know...what was written there ?
They had her arrested and after a trial ...found guilty. Her son (the case is 10 years old) is now a young man and he tried defending his mom. But as they used his various statements he made ...it was clear he was lying badly. The prosecutor claimed he may seek perjury charges against him and as he stated..."He was her key witness in whatever she did with these men and he became her alibi. So sad..."
What really made this great was watching Dennis Murphy interview Roberts and basically destroy her. I mean its rare you see someone crumble so quick and have no defense. But basically like a prosecutor Murphy went through and picked apart Roberts whole self defense shooting . Asking how she could possible aim and fire the gun so well , with her hands tied in pantyhose. Roberts stammered and her face showed ...she was fucked.
And that dentist from Chicago she had a malpractice suit against...she had a letter printed out offering to settle a sexual abuse claim for $150,000 with her if she didn't show her 2nd husband. He found this...weird but was pissed at the dentist at the time. The dentist claimed she had made the entire thing up as a blackmail scheme and he never sent that letter.
